Chapter 1: In the Days of the Circus All people have one head, two eyes, one nose, two eyebrows, two lips, two ears, two legs, ten toes, two arms, and eight fingers. Except Eldard Sacrens, whom nature had cursed with two extra fingers, one on each hand. His parents were glad to finally have had a boy after their four girls, but his deformed hands were unnatural and he was given to the local traveling circus when he was only two years old. The Circus of the Usually Unusual was mainly a freak show, than a more performance-oriented show like other circuses were. Although its freaks did often perform; more emphasis was placed on their weirdness, than their physical abilities. Eldard was one of the more minor attractions, because he wasn't quite as outrageously strange as the other members of the circus. Salas, a man with eerie blue eyes, was deemed more frightening than Eldard on the grounds that all normal people had brown eyes. He often wore large glasses that made his eyes seem several times larger than they actually were. He sat behind a velvet curtain, and when the audience had finished gathering around the curtain it was yanked open by the manager. The sudden shock of those huge blue eyes caused some people to faint, while others simply fell backwards. Salas himself was a very friendly person, and didn't mind being a circus freak because he seemed perfectly normal to himself. He couldn't even see his eyes without the aid of a mirror, while Eldard could plainly see his strange hands. Velin, touted as the ugliest girl on Earth, was another of Eldard's weird acquaintances in the circus. Her room was next to Salas's, and like his, it was fitted with a large barred window so that the customers could see her. She never wore clothes during her performances of acrobatic feats, to show off her horridly skinny body. Her skin was like first fallen snow, and her auburn eyes were like the remnants of the past autumn. Her whole physique made her seem gentle as well as strong. Such description does even begin to convey how ugly she truly was. But to that strange boy Eldard she was the most beautiful thing ever to live. |

Chapter 1: In the Days of the Circus(cont'd) Joen, one of the freaks, belived in an invisible omnipresent cactus. This cactus, he believed, had incredibly low self-esteem, and needed to be praised several times a day to prevent it from destroying the world out of boredom and hopelessness. Joen was mainly a curiosity because of his strange and incredible devotion. In all other ways he was similar to an ordinary person. The "ordinary person" in this world had many very specific atributes. Firstly, the religion of the world was that of Collectionism. The main line of thought in this religion is that since God is all-powerful, then those with greater power are closer to God. Power, however, is mainly measured in aqcuisitions. Therefore, in order to gain as much power as possible, one must gain as many possesions as possible. The people became incredible pack-rats because of this, and skyscrapers were mainly built to house these great collections. On the top floors of these buildings were where the greatest collectors resided. Secondly, weight was of great importance. In an ancient doctrine it was proclaimed that, "To gain great power, one must also gain great weight in their community and become someone people can trust." This weight really meant reputation, but because of literal interpretations most people were incredibly obesse. Thirdly, when people weren't collecting they watched television in a trdition that goes back millenia. There was only one television show to watch, but everyone watched it whenever they had a chance. This show, which was broadcasted from 6 AM to 6PM, was of an arena in great circumference in which great beasts were cast and fought wariors to the death. These battles were sponsored by the greatest man in the whole world, Risico Kaeser. |
