Hello everyone. Just checking in for my weekly topic scan and scribble.

Aside from the horrible happenings in Victoria that seem, rightly so, to be covered by all angles of the media, attention has to a large degree been diverted away from much of the credit crunch fiascos. It's good to see both sides of the political table unite for a change. Pity it's such awful circumstances that brings about that change.

Of note this morning was an email I received from Evolve Digital Publishing. At first I was a little sceptical because my email passwords appear to have been compromised (bastards!) but that, hopefully is now under control. Like I don't have enough to do, scum! Sorry...

Evolve Digital Publishing has taken over Australia and New Zealand magazine, once run by Merricks Media. Sometimes these magazine titles get sold on to different publishers when the going gets tough or a magazine appears to have run its length. Unfortunately, in this case, it's Merricks Media who have run their length.

My views about this magazine and how I wasted money supporting its existence by advertising my 'apples and pears' in it have previously been published - don't ask me where, coz I can't recall. In short, the response to my adverts netted me a relatively large loss. I don't blame the sales people, they have a job to do. Not true! I do blame the sales people, because they lied to me!

Publishing is a hard game. I've been there. Really, I have. I co-published a great little VW magazine once, lifted directly from my arms by a company yet to be invented and who shall remain nameless - OK, Jazz Publishing. The worst offenders are the distribution companies, each taking a large slice of your profit. Even the newagents want to dip their friendly hands into your coffers. In my experience WH Smith was the worst offender. We paid them money, directly or indirectly through our distributors (MMC) to place our magazines in a more prominent position. Well, I suppose that's business, but it's the other side of the coin I was looking at back then. Business can be faceless when you're looking beyond the pretty TV adverts.

I wish Evolve well. Their sales staff will face the same challenges. In a way it's a bad start for them because Merricks was preparing for the Down Under Live event, planned for the 21st March at Excel, which has now had to be postponed. The new dates for the show will see it partnering the "A Place In The Sun" exhibition at Earls Court from the 3rd to the 5th April so I supose it's not that bad after all, and the trade that were booked are getting a fair say, as I understand it.

Perhaps the writers all left one day! Emigrated! I ask you, how can you go to work 5 days a week and write about how wonderful countries like Australia and New Zealand are over the UK and then go back home feeling, well, really great? It's all about selling a dream. Or in a magazine's case, advertising with dreamy sales figures...

:happynod:

Hey, anyone going to the VW show DubFreeze next weekend?

Paul.
