First in Command

Name: Hardrive C. Echidhog Rank: Commander Security Clearance: Level 7 Date: December 14, 20XX Subject: The fall of Mother, the rise of EXE Friday night was… a lesson. It was a lesson we need to think about and carry with us in all out future missions. Friday night was the night we almost killed ourselves. It started off unassumingly enough. We took a trip to a factory that manufactured automobile parts using, among other things, a Chaos Drive. There was a suspicious lack of activity on behalf of the night crew, so my team – Tom, Jenet, Hype, Camitzal, and Jenni – snuck in to take a look around. We quickly discovered that Jenna had reached the factory before us, as a small group of droids and Brotherhood Mobians were attempting to steal the Chaos Drive. We disabled the Mobians quickly but were ambushed by two droids as we focused on the ones with the Drive. In the end, three managed to escape – one with the Drive – but not before we were able to tag it and backtrack the signal controlling it to its original source. That took about an hour to do and so in the meantime we called the TDP and briefed them on what happened after they arrived. With the Mobians in custody to receive the proper care their condition required, we tracked the signal back to its source – a power station near the edge of Metropolis. Using the Black Diamond provided us with enough stealth to be able to close in on the station and survey the guards patrolling it – Brotherhood guards, as seen by the implants on their necks. We placed a call to the TDF before beginning our infiltration of the complex. Our assault wasn’t a secret for very long. In fact, our cover was blown the moment we stepped through the side door and accidentally came across a group of Mobians at work. More Brotherhood. As soon as they saw us, they attacked, although one of their number put up an electrical barrier barring our progress and disappeared deeper into the complex, no doubt to warn Jenna. We found an alternate path forward but an old E-100 Series Eggman droid got the drop on us and nearly fried us to a crisp. Luckily, some quick thinking and good aim allowed us to proceed. We confronted the droid in the next room and dispatched it, but not before in nearly incapacitated us with sealing foam and a freak metal-on-metal screech. More time was stolen from us as we stopped to regroup before we drove ahead and into the control room where Jenna was waiting for us. We found Jenna, two of her guards and the freshly completed body for EXE in the control room. EXE was already in the process of downloading itself into its body when we arrived and the battle Jenna provoked was meant to distract us and stall us long enough for the transference to complete. And it succeeded. We got so wrapped up in battle, and dealing with the injured, that we failed to upload the virus in time… but I’ll get back to that in a minute. I took on Jenna directly and nearly got fried by her electrical storms. Jenni and Tzal ganged up on one guard while Tom went after the other. Hype got injured in the crossfire and Tom was sent crashing into a row of consoles and rendered temporarily unconscious by the resulting electric shock. Tzal was able to take down one of the guards before she and Jenni moved to attack the other. Despite being wounded, Hype fought to upload the virus, losing consciousness just after he uploaded it. Moments later, the other guard was brought down, leaving me and Jenna to conclude our business. Around that time, Tom woke up – but he wasn’t ‘Tom’ any more. The… consciousness? I’ll have to rely on that for now. The consciousness known as the Judge had overtaken him and drove him to punish the guilty, starting with the most guilty ‘creature’ in the room – EXE. As he approached the unresponsive robot, I was able to get the jump on Jenna – but not before she fried half of my body with her attacks. She shut down, but not before she, and the rest of us, watch EXE spring into action. Exe responded coolly and calmly to the Judge’s attack, forcing him backwards and rising to meet him. Mizz and Ramah arrived at that moment to lend some support to our beleaguered team. Mizz immediately began assisting the wounded – healing Hype and passing Imbrium’s Elixir to Jenni so she could heal me – while Ramah ran to assist the Judge in dealing with EXE. After regaining consciousness and healing enough to check the computer console, Hype revealed what we had already figured out – we were too late in delivering the virus. The Judge kept up his attack on EXE, even going so far as to use his metal wings against the mechanical monster. EXE proved vulnerable to the alloy in the wings but erected an electrical shield that stunned the Judge momentarily before proceeding to go after him, only to have Ramah intervene and draw his attention away. EXE was priming for a Chaos Blast channeled from the chaos emerald in his chest when Jenet pulled his attention away. During the battle, Jenet had reassembled a weapon borrowed from the TDF into what could only be described as an energy bazooka. She had primed the weapon throughout the battle and unleashed it right as EXE unleashed his own blast at her. The energy met in the center of the room, the backlash driving us back and slagging the ceiling and floor, but Jenet’s attack was able to punch through EXE’s hastily fired beam and blow the robot out of the control room and into one of the generators in the room below. The damage to the generators immediately triggered a meltdown, of sorts, and alarms began to blare their warning to all personnel to leave the building immediately. We didn’t take the hint. Our command structure broke down at this point and chaos consumed us. For some reason, orders got mixed up, individuals acted alone, and we could not retreat in time to avoid the destruction unleashed by the exploding generators. We couldn’t escape the fires and the collapsing structure. We just weren’t fast enough. Luckily, we had someone on our side who was. Mizz was able to set up shields around us as we were buried in the wreckage. She and Ramah supported the barriers and kept us alive long enough for the initial explosions to demolish the building. With all that initial energy expended, I brought down the pocket dimension I had erected earlier and undid the damage to the building. By then, the Judge had subsided and Tom returned. We escaped, but so did EXE – Ramah and Mizz can attest to that. We did not come away empty handed, though – Jenna’s in our custody, and I plan to make certain she never hurts anyone again. A copy of my report will go to the TDF and GUN – they won’t be happy, but I’ll try to cover our asses as best as I can. The truth of the matter is, we were sloppy. Our teamwork was probably the best seen in a long time, but we couldn’t coordinate and progress as fast as we should have. We lost sight of the objective and allowed ourselves to be distracted by smaller battles non-threatening injuries. We’re so used to taking on organic opponents, enemies who will engage us in a straight up fight that we can’t adapt well to situations necessitating quick progress and efficient incapacitation of our enemies. I know there are special cases that can be brought up against what I’ve said, and if you feel the need to make an issue out of it, I’ll be glad to speak with you in private. But just remember this. Our mistakes that night nearly killed us. In fact, they would have, had Mizz not been there to save us. We owe her our lives. |
