News on the game release!; Game will be released by story arc

That's right, the game will be released by story arc instead of a full game. Now, let me make a few things clear.

With each new release, the game will have the current story arc and the previous story arcs in it. Meaning if you haven't played the first story arc and you download the second, you will have to go through the first story arc that will be included.

The releases will NOT be demos, they will be final and no changes will be made after their release.

I'm not sure if I'm going to couple the Stars Arc with the Final arc yet or not, I still have yet to decide that.

There are also no release dates at this time.

That is all. Hope this pleases you guys. ^^ The point of doing things this way is to keep up the hype and to show people what I'm capable of, as well as the hope of getting new team members to lighten the load for the rest of us as far as graphics are concerned.

The only mainstream games I know that do this at all are Half-Life 2 and SiN Episodes. I've seen a lot of amateur/indie RPG projects throw this exact same idea around, but nobody's ever figured out how to do it right. All of them that I've seen or been involved in [until they died a slow and painful death] have had this thought about and discussed, for some reason. Nobody ever wants to make short games anymore :(

I guess I can see the appeal in something like that, though. RPGs like this tend to bore me easily [but I haven't played yours yet so I will not generalize your RPG for now :3], so playing it in short chapters spread through a long time might help keep me interested.

I'm kinda dissapointed at this. I was hoping for one big game. And what i like to know is....

Will stats, levels, attacks, etc...transfer to the later arcs? For example...I reached a high level in the first arc....so will that transfer to the 2nd arc to contuine leveling it?

The game arcs will in no way be short, that's another reason why I'm dividing it into parts. Each story arc should amount to a good 15+ hours or so, though that's just a rough estimate.

Yes game stats will carry over.

Assuming your still on the 1st arc right now....how will it be released? Are you gonna release it while development on the other arcs contuines?

I'm a little bummed out about this idea, although it will be extremely fun to play the game, it's just not a fun feeling to play it and to be left at a cliff hanger and then wait for another long period of time before playing again....to me, one big swoop would be best, another game is already doing the release one part, play, wait, play, wait, play and its not fun, I've lost interest, especially since my game data was lost when my computer shut down in a power lost...lol

If you don't want to download it piece by piece, then wait until the Stars arc is released and download it then.

Personally, I think that this is a great idea.

i thought you said that you'd have to do the arc over once the next arc is released... but if your stats carry over that doesn't make much sense... maybe i misunderstood the question... unless you were saying that in the later releases (post first arc) with more than one arc already in the game, then those stats would be kept... but not stats from the first arcs release to the second arcs release which also has the first arc......

okay... idk, maybe i'm talking in circles... oh well...

I'm just glad that this hopefully means we don't have to wait the whole year and a half till Dec 2008 for the aproximated release date if it's going arc by arc... =]

The jury is out on me on this idea. Though I think the game should be released altogether....I'll accept this idea if the arcs are long enough to give me like 12-14 hours of gameplay.

left at a cliff hanger and then wait for another long period of time before playing again.

That's how a lot of us watch anime or read manga, actually! Either by waiting for the new fansub or the next DVD/volume. So it's only a foreign concept if you don't follow TV shows or comics. The same should work for videogames.

I dunno if the character stats necessarily need to carry over. I would be fine with just having all the techniques one would have learned for the previous episode, with each "arc" being slightly more difficult than the last. Forcing a player to play the episodes in order is a really silly idea and an unnecessary step to take, since we're all going to play it chronologically anyway. Though actually, you're suggesting that the new arcs be added like a patch, so why not do it your way then? Same release style as Minerva [a HL2 mod].

The way RPG Maker XP works is its easy to carry over stats and whatnot to a different release of a game. There won't be any patches or whatever, it will be a seperate download, you would just have to take your save file from the first release folder and place it in the second.

The releases are being made so that if you would like to play the game as it's released, you can. If you'd rather wait until its completely done, you can do that as well. Each time the game is released in a new story arc, it includes the current story arc and the previous ones.

It doesn't make sense to make it where you can play the second story arc before you play the first, because the story is original enough to where if you haven't played them in order, then you would be lost with certain plot elements.

It also wouldn't make sense to have to start stats over because its not fair to players who worked hard to get stats up.

The main reason I'm doing this is because I need staff members. I can't do everything alone. By showing that I'm serious and am capable of making something amazing, more people will be willing to help.

I understand that, but I'm talking about the game here, the game isn't going to be released every week/month you know like manga/anime would be! It's going to take much longer than that from what I understand.

Either way, I think there should be a code to let you resume any arc at a basic-standardize level/stats should you lose your original save file. As I mentioned that happened to me, and I really just not interested in replaying all the way back to where I left of, it might be helpful to have that for some players who might experience the same!

I don't really see what the problem is, if you don't want to play the game in parts, just don't. I'm doing this so both sides will be happy, and you all should respect my decision.

Something like a code to get base stats in an arc could be implemented, that's very possible. Though, the reason why I have saves connecting is because there will be a lot of optional things you can get that are only available in the current arc, which wouldn't be included in the code.

Precisely. I don't see why everyone is up in arms when they can play the whole game once it's completed.

As I said....I'm holding out judgement until I know if these arcs are very long in gameplay.
