Scott, can you tell us what the housing situation is like in Perth?

About six months ago or more the ABC's news and current affairs program, Lateline, couldn't let go of the resources sector and mining boom story and how the cost of housing in Perth and other regions of WA was escalating to dangerous levels. This was a concern not only for the local population but also the large migrant influx.

I'm aware, living close to Brisbane and keeping an eye on what others were saying on various forums, that the escalating cost of housing in Perth particularly, was forcing migrants to seek a more affordable solution - and there was a hint that Brisbane would be the next Perth - i.e. more migrants would decide to settle here than there. With the plunging pound things weren't (or maybe still aren't) getting any easier. But since the general election other news issues have become the main focus, at least in this part of the world - eastern side of Australia.

What's the 'situation on the ground' as it were? What are your own thoughts on how the price of property has affected people's choice and have prices levelled now or fallen perhaps, with the rise in interest rates? I think those that are considering Perth should be aware of the massive price hike that property has undertaken in this last year or two. Brisbane too has seen its rises and falls but it is still possible to get a nice 3/4 bedroom place close to the city, in the suburbs, for around the $375k - $425k mark. Prices here, where I live on the Sunshine Coast, about 50 miles north of Brisbane, are not as cheap as in the nice parts of Brisbane. I've been here for a little over 3 years now and seen considerable rises in property prices that make it hard for almost everyone to get a foothold.

Paul.
