So you scholars may you please help me..practicing advanced algebra for a placement test for auniversity..anyways..i'm kinda stuck on a problem and it's been annoying me for a quite a while..

Anyway the problem is

Jim can fill a pool carrying bucks of water in 30 minutes. Sue can do the same job in 45 minutes. Tony can do the same job in 1 ½ hours. How quickly can all three fill the pool together?

Any Help

All right. I'll help you. As the Smartest person on this board it is my duty to help those in need of intellectual assistance.

What I did first is to give the pool a value, how many buckets it will take to fill it up. I picked 90 (because 30, 45, and 90 both go into 90 evenly).

So.... divide 90 by 30, 45, and 90, and you get 3, 2, and 1

So douche bag number one can do 3 buckets a minute, douche bag two can do 2 buckets a minute, and douche bag three can do 1 bucket a minute.

So, you combine the efforts of all the douche bags into one giant bag of doucheness and every minute they fill the thing with 3+2+1=6 buckets of water.

90/6= 15 minutes

ROFL PWND.

I didn't call anyone dumb.

Hmm..never thought about the filling up pool thing. Thanks.

Now this...If Sally can paint a house in 4 hours, and John can paint the same house in 6 hour, how long will it take for both of them to paint the house together?

ack...i understood how you guys did the pool one but this is another one i just..am stuck on.

Sally can paint 3 houses in 12 hours
John can paint 2 Houses in 12 hours

3+2 = 5 12/5 = 2.4 hours.. so... 2 hr 15 min?
40 percent of 60 minutes is..ok i got it. Nvm Thanks anyways

2 hr 24 min

Well, you can use the same concept. This is an algebra test, so you can just arbitrarily pick values for this type of problem so you can get it to work.

All right, let's say the house is 24 square feet. (4x6=24, small house)

So Sally can paint at a rate of 6 square feet an hour and John can go at 4 square feet an hour, together they go at 10 square feet an hour (damn, they're slow. Unless she's painting a mural or something...).

So..... 24/10 is 2.4 hours.

Or Two hours and 24 minutes.

oh... I see you got it yourself.

I think that 16/2=8 not 5/2.
