G'day everyone, We are Alan & Sylvi and we were granted our visa at the end of last year. We are coming out to the sunshine coast in July 2007 to live with our son Martin,19 & two daughters aged 12 & 8. Martin has been training as an auto engineer for that past 3 years since leaving school. He now needs a job in this sector and in the UK everything he applies for needs experience - so where is he to find it??? Since our visa was granted, apart from selling our house, we have been checking out the schools websites but are finding that they vary so much in quality of information that its difficult to make a short list of ones we should look at on or arrival. This is where we were hoping you might be able to help - can anyone recommend a school or schools that we should look at??? We would prefer that the girls were near each other to make life easier for taking and picking up. We would also like to hear from any of you on your removal expereiences - I would like to send out some of the girls toys, books, games etc before we leave the UK so that they are there when we arrive. Are there any suggsetions of economical ways of doing this?? We have friends in Brisbane that can look after the items but posting them is looking far too expensive. We still have to get firms round to quote for shipping our belongings, but I haven't quite finished on the de-cluttering yet - so any recommendations of firms would also be helpful. We would also like to hear from anyone who would just like to get in touch. Although we have friends in Brisbane they are busy parents and so getting together regularly might prove difficult so we would love to get to know either ex-pats or Aussies - just email us on sylviasharp@aol.com We look forward to any correspondence for you. Alan & Sylvi. |

G'day Alan & Sylvi With regard to schools we're halfway through compiling some very useful info about all the schools on the Sunshine Coast. It won't be long now before we add this to the main web site and the new newsletter should contain some info too. This should help you in your decision making process. I'll drop you a line when it's ready. With regard to removals, we used John Mason a couple of years ago who were just a few quid cheaper (about 50 pounds) than Anglo Pacific and Britannia. The result was a broken cup handle from an antique set (super glued back), a damaged (dented and squashed) metal tool box and slightly marked wooden freestanding wardrobes. Apparently that's not bad for a 10,000 mile door to door crossing. It wasn't worth us complaining. You'll possibly end up with worse from just moving house locally as less care is often made in the packing process. Anglo Pacific support our site and they have a self assessment form - you click the items you've got and they give you a quote. Click on the Anglo Pacific revolving logo on any of our main web pages to be taken through to their site and the self assessment online quotation process. At least it'll give you an idea! Paul. |

G'day Sylvi We have just booked for our removals - after six quotes finally went with a company called at Atlantic. The quotes varied by as much as 100% and I fine tooth combed them to sus out if there were any essential differences. We were shipping the contents of the whole house but the house buyer made an offer on them so added together with the cost of shipping - it made sense to leave them here. So all we are shipping is 20 teachest cartons at a cost of £500. G'day Paul I am struggling with the differences between the schools too so you info would be really helpful. I have looked at Beerwah - Maleny - Caloundra and Kawana Heights senior high schools but cant fathom much from the websites. How is your new house? Still energy efficient I hope? Di |

As energy efficient as we can afford to make it, Di! We're almost through summer and we've survived without any air-conditioning. We don't have any form of heating either other than a little mobile oil filled electric radiator. That said, being 400 metres above sea-level here does make a difference. It has been tough at times - about three weeks in the summer (day)and for about a month and a bit in the winter (night). We may just look into an air-con package over the winter when the costs come down. The reverse cycle systems also act as heaters and are fairly efficient. My next job is to put insulation on top of the ceilings. 2006 and into 2007 was our test period! We have the roof insulated to reduce the sun's heat energy but any heat in the house caught in winter (low sun through the windows) rises upwards and passes through the ceiling's plasterboard quite quickly. It's lovely and warm in the loft space! After a week of rain our 10,000 gallon water tank has been overflowing for a few days. That should see us through 'til the start of the next rainy season with the odd shower or two in between. Sorry for the delay in sorting out the school material. I've been over-worked these last two weeks and really haven't had much time to finish it. I'll drop you both (you and Sylvi) an email when it's ready. Paul. |

I've had a few users of the site contact me with regard to not being able to use the menu buttons and therefore cannot locate the school information. Getting to the forum or clicking on the contact button works fine but the rest do nothing. What's the solution? After an evening engrossed in HTML (oh joy) the problem appears to be the type of internet browser a computer is using. Updating to the latest version of Internet Explorer is the solution. On the Koala Konnection home page (long beach photo) you will see a message at the bottom with the link "Internet Explorer 7" in it. Click on the link and download the latest Microsoft browser. It'll open up a whole new world for you! Koala rocks!!! Paul.

HI Alan & Sylvi we have 4 kids, 2 daughters 12 & 9, and arrive June2007. We are doing the school research at the mo, its so hard to get a feel for a place till we get there tho. We just feel a bit bad about our 12 year old starting school (primary) only to have to move up to High school in January and find her feet in another new school! We're hoping she'll have made mates at Primary school that will ease the transition tho. Do you know where on the SC you are settling? We're in holiday apprtments in Caloundra for 2 weeks 25/6 - 9/7/06, and hope to find school, then rental in that time! Mel |

We are looking at Mountain Creek to settle the kids into, but as its the only one that came really recommended to us. Will be really interested in hearing others experiences with schools. My rellies have said to wait until we land and then consider schools as we may need to move near to work rather than settle the kids into school and then find work. x opinions are welcome folks. x |
