Hi everybody! I haven't been on here for a while, but some of you may remember me, or have indeed been corresponding with us. Well, we have booked our flight for the 31st July (3 days after i'm best man at my bros' wedding!) so will ba difficult time. We have got the removals booked for the 31st May, should complete, fingers crossed early-mid June on our house and have set up a FREE google e-mail address ready, etc...so things are starting to fall into place, except for... * The exchange rate:- We are concerned about this, as it was as high as $2.54 in early Feb, but it has since dived to around $2.39, so a massive difference, especially if intending to exchange a large amount....however with the imminent almost certain interest rate increase here in the UK, along with the uncertainty re the election in Aus, hopefully we will see it improve again, although not as high as $2.54, I bet...Hindsight!! * Where are we goingt o stay when we arrive? Well, we were hoping we would be staying with my rels in the Glasshouse Mountains initially, but they aren't being as "forthcoming" as we had hoped, so if we do stay with them initially, it looks like we will have to ask directly nearer the time...so a plan "B" is needed, just in case... Rentals seem to be at a premium, we have even heard of tennants getting involved in auction like situations to secure one, great for the landlord! Also, some employ a points system...www.homehunter.com.au seems to be about the best for rentals, so we were wondering has anybody else got any tips/in a simular situation/thought of an alternative (apart from what has already been mentioned/renting temp. holiday flats/a motel!)? Regards, Jamie. |

moneywise - we arent going to move our lump sum over until the exchange rate picks up and will only move say £10k over to start off as spending money. that will get us a place to live and a car and fingers crossed the exchange rate will have picked up a lot. we will move a little into hifx so that when the exchange rate starts to go back up we will have a trigger to move the lump sum over. we are looking at setting it at 2.5% to get the best deal, even if its next year, we will still have the interest off the UK bank account ticking over. as for the second question...i added some short term lets on your other thread..not what you wanted, but i cant think of anything else other than renting/motels or staying with family/friends. I am looking forward to seeing what other suggestions people come up too now. good to see you back on the forum Jamie. x |

Yes, we will probably do the same, assuming the rate doesn't pick up, but i'm optomistic it will, but I doubt very much it will be as high as $2.54 again, we are kicking ourselves we didn't do it in Feb, but we hadn't found a buyer for our house then and considered it too risky at the time to do a "Forward Contract"..hindsight!! I was also reading on expats yesterday and one post said that historically in the last few years $2.30 is ouch, $2.40 is ok-good and $2.50 is party time- reading that made me feel even worse! Apparantley Aus is booming and spending at the mo (sounds a bit like here!) and that some are even taking out funds from there Super to buy property...suppose it's the same as unlocking equity here, NOT good.. Thankyou for the links on the other thread, the one you have booked looks lovely, but we only really need a 1 bed/garage (just the 2 of us) but the other link to realestate.com (estate agents list) will be Very useful, thankyou, we will copy & paste e-mails to them all nearer the time..Ok, if think of anything else pl let us know, Jamie & Kerrie. |

You could always try www.check-in.com.au as a solution to short term accommodation. They do plenty of appartment type rents, and the prices are coming down, as it is getting closer to winter....... Airconkid

Just as an aside, although it is linked in a way, my main bread earner is from the job I have as a partner in a small UK business. I owned the business outright and put it into partnership prior to coming out to Australia so that I would have work as soon as I arrived. So I now work from home and such is the business that rarely do I have to return to the UK. The hours can be a little odd though... However, it is less than ideal because I'm paid in UK pounds. I'm paid from the profits the business earns and until the annual accounts are officially stamped my dosh resides in a UK bank and only then can I get my muts on it. That's the trouble with being self-employed! So EACH YEAR I have to go through what migrants usually go through just once. In effect, I get paid once a year. There are strange tax implications which both my UK and my Australian accountants smooth out for me after some head scratching. And then it's time to look at the exchange rate and assess the best time for transfer. Bloody ridiculous, but there you go. So no more whinging! And if you must, and you must, think of me or anyone else like me, who has to suffer the ups and downs of the currency exchange markets on an annual basis. It's complete madness! Keep smiling, it'll all be over and you'll never have to worry about it again, unlike yours truly who, at this very moment, has one eye on the exchange rate and the other on his dwindling Aus bank account.

I am not sure i could cope with being paid once a year. But would enjoy the paypacket when it come through. is there a particular time of the year when the exchange rate is better than others?? |

I don't know Cath when the best time of year is or even if there is one. It's not like I can hang on to find out! It's the strangest of feelings - I think I'm rich and then I divide the number by 52... |

Thats crossed my mind too - about if we decide to move back (worse case scenario). How it will impact on us will be amazing. |
