A girl, her hair greasy and ragged, stumbled from an alleyway as the sky grew brighter. Her clothing, worn and torn, was covered with small stains and bits of grease. Wiping her eyes blearily, she brushed her hair behind her ears.

She squinted, appearing to be in pain.

Weak, starving, and penniless, she had nowhere to go.

Oceane shivered, despite the heat.

She felt despair that was not her own.

"Stop that." she muttered as she slid against a wall, preparing for a day of begging.

If I were still alive, I would help you. I would give you money and feed you.
Jo was concerned.

"Well, you're part of us now. You're in as much trouble as I am." Oceane mumbled back.

Jo pondered that for a moment. You're right. We need to work as a team, given that this is our body, our situation.

Oceane felt an odd calm understanding that was not hers, yet it helped her to raise her head and look at the early-morning passerby.

The city was a dangerous place for Clyde to be. Not a single part of him could be mistaken for a normal human. His giant, thick frame was banded with iron muscle and matted brown hair. His head mostly bear, with a long snout full of crushingly powerful teeth. His fingers hands were thick and clawed. He covered himself in rags when he had to, painfully jamming his pawed feet into a large pair of boots he found in the garbage.

On this particular morning, he was foraging for food in a dumpster of a back alley. It wasn't gourmet, but he could only move at night. It was this or nothing.as he loudly pawed through the refuse, cramming bits of apple cores and pizza crusts into his mouth, he was vaguely aware of a human passing by. Probably a hobo. They were usually too drunk to pay him any mind.

He turned to watch her step around the corner. She was talking to herself.

He dropped a beer bottle and it shattered.

Oceane twitched as she heard something shatter down the alley behind her.

"Jo..."

Relax. It's probably nothing. Just look down and check. If it's another crazed hobo, leave. If it's not, don't.

Oceane twisted and peered down the alley. It was dark, but she could make out a large shape, staring at her.

Her eyes widened.

The girl was visibly cautious of him. Her eyes widened as most did when their gaze fell on his inhuman bulk. He nervously returned her gaze, not sure of what to do. If he chose to spoke, his deep gravely voice might frighten her into a fit, and if she screamed, he would have no choice but to escape. This meant shedding his rags and exposing himself. He couldn't run in boots.

He chose to appear as innocent as possible. He lowered his gaze and whimpered, the air vibrations from his vocal chords sounding like the exhaust from a truck. He sank to his knees in the dirty alley, scooping the shards of glass into the worn leather gloves he wore awkwardly over his oversized hands. His claws had already poked through the fingertips. As he he wiped his hands of the dirt, he stole an innocent glance at the girl, apologetic.

He's showing that he won't hurt you. Jo said, before Oceane could even voice her question.

Oceane tilted her head, considering the situation. She rose, barely, and twisted around the rest of the corner. She approached slowly, half-crouching and half-crawling.

When she was about five feet away from the man, she stopped and looked up at him, meeting his gaze.

Clyde didn't know how to react. In his years of freedom, he had never had what appeared to be a stone sober person approach him willfully. His conversation had been limited to the few experiments he had been allowed to socialize with, and the men wearing white that always poked him with needles. He didn't understand why they did that. It used to make him cry until they started keeping him under heavy sedation. He didn't know it, but they were afraid of him. He had been kept in a separate cage because the experiments in captivity often fought, and the scientists feared that he would kill the entire enclosure if provoked.

He could.

He wouldn't.

Years of abuse and degradation left him unaware of just how powerful he was. In his mind, he was just a homeless man. Well. Homeless, at least.

So when the girl approached, stopping only 5 feet from him to meet his gaze, he had no idea what to do. He simply did not have social skills.

He cocked his shaggy head to one side, his brown eyes meeting Oceane's with fascination and curiosity. What did she want from him? Would she try to hurt him? Was she going to scream?

Oceane's eyes widened as the man moved his head and revealed himself to be, in fact, not a man at all.

"Jo!" she whispered, barely audible.

Another experiment, I should think. Look at how he's wearing clothing.

Very slowly, Oceane sat back on her heels. Even more slowly, she unfolded her extra set of arms, sliding them out of holes in her shirt.

Four palms up, she gazed back at him, wondering what he would do.

Deeply confused by what he saw, Clyde moved in closely, drawing in her scent out of curiosity. She certainly smelled human. This was certainly a unique situation for him, but he was used to that anyway. So when the girl unfurled an extra pair of arms, he was more curious than alarmed.

"What...are...you?" he asked. His voice was deep and rich, but the words struggled against his throat.

"An experiment." Oceane lowered her gaze, looking at a piece of glass. "Like you."

She paused, wondering how much she should explain.

Taking in a deep breath to steel her nervous excitement at finding another being like her, she began.

"They melded me with the genes of another human. I grew an extra set of arms, and... well, she's in my head."

I swear, do I count for nothing? Jo commented, getting annoyed at the lack of appreciation for the situation she was currently in.

Oceane frowned.

Clyde understood those words. He'd heard them before. He had trouble grasping that the he and the girl shared a common ground, because he'd simply never had anything in common with anyone. For years he had avoided all contact with humans. He'd found a portable tv once, and found it fascinating, but he had trouble understanding it when he watched.

"You are two people?" He asked.

The words came easier as his throat cleared.

"Yes." Oceane nodded and folded away the extra set of arms. "But... I don't know how to let you meet her."

Jo pondered this for a moment. Perhaps you could relax control, as if you're going to sleep?

A sharp pang of concern and fear from Oceane caused her to add, very gently, I promise to give you control back.

Oceane closed her eyes and breathed deeply, a meditation exercise her mother had taught her long ago.

Jo slipped in to control, past Oceane's relaxing consciousness.

"Hello." Her voice startled her: it was deeper, more mature, than Oceane's, and a bit rougher. Oceane's voice was the higher-pitched lilt of a fourteen year old.

Surely she was playing a trick on him. He paused before speaking, trying to decide what to say.

"Hello," he said simply. He was nervous. Now he was meeting not one, but two people. That's two more than he had contact with in the past 12 or so years. He was having trouble soaking it all in. He was used to half men/half creatures, but a person that was actually two people? "My name is Clyde."

He stretched out his massive hand as he had seen done on television.

"I am happy to meet you...both."

Jo let Oceane slip back in to control, realizing that this would be better for her to do.

Oceane cautiously held out her hand and gingerly placed it in his massive hand, her small pale one feeling very, very vulnerable. She was not used to meeting new people; most of her time before the Project had been spent sick or with her sister. The move to America had rendered her very shy and self-conscious about her accent, which, thanks to the help of her sister, was now gone.

"And..we are pleased to meet you?" She did not mean it as a question, but that is how it came out - she hadn't had interactions like this in several years, perhaps before the move.

Clyde offered a sheepish smile. A friend. He had never had one. If you didn't count the few experiments that he had brief relationships with. He opened his mouth to speak when someone caught his eye. At the end of the alley, a man had been watching the interaction between the two. Clyde had been so busy reminding himself how to have a conversation that he hadn't noticed. He was talking to himself. No. Into an ear piece. He began walking quickly down the alley, reaching into his coat.

Oceane noticed Clyde's gaze change and turned.

She froze. Not sure who the man was, but certain that he was bad news, she needed to run.

But she couldn't leave Clyde here, not now. She stepped closer to him, unsure of what to do but wanting to be physically closer to a being she knew was much stronger than she.

((nice! ))
