All right, in this tutorial I will show you how I do smudge signatures. This isn't a nub tutorial, I expect you to already know your way around photoshop by now if you're reading this. So I'm not going to post pictures of where buttons are and stuff....

First, I start off with a gray. It really doesn't matter the EXACT gray but in case you're wondering the gray I used was: #797979

Next, paste in your render, only don't resize it. Desaturate it, and then use a distort filter on it. I chose Ocean ripple with default settings. You can just leave it on normal, but most of the time you'll want to take down the fill on it to about 40%

Now, my render didn't take up the whole sig, so I added some brushing. You also might want to do this if you don't think your background has enough contrast.
Posted Image

Now drop your render in and duplicate it a bunch of times. About 3 to 8 is usually about right, depending on how much smudging you feel necessary.

and smudge away!

My settings are:
Brush Tip Shape:
Chalk: 23 pixels
Shape Dynamics:
Size Jitter: 100%
Minimum Diameter: 71%
Angle Jitter: 64%
Roundness Jitter: 79%
Scattering
Scatter: 313%
Count: 2
Count Jitter: 98%

Smoothing
Is checked

For this sig, I chose to put the smudge on the blending mode Linear Dodge but you may choose another blending mode, or you may choose not to do it at all.

Now, reveal another render layer, and smudged it again. I also put this layer on linear dodge.

...and again I left this layer on normal.
Posted Image

I added I color balance mostly towards red, with a little yellow and magenta in there.
Posted Image

Now I revealed my final render layer, and to help blend it in, I smudged the outsides of it, changing the size of the brush to something like 3 pixels.
Posted Image

Now for some lighting. create a New layer, and do a radial gradient from where you want the light source to be, I put this layer on overlay.
Posted Image

I add a c4d rende to make the background a little bit more detailed.
Posted Image

Now, I added a whole bunch of adjustment layers:

I added a Black and white gradient map on darken at 28% opacity.

I added an orange and purple gradient map on overlay at 37% opacity.

I added a curves layer and a levels layer.
Posted Image

******FROM HERE ON OUT IT IS GOING TO DIFFER FOR EACH PIECE YOU ARE WORKING ON, USE THIS AS A MODEL, BUT GO WITH WHAT YOU FEEL IMPROVES YOUR SIG!******

Next I CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+E to do apply image, and did a sharpen filter on this layer. I lowered the opacity to 23% and erased some spots.

I added some c4d layers on overlay.
Posted Image

I noticed his chest wasn't blended very well so I smudged it a little.
Posted Image

I added a levels layer to brighten things up a bit.
Posted Image

Did some brushing near his face with a soft round brush and lowered the opacity to 65%.
Posted Image

Then I just added some text and a border and I'm done!
