BATTLE SYSTEM MOCKUP!; Opinions needed!

Okay, this is a very rough mock-up, but I want to see how everyone likes what I have planned.

Posted Image

(I don't have access to all my graphics right now so there's a lot that's just fillers. Such as, the background, and the fact that Jupiter's sprite appears twice, once as Mars. The windows will be more complicated, not simple colors. The Command Window icons (the ones appearing around Sailor Moon) are just fillers.)

OK, so basically the battle system will be active time. Each party member has a bar that fills based on their speed. (The "---" parts will be replaced with an actual bar) When their bar fills, 4 commands appear around their head. The player can choose Attack by pressing up, Tech by pressing right, Combo by pressing down, and Item by pressing left. By pressing a certain button and holding it, the player will be able to escape. The top bar is a help bar. It tells you what Techs do when selected in the menu, what items do when selected in the menu, and displays tech and magic names when they're cast.

Enemies will be able to attack you while you're choosing commands. If more than one party member has a full bar, then you can toggle between them by pressing L and R.

Attack and Item are self-explanatory. Tech allows you to use special moves and magic. Combo of course allows you to do double and group techs as seen in Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon: Another Story.

Woooah.
I have absolutely no complaints - I LOVE it!
Thanks for posting! :]
Every time we get new updates, I get sudden bursts of excitement for the first installment!

AWESOME battle system, even if it's not completely final!

I think you got pretty much everything covered. I'm quite happy we can get our butts kicked while sitting waiting to make a choice, cause that way it'll feel like a real battle and that was my only issue with another story, the whole waiting and choosing was just too easy.

I like the options. So yeah over all.

Though quick question. Are the battles sprites getting ehance with the new sprites like with the walking ones?

Yes, they'll be taller and wider just like the other sprites. ^^

I think I did it to most of the ones on the mock-up, but they're hard to see.

Yeah, the only who's more visible is Jupiter. But yeah, I think this will rock. I like the set up a lot. And the face sets for it are quite pretty.

Glad you like the face sets. ^^ Jeanine really outdid her self with them. They're a very small sample of the complete status portraits for the status part of the menu.

And I'm glad you like the setup, I think it'll be pretty nice once everything is finalized.

I think Jupiter's close up is a bit weird. Maybe you can change it =)

Jupiter won't be posing like that as her static battle pose, as I said, I had limited resources when I made the mockup. ^^;

finally! this is awesome!

I have a question though. Will we be able to pause during a battle? That's the only reason I dislike the Active Battle System, that you can't leave the game while in a battle. And I like being able to leave when I need to. I mean... when you gatta go... you gatta go... LunaDown

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM TIEM. I'll try to go into as much detail as I can.

My biggest issue is mainly with the party status section. IMO it fills up twice as much screen as it should. The portraits, while nice to look at, don't really need to be there, and the font is kind of large and unelegant, though I probably don't need to point this out. Larger fonts are better for larger screens however, so if someone happens to be playing this on their TV [like I would be], then maybe a font size option for the game would be appropriate.

A neat idea would be to only show the portrait of the party member who is currently selected and about to perform an attack or some other function, allowing the player a quicker recognition of who it is they are controlling at the moment.

You already have a turn meter planned, but some small meters and bars also measuring the HP and MP would show the player what is going on more quickly, and give a better representation of party status than reading large numbers like that. Perhaps have the meters, and then the amount of HP or MP beside it. So the menu would look something like "HP 1455[======---]"... hopefully that will get my point across better :P

Also, while the diamond-shaped action buttons might work well on a control pad, like a SNES controller, there's no real representation for something like that, also hopefully you will shrink those a bit to let us see what the scouts are doing. Once again, screen economy! :) Maybe even move those things into a horizontal, rectangular 4-button menu beside the portrait of the party member that is attacking?

Hope these suggestions help :)

The character portraits do look fantastic. Though it does overall take up a lot of the screen- a little too much.

Also, I'm not fond of the idea of having to press up, down (etc) to select what I want to do. I'd prefer if you could scroll through the options with say, left or right, and hit a button to select that particular command.

Well, the fonts aren't finalized by any means.

The party status part of the menu is so big because by default, that's how much room that part of the interface is supposed to take up. I personally think there's plenty of room---the help bar at the top will only appear when it's needed, otherwise it's not there.

I was already considering the bars. But, having bars for HP and MP as well is a little too standard for RPG Maker XP games. I see it a lot and I don't think it's really neccessary. We can try it out and see how it looks, though. ^^

Only having their portrait appear when you have them selected isn't a bad idea. I could have the options in rectangular squares above their status portrait as well, that way nothing takes any room on the battlefield, and you can scroll through them by pressing left and right... I'll work on a mockup of it.

I agree the portraits, while fantastic, are big and take up a lot of room. The system seems complicated, but that's just because I'm not much of a gamer. So the senshi's head is the middle of the icons, which means Moon is active right now? That seems understandable. I also agree the font is boring.

But I think it looks cool nonetheless! I'm so glad you're still working on the game, and I can't wait to play it!
