Many years ago we owned a 1200 VW Beetle (1192cc to be precise). It was a 1974 model. Top speed was something like 82mph but don't ask how long it took to get there. I think its 0 - 50mph was about 25 seconds! It was probably as slow as the first non-turbo diesels VW went on to produce. Their first diesel van (T25 or T3) liked to be driven at no more than 65 mph on a long journey and recouped no more than 35mpg. That little Beetle, with its deep gloss factory yellow paint and green interior took us everywhere. We even towed a trailer to Scotland and back. It was a brilliant car: AVU615M Eventually the engine let go on the M40. It had something like 175,000 miles on it. I replaced it with a re-furbished 1600 (1584cc). Horsepower jumped from 34 to a staggering 50 and the torque! I felt like Stirling Moss! For about 5 minutes. However, mpg dropped from a frugal 40 to the gallon to no more than 34. 40mpg was brilliant in 1974 from a basic petrol design. And on very hot and busy days I would see countless vehicles broken down on the hard shoulder of Britain's motorways with overheating problems. Steam pouring from under the bonnet usually. Of course, when your car doesn't need water... Maybe I should forget the LPG and just buy an old Beetle? |
