How Important Is Water?; To tank or not to tank?

Water is a big issue in SE QLD. Once upon a time it rained a lot in all the right catchment places. Today it rains, but not enough and unfortunately not in all the right places.

We had a 10,000 gallon concrete tank installed to hold the rain water that flows off our roof. If you did this sort of thing in the UK you'd be classified buy the neighbours as insane, especially if you offered them a fresh glass of the stuff. But you might need to do it here.

Bird droppings, leaf debris, dead flies, ants and spiders (I suppose some might be living...) get caught in the flow and...

So you have a filter installed to kill all the nasty germs.

How do you feel about this sort of water conservation and use? It's something new that WILL confront you when you come over to settle.

I remember when Gill and I toured Mount Tambourine in the Gold Coast hinterland. Our accommodation comprised a self-contained cottage in the rainforest. All very nice. The water supply was directly off the roof and this being a cute little abode amongst the flora and fauna, all manner of creation got swept into the tank.

The water was considered safe to drink, albeit a light yellow-brown. You could notice the dis-colouration just barely in a glass. Running a bath was a different matter... Thoughts of being more unclean than clean sprang to mind.

BUT, the water that flows from the drinking tap in our own home is crystal clear and the rest (shower, bath, clothes and plate washing, loo flushing, teeth cleaning, etc.) looks clear enough too, although it does taste slightly different to the filtered stuff.

Any thoughts? It'll be interesting to re-visit this one once you're settled to see if / how your opinions differ.

Paul.

If it was a funny colour, but I was reassured that it was 'safe' to drink, then I would drink it no worries. With regards to saving water, that doesnt bother us at all - but as long as its properly filtered after.

Its all worth it. x

Not sure I would drink it! I'm bad enough drinking tap water from UK taps - I think it has a funny smell although I'm yet to find someone who agrees with me!

Wouldn't mind using it for all other tasks but may have to pass on drinking it!

We have a water filter tap on our kitchen sink tap.

We drink gallons of water. If i could be bothered, I'd swap it, and bring it to Oz. with us. But the new buyer for the house picked up opn it straight away..........
