Hello Cath

I received an email yesterday from a friend down south (that's as in New South Wales!).

It sums up beautifully what I mean.

An old Indian Chief passed away and his son, who insisted on the modern ways and left the tribe as a young man to integrate into a modern western society, was urged back into the fold to act as new Chief. Seeing as this was a once in a lifetime opportunity he did so after more than a decade away.

Winter was approaching and, as was the custom, members of the tribe sought wisdom from the Chief. "Will it be a cold winter?" they asked.

Well, he didn't know, but seeing as winters normally were cold he told the gathering it would be a cold winter and that every one should go into the forests and stock up on fuel. Just to be on the safe side he phoned the local met office and asked, well, is it going to be a cold winter? "Oh yes!", came the reply. Good, his first decision was a good one.

Days later the tribesmen once again asked the newly appointed Chief. "Are you sure it's going to be a cold winter?" "I sure am" said the Chief. "Go fetch even more wood from the forest". And they did.

Well, a little doubt began to creep in so, once again, our Chief friend called the local met office. "Hey, are you sure it's going to be a cold winter?" he asked the met office. "Sure? We're absolutely sure it's going to be the coldest yet!" OK, now the Chief was completely satisfied. Then the tribesmen returned from the forest.

"How cold is it going to be Chief?" came the question. "The coldest ever!" replied the Chief. "Go fetch even more wood from the forest!" And they did; arm loads and arm loads of it.

Well, one more call to the met office just to satisfy himself that his orders were right. "You say it's going to be the coldest winter ever. How do you know this?" Came the reply: "Because the Indians are collecting more wood than we've ever seen them collect before!"

When someone mentions it, someone else mentions it, and then someone else and before you know it everyone agrees that it's the best because... well, no one looked at the facts, just everyone believed everyone else. Forums, eh? Dangerous places.

I happen to know that Matthew Flinders College gets great reviews from people who send their kids there. It is, in my opinion, the best there is. I know some of the parents. But you don't need me to go on to some of the big forums and tell everyone that there's a better school do you? I'd have to present the facts, and I'm sorry but my posting would either get pulled for advertising something on this site (sad but true) or I'd have to deal with the wrath of parents who feel that they should have known about this before hand. Well, you do now! However, Matthew Flinders is a private school, not a state school like Mountain Creek - a huge state school, btw. So be prepared to shell out a bit for the privalege.

Hey, I learned something else today. Almost twice as many migrants settle in Queensland as they do in Western Australia. Brisbane is the fastest growing city and the Gold Coast is growing faster than Brisbane!

Of those that state they want to live in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide, very few actually change their minds and they continue to live there. However, Perth has the greatest number of defectors (people deciding not to live in Perth after choosing Perth). I thought I'd drop that one in now because there are a lot of people coming to Australia who would like to know that fact. Some forums would make you believe otherwise. And I'll let you into a little secret, shall I? Sadly more Brits leave Perth after a few weeks than any other Brits living in any other Australian capital city, backed up by a certain foriegn exchange company who shall remain nameless. That's the beauty of regulated forums. When people are pointed in the direction of good quality web site material it's often perceived as advertising and removed with haste by a moderator. However, following the crowd that inevitably leads to stuffing up your own existence, well that's ok, isn't it? No, it's not.

As I've always said. This part of the world (Queensland) is a very nice place for anyone to settle. But that's only my humble opinon. And this is a forum, so believe that at your peril! :D
