Name: Hardrive C. Echidhog Rank: Commander Security Clearance: Level 7 Date: July 19, 20XX Subject: The Setup Last night’s mission started off well – our first sign that things were going to blow up in our faces. About halfway through the bust, things really started going wrong. We set up a perimeter around the church where Kilamo’s meeting was going down and waited about an hour and a half for it to fill up. We had no idea when Kilamo was arriving so we had to wait for all the cultists to gather before moving in. When what we guessed to be the last of them arrived, we made our move. Vector, Goth, Loki, and Camitzal all went around back to make sure no one tried to sneak out. Tom took up a sniping position at a window above the main entrance. Jenet, Hype, Arisa, Fraise, Jenni, and I stormed right in through the front door. Red carpeting and tapestries hung everywhere. The cultists themselves were draped in cloaks. At the alter, Kilamo was just launching into some kind of eulogy. She was less than happy to see us barge in and quickly sic’d her minions on us. I used my grappling rod to swing over them and engage her directly while the others behind me started fending them off. Hype and Arisa deserve special recognition in their fight against the cultists, using a combination of stunning and incapacitating techniques in taking them out of the fight. Tom and Jenet maintained firing positions, dissuading anyone from getting too close from our people and keeping Kilamo on edge. I fought Kilamo alone, drilling her on Dresden’s murder while contending with both her and her pet, Trix. A surprising addition to the fight was Hunter, a mercenary under Kilamo’s control, who filled the room with smoke bombs in attempt to turn the tide of the fight in Kilamo’s favor. From a position behind the alter, the auxiliary group prepared to enter the battle but was held back by Vector. Dominus gained control and unleashed a vicious parabola attack and took out nearly half the cultists in a single blow – but considering I had urged everyone to avoid using such devastating abilities, I wonder how much use it really was. The majority of the cultists were wounded and mangled, and yet they kept fighting, like living zombies… like dolls. About then Kilamo dropped a bombshell that was only topped by a later revelation. She’s normally one to gloat and claim as much credit for her kills as she can, but she denied having any involvement with Dresden’s murder. She was not the killer. Added to my growing frustration was her new blood-influenced abilities… Things really got worse here. The cultists were maimed and damaged but kept coming. Kilamo was still fighting. And a bellow of rage from outside the churched announced the arrival of Slang. Goth quickly went to engage him while the rest of us tried to do damage control. I was getting an upper hand on Kilamo when she unleashed the one weapon we couldn’t effectively fight against. Taking advantage of a lull in our battle, she Screamed. Hectapol’s Scream immediately disabled all fighters, enemy and ally alike. Hype had to merge with Sal to avoid the damage while I used spirit energy to deafen myself. Many unlucky cultists had their blood boil to the point where their heads gruesomely exploded. In a last-ditch effort to shut her up, Hype hurled a massive fireball at her. I thought the attack had struck home since the Scream died a moment later; but as I turned my eyes towards Kilamo, the real reason for her silence was revealed. Amidst the smoke of Hype’s passing fireball, Jonas held Kilamo from behind, one hand at her throat and the other buried in her chest. As we recovered he threw her away from him disdainfully and withdrew a sphere of some kind of dark power from her. He then unveiled himself as the one responsible for Dresden’s death. The murder had been a setup meant to provoke us into searching for Nakamaro and Kilamo. He claimed that they both had something he wanted and manipulated us into doing the dirty work of locating them for him. This entire time, we were being played. Jonas paused near Jenet as he headed towards the exit of the ruined church. Muttering something nonsensical, he plunged his hand into her chest and retrieved something similar to Kilamo… yet when his hand was removed, Jenet was unharmed. Hype was the first to act and charged Jonas, who then called on Lucien. The window above the entrance, where Tom had been stationed, exploded inward in a deluge of water that slammed Hype into one of the side walls. It then took the form of an arm – that of Lucien’s Great Fury. Jonas revealed nothing about what he had taken or what his true goals were but he did promise that we would find out soon. His piece having been said, Jonas left. The kicker? He served up a big enough distraction to allow Kilamo to escape. The aftermath of the mission was just as messy as the mission itself. In the final tally none of us were severely wounded although many of us will be spending some time recovering from the fight. The church was practically destroyed – I found out later that the entire place simply collapsed a few hours after the TDF cleared the area. As for the cultists… well… many of them didn’t make them. Those who did were severely wounded – some missing limbs, others permanently deaf. Many suffered psychological breaks while in the hospitals. The final numbers haven’t reached me yet but I don’t think any of them emerged unscathed. Their parents and relatives – many being wealthy Tolarian socialites – are severely pissed off, but in a strange twist of fate, they aren’t blaming us. We failed on several fronts that night. We could not bring in Kilamo or Slang and we could not save the cultists. I want everyone to think about that. There were innocents under Kilamo’s control and what did we do? We brought the entire freakin’ place down around them, nearly killed them, and failed to protect them from Kilamo. Hell, Kilamo’s gifts of ‘immortality’ did more to keep them alive than we did. We failed, miserably. And with Nakamaro and Kilamo at large – not to mention Jonas and Lucien – we can’t afford to fail this badly again. There is no option for us. We have to be better. |
