Manga Hotaru's Age

I realize Hotaru is young....but the manga was first released in 92, right? Her birthday is listed as 199X. I'm thinking the manga Infinity Arc couldn't have been released more than three or four years after that. So...wouldn't that make Hotaru REALLY young? I mean, at the earliset she would have been born in 1990. At the most she'd be four or five. She looks older than that, the same age as Chibi-Moon in the arc....who I put at five or six at the youngest....

*is really confused at Hotaru's age*

EDIT

Yes, I realize Chibi-Usa is just under a millenium old. I'm talking her age by appearance, not chronologically.

I don't think noone really knows the official reason why Chibi-Usa was ever so young in appearance. In the Silver Millinnium, people grow normally until early/late twenties and then stop aging or age extremely slowly.

Hotaru was pretty young, I know, and I would say her age was definitely preteen in appearance, but I think part of her development was in turn due to (manga) the cybernetic implants in combination with Misstress 9's possession.

Im my most humble opinion, of course.

That's actually an amazingly good explanation. Better than anything I could come up with, that's for sure.

I can buy that it was the cybernetics that caused her to appear older. As for Chibi-Usa, my interpertation is due to the influence of the silver crystal combined with the power inherent in Crystal Tokyo. Those who carry it (whatever form) can not mature until they are capable of wielding some form of its power. So it did not allow Chibi-Usa to mature until she would be capable of wielding its power a.k.a. transforming.

Why didn't it effect Usagi that way? Two reasons. One, the magic of the moon was not saturated into the ground of Japan in the 20th century, while it was the key reason for the peace in the 30th century. Two, Usagi had the strength of heart to transform, even if she was a crybaby. While Chibi-Usa did not possess the strength of heart until she awakened as Sailor Chibi Moon.

The silver crystal seems to draw its power from the strength of ones heart. Since Usagi had a strong heart even before becoming Sailor Moon, even though it needed development, she was able to mature. Chibi-Usa's heart was weak, and the Death Phantom's powers fed off of weak hearts in the fashion the silver crystal is empowered by strong hearts. That's why she was able to be turned into Black Lady by the powers of the Death Phantom. So the strong heart powerd silver crystal did not allow her to grow, due to a sort of symbiotic relationship if you will.

I hope I made some degree of sense with this explanation. I think it fits with the theme of love and strong hearts carried throughout Sailor Moon.

I think it was explained (About Chibiusa) that she didn't grow up because she hadn't matured as a Soldier. I forget the specifics but it's something like that... You'll notice that in SuperS and Stars Chibiusa actually gets taller as time goes on. In the manga I know, not sure about the anime.

The anime never touched upon the age thing. Remember, it wasn't as deep as the manga. Not nearly as serious, obsessed with good vs. evil, and there as a comic relief.

Hotarus age is actually plainly stated in the manga. In a certain chapter, mamoru is hacking into the infity school/labs database to research proffessor. Tomoe. In the process he get some facts about the accident in the lab four years ago, when hotarus mom aged 30-something and hotaru, age 8 by the time is mentioned, mother dead in the explosion and hotaru in critical condition. so, 8+4 = 12. There's no dening it, that is, if the english translation didn't randomely state years (four years ago, 8 years old) but that's quite unlikely.

In the infinity arc/ S season, Hotaru is 12 years old. In the Dream arc (stars arc/season in the anime) she is actually about 6 months old, but has grown physically and mentally to her former self pre-rebirth at end of infinity arc.

So...she's old enough to be cute and have a romantic crush. She's also old enough to be cute when pissed off.

I try not to think too much about their actual age actually. I'll say one thing though if she looks anything like she did as Mistress 9 when she reaches adult hood then SCORE!

........

Same goes for Chibiusa.

Yeah that what I'm talking about! Her hair might be short still though.

Look at all that hair! Dang. You could strangle a person with that hair.

And I think she tries, at a few points in the manga...
