Now we all agree there should be no state-sponsored religion. Atheism will not be enforced either. But what about groups who believe in community worship centers--mosques, churches, temples, etc? My idea--and you can disagree--is that part of the RM's jobs are to maintain a community resource fund. Members of the community can get together, work with the RMs, and figure out what their needs are. The RMs can help them get started. By no means is this a free ride; members of the church (or whatever) would be expected to foot some of the resources themselves. But it won't be that big a deal, because rather than "Eat or worship?" it's "Plasma TV or worship?" It has the added benefit of getting rid of those hypocritical people. ![]() Thoughts or objections? |

Personally, I'd like to see it taken care of completely by the people involved. No involvement on the resource manager's part whatsoever. |

Religion is actually benificial for the government and communitys, because religion is what keeps society in order through an element of fear of a divine punishment etc. also it keeps a lot of homeless people off the street, and keeps a lot of people off drugs because they are involved in there religious community. |

In my oponion, a spiteful God, if there is one, should be opposed rather than worshipped, but thats just my opinion. And Im not saying ANY God should be opposed, just a spiteful one. But the point stands that we should avoid taking advantage of any sort of fear, even if we didnt create it, if we used fear of divine punishment to keep order, wed be no better than feudal monarchs. |

first, I don't think god is spiteful, just a simple system of reward and punishment for direct sins. Second, divine fear is essential for those with out morals. With out it, many people would rob and commit crimes if they knew they could get away with it. Few people do good because it's good. |

We aren't going to enforce people to be religious. We aren't going to take it away, either. It's that simple. As far as crime and that lot, there isn't going to be a lot of motivation to do so with what we have in mind. Very simply, crime won't be profitable. |

Alan, jym, this sidebar isn't a religious debate, it's a more cynical "Where's it coming from?" question. And I think individual people will be free to chip in quite a bit. The question is if surplus resources should be allowed to supplement it. |

I understand, and I think that it would be in the governmnts best intrest to support religion (not one more than another, or any of them to excetian) because like I said, People do less crimes, and many soup kitchens are spomserd by religious orginisations |

Thats where I think your wrong. But even otherwise, a punishment that lasts an eternity - punishment for ANYTHING, despite the hard line I might take against rapists - is unjust. But Ill leave it at that.
Sure, I dont see why not. They have to go SOMEWHERE where therell do good, why not support the faiths? |

Well, I suppose. But we shouldn't get into a hoarding mentality either. Let's just resolve it as a "call-'em-as-they-see-'em" situation for the RMs, eh? We need to trust our hypothetical leaders. ![]() EINSTEINEDIT: As no one has seen fit to comment further, I deem this sidebar closed and the issue resolved. |
