Umm you can put on texture setting on your brushes and play around with the layer options, that's what I do.

Grunge banners, think of it as brushes. Download grunge brushes and mess with them, basically. You'll get use w/ them after working with them for awhile.

Yes like what Yinx said, but the hard thing with grunge is that sometime it doesn't look blended or has no depth you fix this by having a white background make a new layer, brush using black until the whole thing is like black grayish, make another layer brush in white but don't fill it up all white, and you keep doing that back and forth with white to black and black to white using different grunge brushes as well, and it should give you some depth or use the levels ctrl+L.

the grudge brushes set didn`t work for my version of PS and alot of the brushes on deviantart.com doesn`t either. xP So now I make grudge banners using filters.

You can use the radical gradient with the colors black and white and then smudge it with one of the default 'chalk' brushes with some settings on it. Duplicate and set it on soft light then smudge some more to get some lighting.

i dont use brushes.. but for the simplest lighting without any effects is duplicate the layer a couple of times and change the topest layer to color dodge and it should give the image a a nice shadow and lighting effect.

might even work for grunge banners. might give even grunge more depth and light... i havent tried it for brushes and grunge, etc
