Tutorial © Realgfx.net Please sign up at http://forums.realgfx.net if you like it. In this tutorial you will learn how to make an icy glow effect without filters. Made for Adobe Photoshop 7+ 1. Make a new document any signature size you want with a white background. File->New->330x120 2. Open a render you want to use and paste it into the new file you just made. Right-click select all Ctrl+C to copy and then Ctrl+V to paste on new document. Note:A render is a PNG image with a transparent background you can find one in our render database ![]() 3. Now on your layer palette make a new layer under your render layer so that we can add the background. ![]() 4. On that new layer add some brushes in black don't fill it up with too much brushes leave some white spaces or else this tutorial will not workt. I will be using some ice-ish brushes. As you can see below the render does not blend in with the background. If yours is like that we have to blend that in. ![]() 5. To blend in the render grab your Polygonal lasso tool, at the top on the otpion bar change the feather from 0 to around 10-15 px. I used 10px. Now on your render layer select the edges you want to blend in. ![]() Hit the backspace or Ctrl+X to delete then Ctrl+D to deslect: The render should now blend in like this ![]() 6. Now we are going to color the signature. We would want to use something that doesn't completely colorize the render so I will be using the color balance. Go up to Layer->New Adjustment Layer->Color Balance You can play around with the settings but I will be using this setting which is blue for more of the realistic ice look. ![]() You should get something similar this if you used the same setting as I did. ![]() 7. Now go up to Layer->Merge Visible. You should now have only one layer, duplicate it. (Right-click on the layer->duplicate) Now set the blend mode to Overlay. ![]() You should get this after setting the blending mode to Overlay. ![]() 8. Grab the Polygonal lasso tool now change the feather from 10 to 0 and select something like icy triangles pointing inward exstanding outward, If your render is similar to mine you should not be selecting the face. ![]() 9. Now Right-click->Select Inverse ![]() Now hit backspace or Ctrl+X to delete. Ctrl+D to deselect. ![]() It looks icy enough but we are not done yet the render looks dull compared to the rest of the signature, but if you think it looks good you can stop on this step. 10. Now to change that, on the layer pallette select the layer beneath the one you just deleted the selected area from(in other words the first layer or the background layer.) and duplicate it. Set the blending mode to Soft Light on that layer. ![]() Optional: You can lower the opacity until it looks good on the layer that you just set the blend mode to Soft Light. I lowered mine to 75%. ![]() Now add some text and extra effects and you are done! ![]() I hope you all have learned a new technique from this tutorial ![]() If you like this tutorial and would like to get the brushes/PSD file that I used in this tutorial please sign up here at http://Realgfx.sytes.net and PM me. |
