There is no need in me telling you what happened... We all remember it far too well... I guess what surprises me the most about the whole situation is not Benoit's actions themselves, but the reactions to them. I mean, before the events, Chris Benoit was regarded as one of the best wrestlers, and most admired and respected... Afterwords, his name isn't even mentioned, and when it is, it is in disgust. Now, when I speak on this, I don't include the rest of the world in my discussion... They don't understand this business and how it works, and therefore they couldn't possibly understand what we will be discussing here. But INSIDE of this business, it is a shock to me how some people have been so quick to get on the "Benoit Hate Wagon" Consider this: Did Benoit's actions in his final days really downplay his status within this business? I mean sure, it may have really dropped the rate he gets booked, but does he REALLY have to worry about that? What I am talking about, is people have totally disregarded his contributions to this business scince his death. I'm sorry, but just because the man murdered his wife and son, and then took his own life, doesn't mean that the things that he did for this business were beyond monumental... He brought the Japaniese style to America. He came over to America, ECW in particular, and wrestled a style that was really foreign in this country. And he inspired a generation of workers with that style. He was the first wrestler to make it to the top of this business based on his sheer ability. Look at the big names of the past 20 years... Harley Race, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, Steve Austin, Triple H, The Rock, Shawn Michaels, Kurt Angle, John Cena... All have been either great gimmicks and poor wrestlers, or great wrestlers with great gimmicks that worked strongly together to get them over. Benoit was not in either of those classes. Benoit's gimmick WAS his in ring work. All there was to Benoit was what we saw in the ring. I don't condone the actions of Benoit, but I don't think he is a complete waste for them either... The man is only human, and humans are primitive animals when it gets right down to it... When the human brain enters a certain state, bad things happen. It could happen to any of us at any time for any reason. So I refuse to jump on the anti-Benoit party. I still think he is as great as I have always thought he was. Sure, his last few days are nothing to marvel at, but that didn't affect his effects on this business one bit. As an aspiring wrestler myself, I STILL look to Benoit as one of my biggest inspirations in this business. He proved that you don't have to be the biggest and most charasmatic wrestler on the show to be the best. He brought a pure athleticism to the sport in this country, and he was always one to give 110% every night he was on the card... I think we all need to learn to let his last 3 days go, and look at the 20 years before that and what he accomplished with them when we think of Chris Benoit... |
