Fist of the North Star

"What the hell is Prototype, Ultramind?" Well, it's a free-roam game. And actually you can use guns, like this Flak Gun. "Like Oblivion?" Yeah, only in New York. "You mean like GTA." Ummm... sorta. "LAME, next game." Oh come on. Besides being free-roam, it's nothing like GTA. Sure, you'll get to pilot a helicopter or a tank or even an F-22 Raptor, but your main means of getting around will be leaping entire city blocks and jumping around on buildings. "... Okay, you've caught my interest." Better. So, what is Prototype? A farking HOOGE free-roam game set in new York. You play as Alex Mercer, who is... well, the Prototype. "The Prototype? Of what?" Well, prototype isn't just used for the beta phase of a new device or something. Prototype can also be used to describe the first known being of a new species or group. Which is pretty much what Alex is. In Prototype, as said, you play as Alex Mercer. What makes him so special? He's the Prototype; the first of a new species. Apparently, he's had a genetic experiment done on him, as he wakes up with no memory, but some strange new abilties. Now, you may think the amnesia thing has been done to death, but then again, what's a better driving force than to find out about your past by any means necessary, even finding out if you're even human? Or ever were, judging by the circumstances. "... Wow?" Yeah, wow. Upon waking up, Mercer finds that NYC is being invaded by some strange viral contagion, which is mutating the people. This isn't an alien invasion; the virus is homegrown. Mercer himself seems to be somewhere between the two factions. In Prototype, there are three major factions: The Military, the mutants... and you, as you're strong enough to be seen as a threat by both sides. So naturally, this opens up a huge variety of choices. "How so? The Good/Evil thing has been done to death." Not quite like this. You see, New York City is HUGE. Really huge. And they've gone to the trouble of making it look as realistic as possible, even putting real advertisements for real products on billboards and such. All in all, it looks REALLY FREAKING PRETTY. In the awesome way. But enough of that, on to Mercer! Being the Prototype, he has an awesome special ability: He can absorb the people he kills, gaining their skills, memory, and even the ability to assume their identity. Makes a nice, easy way to learn how to fly a helicopter: Jump on one, kill and consume the pilot, and HEY! You can fly a helicopter now. "Well that's freaking awesome." Indeed it is. He also uses consumed being to increase his biomass, which he uses for some pretty neat skills, such as transforming his arms into large, bulky mutant arms for tearing someone a couple new holes. Or covering himself in plated armor like a Zerg. Or slamming a fist into the ground and causing a bunch of spikes to launch up several feet ahead of him. The list goes on, and the developers promise over 750 combinations of skills, assigned to the four D-pad buttons. Offense, Defense, assuming the identities of anyone you've absorbed, and optimizing his senses. Pretty sweet. But that's not all! New York is almost a character itself in-game. It will change in reflection of your actions throughout the game. Damage is highly lasting; explosions don't just leave a small decal on the ground, the smoke sticks around. If you're downwind of an aerial strike a few blocks away, the dust will flow on down to you and suddenly you're blinded for a bit. Explosion marks stay. As it says, "New York can either be the ultimate hiding place or a disaster of a warzone - all depending on the player's choices." These choices are hardly linear. For instance, if the mutants repeatedly attack a miltary installation, you can sit and watch as they eventually batter it down and take over that area, or you can jump into the combat yourself and turn the tide to your liking. Also, hey, weather! The game has weeks of different weather patterns plugged in, so by the time they start repeating (If they even do at all), you'll hardly notice. And holy shit, people! Hundreds of them! If you reveal yourself for what you are, people will run in droves from you. Makes for nice lambs for the slaughter. Always better with a little chase involved. ;) Interaction with the environment! As opposed to simply having a button to press for absolutely every action, the game interprets your intent - Quite well - and responds accordingly. For instance, you drop down from a building, heading toward some unlucky businessman. A cab gets in your way. You don't have to press anything at all; Alex automatically jumps over it as you zone in on the unfortunate sap. He drops pretty quickly, and his body shrinks and melts into the Prototype's body. He uses that extra biomass to morph his arms into huge, misshapen mutant arms. The (huge) crowd begins to scatter, but not before Mercer stalks and easily overtakes a nearby pedestrian, literally splitting him in two. The military arrives, and Alex morphs again, this time growing a plated exoskeleton. He charges at the military troops, with that cab in his way. Instead of jumping over, he simply plows through it as the bullets ping off his new armor. He dispatches the troops, finds and kills their leader, and absorbs him. Alex slips through an alleyway and comes out on the other side looking like the guy. Ahead, there's a military cordon blockading a mutant hive. Mercer strides into their midst, looking like their commander, and punches one of the troops, telling the others that the poor man is the Prototype. They open fire, and the real Prototype goes toward the hive. The big guns show up, so Alex uses his disguise to call in an air strike. How's that for awesome? "That sound you heard was my jaw dropping through the floor." Thought so. |

I only hate it because it's needlessly expensive. NO ONE has used Blu-ray yet, and I doubt anyone ever will. Therefore, its high cost is completely meaningless. I also don't like the fact that I actually walked into GameStop, and they said their PS3 had to be turned off because it overheated.... 3 hours into the day. I don't want a 600$ heater, or a 600$ blu-ray player. The system's drawbacks will lead me to staying away from later games in the Final Fantasy series. Even the KH series, if it does continue on Sony systems. |

I dunno... But, a few things I left out: The story progresses as you collect "nodes". My guess is that these are important people with key knowledge to your past, and as you absorb memories when you kill people... However, not all nodes lead toward that goal. There are some that branch off in random directions. In all, there's over 250 nodes, whcih can tell the Prototype about his past, or go in completely different directions. The makers encourage friends with the game to piece together the nodes they've found to get the whole story. The progression is far from linear, so good luck sollecting all the nodes of this "Web of Intrigue". Also, here's a nice little tidbit: This game supports online multiplayer. In the campaign mode. Which means now you have TWO shapshifting, powerhouse Prototypes running around the streets of New York. You're entirely capable of everything in the multiplayer mode that you're capable of in single player, including story progression. So yeah, that's something to think about. |

Okay a few things to note... Co-op has been taken out. The makers looked at it and looked at it and decided they just couldn't get the same kind of fluid storyline with two of them, so it won't be in the game at launch. They DO, however, hope to add it with DLC, so that shows that these guys are REALLY looking to please the gamers. I wish all game developers did that. On the other hand, check out these fucking awesome gameplay vids. Those are early vids. Alex's mutations now look much more sinister instead of fleshy. And check out how he moves! Holy shit, it's like Altair on every single steroid ever created! As one person said... "I can only describe it as The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Crackdown, Assassin's Creed, Jet Set Radio Future, Killer7, and God Hand thrown into a blender and mixed into a batch of awesome sauce." |

It loads pretty damn quick. There's also the part where it's higher quality, so you can, you know, actually see what's going on. Also, I reserve the right to slap you if you complain about ANYTHING in the video. This is the game at 20% completion. Anything that's wrong with it can and probably WILL be fixed by the time it releases, as the developers REALLY want to satisfy the gamers (Who else is upset by the fact that they have to remove multiplayer, but are hellbent on at least adding it through DLC?) EDIT: Just wanted to throw this out there: Radical has done an amazing job of recreating New York City. In order to do it, they sent people to photograph the city itself, taking upwards of 1100 pictures. The recreation is "About 70-80% accurate, with 20% being made up". One of them even said, "After you play this game, you could probably go to new York and not need a tour guide." Of course, that last one I'm a bit skeptical about, because quite frankly I, personally, am incapable of leaping about the buildings like some kind of more badass Spiderman without the webs, so I won't have much of an idea of the rest of the city, being too busy hopping about the skyline like the psychopath I am. =) EDIT AGAIN: Also, Streaming takes you directly to the video on the site, no downloading necessary. It's about as much of a download as watching a video on Youtube, except this is higher quality. I'm not posting the youtube vid, so if you don't watch these, then you're just being an idiot and missing out on something awesome, much like a Wii fanboy who won't buy a 360 sheerly because he doesn't like it is going to miss out on so many awesome games. |

Harmonix said that about Rock Band's drums. That hasn't been accurate at all. But seriously, yeah, that's pretty damn accurate. Still, if 20% is made up, chances are it's the coolest part. You go to New York and try to find the fake part, and fall into the ocean. >_> |

The 20% that's made up is probably alleyways and such, minor bits. The ocean is hilariously easy to put together. I just hope Alex can swim, unlike just about every single other open-world character. Sans Niko, who can, holy shit, actually swim. If you don't know who Niko is, he's the protagonist of GTA IV. Yes, a GTA protagonist who can actually fucking swim for once. And also do a fuckload of other stuff that makes him infinitely better than any other GTA protagonist ever. Like maintain a consistent framerate up until the point that you and seven of your friends are simultaneously blasting cops with RPGs. I can imagine you might get some actually detrimental slowdown if you had all sixteen people blasting cops with RPGs, but then again, what wouldn't slow down from that? Oh yes and GTA IV has 16 person multiplayer. I really hope it includes freeroam of the city and not just scenarios, which look pretty good anyway. You can't progress the story but you can roam about blowing up Liberty City's (Also modeled after NYC) with sixteen people and that would be FUCKING AWESOME. But I suppose I should save that for a GTA IV topic, huh? |

Don't think they did that us what I'm saying. >_> Also a nice little tidbit... There's three factions against you. One, the military. They're hilariously easy to kill and basically have zero chance against you. Second is the Infected. As you'd see in that video, the more advanced Hunters look like dogs and are very strong and very fast, able to keep up with Mercer even as you hop about rooftops like the superpowered maniac you are, so shaking them is difficult, aim to kill them. Third is Blackwatch, and they're the group that aims to destroy the Infected and you at any and all costs. They'll advance as you do; as your powers grow, they'll deploy new tech to counter you, so defeating them is still difficult even when you've made the military your bitch. Stick around too long with them on you, and they'll deploy the Specialist, a badass with enough firepower to match Mercer. The Specialist has seen your type before, dealt with it all, and even in a one on one fight, he's capable of matching and even BEATING Mercer, so he's nothing to play around with; if he's deployed, you either run like hell, hide and morph, or fight for your life. I don't think you can even kill him until later on in the game. |

That... will probably take a while. Considering that upgrades (Or at least new abilities) are gotten as part of the storyline, when you absorb certain important people, and Blackwatch doesn't come into until partway through the game (Maybe like 10% or something) but they aren't there at the start. |

Two new things I've gleaned from videos. 1. Body surfing. Leap high into the sky, then rocket down at someone and surf across the pavement on them leaving a trail of blood. Fucking OW. 2. Mercer seems to be capable of flying by spraying blood from his arms and legs to act as a propellant. Ugh... This guy is FREAKING SCARY. EDIT: Correction: He sprays the blood from his hands and feet. Kinda like Ironman in the movie... only with blood. |

Very many new vids. You can look them up on Gametrailers for the big HD versions, or just go the the prototype website and head to IGN from there. Co-op confirmed to not be in the game for launch. Boo. This is made up for by the fact that you can elbow drop a tank. And win. And destroy helicopters by throwing people through them. Release is now slated for summer. The videos they showed that CES 09 are in Alpha stage. Yes, that's alpha. A discussion on the GameFAQs board begs this question: What happens if Mercer absorbs Batman? |
