Update 5/4/13 Main Menu & Features

Hello everyone!

As always, thank you for your patience! ^^; My life is still a bit hectic at the moment but I AM working on things! I've been working on finishing the main menu and battle system designs and I could use some input.

I had always wanted to do a system based on a max of five battle-active party members, but I think the game could be more fun and efficient with something a little different. My final decision is to do a max of three battle-active party members, HOWEVER, each active party member can select another character to be their "Support". Basically what this will mean is that you will technically have six party members in battle, but you're only actively using three. Depending on which character you have acting as your support, the active party member's stats will increase and decrease, giving you certain advantages and disadvantages. It will help to balance out party members or help boost their strongest or weakest stats. This will also allow you to use "Support" techniques, which are the equivalent of combination attacks (such as in Chrono Trigger or PSSM: Another Story). The combination attacks available will be unique for every possible combination, and you will unlock new moves by purchasing them with Tech Points in the Abilities menu, just like with normal Techs and Magic abilities.

In battle, you will be able to switch between which character is the active character and which is the Support character. Support characters cannot be hurt in battle, and when using Support techniques, it will only consume the MP of the active party member.

If anyone needs further clarification on all that, feel free to ask away. ^^ I just feel that since the Sailor Moon story is so centered around friendships, it makes more sense to utilize a system that incorporates that. I'm still working out the details of just how complex the system will be, but what I've explained so far covers the basics.

And now for the main menu design:

I'm still playing with the fonts and whatnot. It's been difficult to find a font for the character info that looks okay small. If anyone has any specific fonts in mind that might work better, I'll try 'em out!

Who's the support character attached to Mars? It's a secret. :)

UPDATE* 5/5/13

Made a few changes on the menu. Cleaned up the text a bit, added a little more saturation to the backgrounds so the colors pop a bit more, and changed the selection bar to a cursor arrow, and have shown how it will work.

In the second shot, you see how the cursor takes the place of the icons depending on what you've selected, and the third screen shows how you can go right to select party members, and that is how you will change the party. I also added little icons below the names of the party members, to match the support party member icons below.

I don't know why they have lipstick on, but its a little...ugh too much. This is being accurate to the old artwork right? It should at least look a little softer, I'm sorry. LunaDown

Going from a standard system of five party members to a main party/support party sounds like a lot of work. It also sounds like it will be great once it's finished. I love the idea with the combo attacks and stats boosts. The only thing I wonder about is would it be possible to switch the main/support character mid battle or would that just complicate the system two much? An example of a main/support turn based system with the ability to switch the characters would the the Mana Khemia games if you ever played them. They have my personal favorite turn based combat of all time.

As for the menu I can certainly say I like the style. The menu itself is clear and follows the cell phone theme you mentioned at some point. As for the art work I agree with SaillorMoon fan; it looks great!

...Now I'm really curious about who the character supporting Rei is.

@GJL1z: The Senshi have lipstick on in a lot of the artwork from the manga. That part is perfectly normal with the original artwork. On the other hand I can see where the comment about it needing to be softer comes from. I like the look but it is more sharp then the manga's art.

Thanks for the input everyone! I can see about making the lipstick a little softer. I chose to keep that style from the manga artwork since when they transform, they do say "Make-Up!", after all.

You'll be able to switch them mid battle, yes. VenusPose You'll only be able to switch between active and support though, you won't be able to completely change the party in battle.

It looks great! I can't wait for the release!

But I think the menu design is a bit...What's the word? Dull. It is all grey and has little color apart from the characters. Add a bit more color maybe? Sorry to be a critic but it had to be said.

Overall though, it looks great!

The menu looks extremely modern. (More modern than in other RPGs.) I like that and the use of icons. The "Main Menu" Text looks strange. I think a monospace font would be a better choice. (And most other fonts on the menu seem to be monospace.)

Rei Hino looks awesome, but Usagi seems to be rather weird with that lipstick.
