Anyone for tennis?

Since coming to Aus I've got fitter and healthier. I rarely catch a cold and I cycle up hills that once upon a time I'd only take a car up. I never cycled in the UK as a means of keeping fit. A couple of weeks ago I managed a 3km climb that peaked at about a 17%+ incline. I felt my whole body shake as I covered the last few metres to the top. It really was a hell of a climb. I had little left in my legs to even push me up the gentle slopes and I got cramp about 5 mins after (not good). This was the second time I attempted it - the first ending in disaster 1.5km from the summit. It's steep! To give you an idea, on the first attempt I had to walk the last bit and as I neared the peak a diesel pickup went past me at about 20kph and slowing. It had a load on it, and that must have been heavy. It almost didn't make it - crashing first gear in the last few metres and dragging itself over the crest.

It's very hilly were I live so I do envy those cyclists who say they did "60k's today" - on the flat. I do almost 30ks up and down 10%+ hills. I dare anyone to try the Hunchy Road going up into Montville. Not only is it painfully steep, it's composed partially of loose gravel too and the bends just knock the wind out of you.

When I retire it'll be to a flatter spot. I'd hate to give up cycling. By then perhaps most roads will have cycle lanes or drivers will respect cyclists more than they currently do. We're soft and we wobble in a car's draft. I've nearly been hit twice by passing traffic who insist on overtaking and leaving just a couple of inches between their car and my handlebars and once someone threw a plastic cola bottle at me from a car and it hit me on the right shoulder. Yes, there are plenty of idiots on the road in Australia.

New Zealand had signs almost everywhere telling drivers of cars to leave a gap of 1.5 metres between their car and the cyclist. How good is that? Unfortunately, a lot of Aussie drivers couldn't give a sh*t and they're the one's that'll never, ever get on a bike.
