No really. Tales of Phantasia's gameplay is horribly annoying to me. I never really got beyond the first big city because I couldn't stand the battles. Tales of Destiny 2 is really trying my patience, too. The only thing that keeps me going is the rather interesting dungeon design, and a plot that actually compels me to keep going. I mean, ToD2 doesn't force you do deal with Semi-Auto, but here's what bothers me about its battles: 1. 100% 2-d battles. This isn't too bad, really, but it's so damn annoying when all the enemies are in the same exact place, attack ones, and single-handedly one-shot your controlled character. Then you have to run back to a damn inn and... You get the picture. 2. Apparent inability to jump over enemies. The jumping over enemies thing is schizophrenic at best. And it's kinda annoying when an early boss is about to do 200 damage to everything in front of her while you try futilely to dodge it. Speaking of schizophrenic, guarding seems to have a chance of straight-out not working. lolwut. 3. Auto-run. Not a huge issue, but when you double tap the button, you don't stop. You run THROUGH enemies (Don't even bring up the above. For some reason, it doesn't work on enemies casting spells.), and keep going until you hit the opposite edge. It's nice when you're dealing with mages, but I'm not used to having to press back to the left to stop running. 4. Incompetent AI. No really, the AI is fucking retarded. At least, the guys on your side are morons. I mean, there's the occasional moment where they'll just happen to sync up to what you're doing perfectly, but no matter how you configure them, they'll always do the opposite of what you want. It's devious. It's almost like they're trying to make it artificially harder. Oh yeah, if an ally's going to heal you, she'll just stand there and let the enemies interrupt her spell while you're getting your ass kicked. Really? Edit: I feel obligated to tell you that your healer is also a fighter. She doesn't run away from the enemies before casting. 5. Using the up-skill. Again, a huge problem for me is using the skill I assigned to up+special. I never had a problem in ToS, but in ToD2, I ALWAYS jump instead of using whatever the equivalent of tiger blade is in this game. And usually it's RIGHT when I need it. x_x But I deal with it, because... Hell, I don't know why. It's far from the worst game I've played, but it annoys me so damn much. I have nothing else to do, I guess. Boredom inspires me to suffer through this game. Ah well. I just need an Xbox 360 so I can try some of those free-movement Tales of games. The ones where the AI seems to actually do smart things. M4S: Play Tales of Symphonia through again, and tell me how many times Kratos/Zelos just stands in a crowd of enemies and attempts to cast First Aid. I guarantee you won't get above the single digits. |
