Enhance Design Part 2: Metal Scatter Part 2 of Part 2

This is the second part of an Enhance Design Tutorial, Part 1 taught you how Interface, Part one not needed for this tutorial if you just want a nice looking banner. This part teaches you how to smudge using that scatter effect and getting a constrast between black and white creating a "metallic" feel. Also lightings techniques for special effects.

Find an image you would like to add to this banner, any image is fine as long as it looks 3D or else the interface woul be out of place, also it would be easier if it was already rendered (no background)
I will be using:

11.Copy and paste the image into the previous document below all the other layers except for the background

Or if you are just starting part 2, paste it into a new signature size document filled with a gray color.

Now time to smudge and make metal scatter out of the image. Before we get to the smudge, We need to make an "X" brush if you don't already have one.
make a new document 100x100px and is transparent.
Take your text tool and type an "X" in the font of Vernanda set to 106pt or to the size that fit the whole document, it depends on your resolutions. Position that X so that it fits completely like mine:

Now go up to Edit>>Define Brush Preset.

Ok that is done. Now we will smudge

12. Duplicate the image layer, CTRL+Click on the top image layer.Hue and Saturate it:
Posted Image

Use these settings:
Posted Image

Afterward go up to layer>>merge down.

13. Grab the Smudge Tool and on top of the option bar make sure the Strength is at 100% and select the X brush on your brush tool.
Posted Image

14. Go up to the Brush settings (located on the top right hand corner and set it to this:
Posted Image

15. Now on the layer that you just merged down smudge it outward (you should be smudging the gray image):
Posted Image

16. Right-Click on that layer and duplicate it then set the blend mode to Color Dodge.
Posted Image

It should look like this now.
Posted Image

17. Now again use the smudge tool with the same settings and smudge that duplicated layer that was just set on Color Dodge. Make sure you smudge some towards the Pipe abit, we will be doing some effects for that later, like this:
Posted Image

18. On your layer pallette you should still have you original image layer, click on it and drag it above the two gray layer that you smudged.
Posted Image

You should get something similar to this.
Posted Image

19. Make a new layer right above the image layer like this:
Posted Image

Grab the Polygonal Lasso Tool, set the feather to 10px:
Posted Image

On that new layer make a selection point from the image outward toward the interface.
When Selecting:
Posted Image

After Selecting:
Posted Image

After selection, right-click and fill with white then CTRL+D to deselect:
Posted Image

Wow you are almost finish, you don't have to follow the next couple of steps if you don't want to.

Optional: To give some lightings to the image, duplicae the new layer that you filled white, go up to Filter>>Blur>>Motion Blur, use these settings:
Posted Image

Optional two: Adding some dark contrast. Make a new layer beneathe the image layer. Make a selection similar to this with the Polygonal Lasso Tool.
When Selecting:
Posted Image

After Selection:
Posted Image

After selection right-click and fill with black then change blending mode to overlay, then set Opacity to about 40%.
Posted Image

20. To colorize go all the way down to the background layer and click it, Now on the layer pallette click on the half white and black circle and use Color Balance.
Posted Image

Set it to the color that matches your interface or image. I highly suggest setting the Highlight to about +15to30 or -15to30 of your color scheme.
CTRL+Click on your image>>color balance to color the image if you want. I colored my rendered and used the selectiong tool feathered to 10px and erase some parts of my color on the render for some realistic lighting.

None image color:

Partial color:
Posted Image

Now add some extra texts, borders, and effects, and you are done.
Posted Image

You can also make the interface flow with the rest of the banner by using the lighting technique from one of the optional step.
Posted Image

I definaetly hope you learn some new lightings, smudging, scattering, contrasting, and some Interfaced techniques from this tutorial.

You can find the PSD version of the banner I used here, but you have to be a member to download it, so if you like this tutorial please sign up, you can find great PSD's and more tutorials.
