Okay, so, aside from Venus, each Guardian Soldier has a very distinct element: Mercury is water, Mars is fire, while Jupiter is electricity. During transformation, Mercury nearly drowns in water, and Jupiter has her boots and gloves appear from lightning. Mars' sequence, meanwhile, has no fire (excluding the end- there is some in the background). All of her equipment appears through light tricks or a burst of rose petals. Does anyone have any kind of guess as to why this is? I was watching the sequences and it kind of stumped me... Not like she has any flower based attacks like Jupiter. |

Aren't they cherry blossoms, not rose petals? The only explanation I can think of is that they based it on the manga artwork image of Rei surrounded by cherry blossoms. Maybe they're related to fire somehow? |

I think the transformation was supposed to reflect the other aspect of Sailor Mars besides her material element. She is the Senshi of Flame and Passion after all. I'm also pretty sure that they are rose petals. Sakura blossoms are not red. |

Flame, it seems possibly, but not likely, since they don't do anything like that with the girls transformation, and it seems a little odd to center in on her like that. Though granted, she did seem to get the bulk of the show's character development. |

Honestly it was the only thing I could come up with that made any sense. |

From a practical perspective, it was probably just too hard to use fire... or maybe they didn't want to freak out/inspire kids by her being enveloped in fire... But I agree that it fits with her shrine maiden and passion images, whatever the flower... |

Isn't Venus' element metal? (Besides beauty) Given the dual elements of Jupiter as Wood and Electricity, it seems like it sort of references the Chinese elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water). Except we've got no Earth scout, unless we take it as a pun towards the planet Earth, and thus, the Moon. Anyways, on the topic of Mars, I'm gonna agree on the 'passion' thought. |

In the manga, Venus' element is more heavily focused on metal, yes, but in this incarnation (and most others) her attacks are more heavily focused on intensely-focused energy. Even in the anime her love-me chain was formed from energy. It may be possible that they didn't want to scare the kids through the use of fire, but frankly, Japan has put so much worse on their children's TV. If anyone's seen the first episode of Magiranger for example, the white ranger is killed in a series of sparks and agonized screams. Hell, it scared ME. Linking the roses to passion seems more likely, but it seems like it'd be easy to at least put a little flame when she zaps her shoes on. |

^ And as we see here, in the anime she was engulfed in fire on a regular basis. |

Maybe they didn't have anyone in their team that could make fire look passable? We know they didn't have the best CG.... And that's why the last part when they do show fire it's like a video of fire instead lol |

yeah, that fire video was so funny.... But is definitely love & metal... Not sure about beauty, I think it's more of a subclause...But you're right about that lack of Earth... I guess I never thought of it before! relates to earth... at least with old asian elements... (as in, each planet had one back then... though they were known as stars...) (and does it fit with her surname?), and that's why she doesn't fit in with the other outers' names... (Heaven, Sea and... Gah! I'm rusty. Life/destiny/dark? Maybe the abyss...) And that is probably the weirdest-to-pull-off element... Saturn = Earth... since I think she switched Pluto and Saturn's mythological roots... Giving Chronos(sp?)/Saturn's time element to Pluto and Pluto/Hades' death element to Saturn...Which really confused things D;.... But anyway, so I guess that answer is Saturn = Earth... however convoluted it may be... |

But when Sailor Mars awakens, and when she uses her stronger power after that, it's a lot of CGI fire. All of Mars's attacks have some sort of fire in them, and Mars is the Soldier of Passion and Flame. Passion is often equated with rose petals, so I can see why that was used. I also think Mars was the only one they really used that with because she was the only girl it could have worked with, besides Venus's "love and beauty". Mercury, for example, is "Water and Wisdom". How could wisdom have been represented? Or, "thunder and courage". Lighting is used in Jupiter's transformaton, but there isn't really a symbol of courage that could have worked. So. I said a mouthful. :P

Come to think of it, I've never noticed the absence of fire in her transformation before. Good eye for the obvious-but-overlooked! |
