I think that people are maybe just turned off by that empty space to the right and that it feels like the layout is taking up a lot of space. (Which it isn't taking up much more room than the previous one, just feels like it) With a little bit of editing I think people will see the light. ^^ |

I liked the older one better, with the command button circles at the top, but only because it reminds me of the original RPG's layout. Once playing, I should have no problem with this one though. I like the time wheel When you said you'd have the sprites flash when they could act, did you mean they'd be constantly flashing UNTIL we make them act, or they would flash just once or twice? Otherwise, I think just making the white border around their boxes thicker would be fine. Just looking at the pictures, I hadn't realized Usagi's box was any different from the others' until I read what you said about it and went back to check. OH! Or you could make them have a colored glow when they are ready to act. Like an aura or something Edited by loveHELLO, Aug 19 2009, 08:09 PM.

I think that's the main reason too, that people are turned off by the empty space. I love the new design! It's fresh, creative, and not generic. The cresent moon is a good idea. I'm really pleased by the updated look! Nice job Chains!

Personally I love the new version of the battle system layout better. I think it succeeds in being sleeker like you said you had wanted, and it just looks nicer overall. And maybe outlining their health box in white a little thicker and making that flash? Or maybe have the other ones a bit faded into the background (no idea if that's even possible) and then the active character who you're about to do a command for is in full-colour and not faded at all. I also agree that having some kind of background for the attack commands would be good just to make it look more interesting. The rest of the main battle part is nice and colourful, so as-is it looks bland in comparison. |

Wow. Almost speechless! You got me out of my forum-skulking to comment..... I love it! The time wheel is a GREAT idea, it's so original and colourful too! I guess it does look a bit strange with the bars being piled up on the left with the big gap on the right... And L-R up-down stuff would take getting used to... But otherwise it's great~ I love the font, and the graphics, and the system. It's just wow! I'd also go with a pointer or outline over actual sprite flashing... Maybe a pointer that moves up and down like 1 pixel? But it's coming along great!

This is more so what I meant. I can live with the weird (for me) control, it will just take some getting used to. (Not that I really have a choice, haha)
I also like this idea.

I think part of the issue with the new layout is the amount of color variation going on. It would look a bit better with some sort of uniform color scheme (instead of everyone's thematic colors as the background for their stat bars). The select box (white border) could do well to be wider. Plus it's seems very content heavy on the bottom while there's not much going on up in the top. I do like the little info box on top, and the art is a lot better. |

Hourglass or time wheel, I don't particularly mind either way, both are interesting ideas. Maybe 'hourglass' just sounds more mystical somehow, but the time wheel seems more innovative... I like the new design though, I wasn't a big fan of the white floating bubbles and prefer the menu, despite the slightly lonely-looking corner there when the action-menu-type-thing isn't there. Maybe a border around it or something would help, I don't know. But I do miss the eyes opening and closing on their turns, I loved that idea. And although the flashing sprite would make it easy to identify whose turn it is, I feel like that might get a little irritating after a while on a computer screen. I've only ever seen it that way on small portable gaming systems so I can't be certain though. But YAY FOR MORE UPDATES!!

In my opinion, there needs to be a third layout. I like some aspects of the first one, and some of the other. The second one looks more professional and I love the command menu, but its missing something, Im not sure what though. It seems to show more color at once and I do like that. I also like the first one a lot because of the eye thing and it just looks good, but the command menu just seems like it was done in a hurry, thus it looks incomplete. It looks too blank at the top. Honestly though, can't you just have it so that you can go in the game options and choose the layout yourself?

Once the command menu has the detail it needs then I think the second(current?) battle menu will be truly a great thing. As for the eye thing I ended up liking it better when you can see all their eyes open and close up. It just looks better. Although I do have to mention that options are always a good thing. As long as you don't throw so many options out there that it confuses people. But then that is a story for another time.

When I have the time I will be finalizing a battle layout that everyone likes. For sure, their portraits will have the eye opening/closing feature. It would way too time consuming to program multiple working layouts. I'm sure we can all agree on something. |
