Section 1: The Making of a Swordmaster

Chapter 1: The Law of Tooth and Club

A house is on fire and if you were to look in a little room you can see a woman in bed and a terrified little boy holding on to her and crying. The room around them is crumbling and you can hear a man calling out to them. The little boy stops crying for a second to call back to the man. The man hears them and rushes through the door just as the roof starts falling in. The boy pats the woman’s face trying to get her attention as the man scoops him up and starts to reach for the woman too when the roof completely gives way and the man is forced to retreat, holding the little boy.

~~~~~4 years later~~~~~~~
In another house you can see the same little boy talking to the same man. If you were to put your ear to the window you could hear what he’s saying.
“Father when will mommy come back??” asked the little boy
The man sighed and sat down picking up the boy and setting him on his knee, “I don’t know son.”
“Why did my mommy leave??”
“She left because she was sick. Don’t you remember? She was very sick and couldn’t get out of bed; I left to send for the doctor…”
“So you gave her to the doctor and when she’s all better she’ll come back.”
“That’s right son.”
“Why can’t I go visit her at the doctor daddy??”
“Because the doctor said she can’t have visitors--now go get ready for school.”
Today is the boy’s first day at school and he walks down the lane to the school. When he gets there he sets about finding the principal so he can give him his papers. He spots a boy and walks over.
“Can you tell me where the principal’s office is please?? He asks sweetly.
“Sure kid, down the hall and to the left, first door on your right.” The older boy answers.
The little boy thanks him and walks away following the directions he was given and arrives in front of a door with a little blue sign on it. He walks in only to find out from one of the boys that it’s the bathroom and that the principal’s office is actually the 3rd door down across the hall. He walks in and sees a man sitting at the table and a sign on the desk with the word “principal” on it.
The boy addresses himself to the man, “Excuse me sir, is this the principal’s office??”
“Yes it is, who sent you and what have you done??”
“My daddy sent me sir. I walked to school, found the boys room, and then came here. Dad said to give you these.” The little boy handed the Principal some papers.
The man read the papers and then looked at the little boy. The principal observed that the boy had black hair and eyes and a deep tan. He also noticed that he was very healthy and bright so that he would probably do well at the school.
“Your room is the first door on the left 5th hall to the right.” The principal got up to open the door for the little boy and the little boy saw a sword hanging at his side.
“What is that sir??”
“Your teacher will tell you all about it, now off you go.”
The little boy headed down the hall to his school room. He opened the door and walked in. The man at the blackboard turned around he too had a sword at his side.
“You must be the new student we’re expecting.” he said, “Your desk is over their next to Orem’s” The man pointed at a desk in the back, and the little boy walked over to it and sat down. “My name is Teacher Sorek. You will raise your hand when you want to talk. Ok??”
“Yes sir.” The boy said. A bell rang shrilly from somewhere and a noisy crowd of boys filed in. The teacher rapped on his desk as everyone sat down.
“Class, today we have a new student.” he motioned for the little boy to stand up and come forward,” Will you introduce yourself to the class please??”
The little boy nodded, “My name is Lelak Morgrith Korin. I am 6 winters old, I can count to 10 and say the alphabet, and I would like to know what that thing that Teacher Sorek is wearing is.”
“Very good Lelak, you may sit down. The thing I am wearing is called a sword, and you will all get one when you are older.”
Lelak sat back down next to Orem. The rest of the school day was rather uneventful until Lelak crossed the school yard on his way home with some new friends. 4 large boys approached them. All of Lelak’s friends ran away screaming at him to run too and mentioning something about the ten winter boys leaving the little boy all by himself. Lelak kept walking. One of the boys picked him up by the back of his shirt.
“Well look what we have here Gorgin.” said the first boy
“He must be new here if he doesn’t know what’s good for him.” answered Gorgin
Lelak noticed that they all had swords. “Could you put me down now please?” he requested.
The boys laughed a nasty sort of laugh and the first one dropped him. “Do you know who we are twit??”
“No, and my name is Lelak.” He started to walk off.
The first boy dragged him back. “Shall I tell him boys??”
“Yeah.” They all answered.
“We are the Bruisers and your on our turf. You just walked away from us. Nobody does that without paying the toll first. I’m Kreg, he’s Gorgin, he’s Yohar, and he’s Rok. You will do what we say or be hurt, got it??” He said speaking in Lelak’s face. Then he dropped him. Lelak shrugged and walked off.
Kreg dragged him back…
~~~~~30 min later~~~~

Lelak walked home barely recognizable. He was all dirty, both his eyes were black, he was covered in cuts and scrapes ,he had a swollen lip, and he was very calm in a stunned sort of way. He got to the front step, sat down and started to cry. His father came out, picked him up and carried him inside while Lelak told him the whole story. From that day on Lelak was taught at home.

CHapter 2: The Destroyers

~~~~~14 winters later~~~~~~
If you were to look for the little boy that you saw 14 winters ago you would not find him. Instead you would find a grown man. In the past 14 winters, he has grown tall and strong, his fiancée left him for someone else, his friends have deserted him and he has learned that his father has deceived him about his mother’s fate. Lelak has earned his sword and has become a fine duelist. All this has developed in him the character traits he will need if he is to overcome his adventures and succeed in Goth Ida. Lelak is now walking down the road to the far side of town reading a new Order written by the Counsel, and wondering over it. It was not like the Counsel to make new Orders so frequently; this being the third Order to be issued in a month. Lelak sighs and puts it in the left pocket of his black pants when all of a sudden someone was pushed in front of him. It was a little girl, about 7 or 8 winters. She was crying and holding her knee. Lelak stooped to pick her up and then take her to a fountain nearby and wash her knee in it. He then put her down and started to walk off. The little girl followed quietly and it was a little while till Lelak realized that she was behind him. He stopped and turned around. The little girl stopped too and waited.
“Let’s get you back to your family.” He said taking her hand to lead her back the way they came.
“I don’t have a family”, the little girl said holding his hand.
Lelak was a little surprised by this, “How come??”
“They got dead. Something came out of nowhere and got them dead.” She said a little sadly. ”I think it’s because father did something that wasn‘t liked by the ‘Destroyers’”, She whispered the last word and looked around fearfully. “All the grownups are scared of them…Are you scared of them too??”
Lelak had never heard of the “Destroyers” and so he couldn’t very well be afraid of them. He shook his head. “They come at night and kill people that know too much or don‘t do what they want…I’m afraid they’ll kill me.”, again she looked around fearfully,” course I haven’t mastered the bow yet…” The two walked back to the village in silence as Lelak thought all this over. He would have to see for himself. “Are you going to leave in the village??” asked the little girl. Lelak shook his head. “Then why are we going back to the village??” the girl looked up at him.
“To find out more.” Lelak responded
“About what??” Asked the girl
“The Destroyers.”
The girl’s eyes opened wide, “how come??”
Lelak sighed,”…Too many reasons why…”
The girl nodded though she didn’t understand. “What’s your name??”
“Lelak Korin.”
“Mine’s Farah.”
“…nice to meet you Farah.”
Lelak stopped in front of an Inn and paid for a room. That night they slept. About dawn Lelak heard a shuffle in the room. He opened his eyes; someone was peering through the window. He slowly moved his had towards the sword on the floor. It was hidden so that anyone who was not where he was would not be able to see the sword. Lelak grabbed it and sprang for the window in a second. The man was ready for him though and had vanished before Lelak had reached the window. Lelak sheathed his sword and slipped on his shirt. He looked at Farah, she was still sleeping… Perhaps he could find a trace of the man at the window. He went outside and looked at the wall. He could see the path the man had taken up the ivy, because that’s where most of the branches were missing or disturbed. He climbed up there and looked at the window ledge. Finding nothing he hopped down, and scanned the dirt road. Again, nothing. He returned to his room and woke Farah. Then he started on the walk back to his house. Upon returning to the house he found his father feverishly writing down something on a piece of paper. He went into the kitchen to get something to drink, and when he returned his father had an arrow in his back and the paper was gone! Farah looked shocked and Lelak rushed over to this father to see if he couldn’t help him. He pulled the arrow out of his back, and gave him some serum to see if that would counteract the poison in his system. His father looked at him and gasped “…beware…Zetar…get…Counsel…too--”
Lelak was distraught; he went outside and buried his father. Then he locked himself up in his room the rest of the day. When he came out Farah could tell he’d been crying. She sat him down and made him something to eat. And then she told him what she had done all day.
“I went and looked outside…No footmarks or nothing…just vanished…Then I put flowers on your daddy’s grave and in a vase on the table…after that I played with the neighbor’s cow. She didn’t like being milked very much… Oh! I found this too. Isn’t it pretty??” she handed the object to him.
Lelak ate his sandwich and listened half heartedly to her story till she showed him what she’d found. He nodded and turned it over in his hand. It was circular and looked like it was made of 3 different parts. It was red and had little designs etched into it and in the center was a symbol. The symbol consisted of a griffin with 2 torches crossed over it and a sword going through the torches. It had a fastener on the back of it, so Lelak pinned it onto Farah. She smiled and then her face became puzzled do you think the bad man left it?? , She asked. Lelak nodded gravely. “Will he kill me if I wear it??” her voice became a little frightened. Lelak shook his head. Right now they needed to go to sleep.
Chapter 3: The adventure begins
That night Lelak felt something sitting heavily on his chest. He opened his eyes and gave a start. He was staring right into the masked face of his assailant who raised his knife, the blade of which glistened in the moonlight. Lelak grabbed the man’s wrist and flipped him on the floor landing on him quickly to pin him down. He reached for the mans hand, slamming it repeatedly on the hard wooden floor to make the man let go of the knife. It clattered onto the floor and skidded to the far side of the room. The man reached for his sword but Lelak was too quick. He stopped the man’s hand and drew the man’s sword throwing it to the far side of the room as well. They wrestled on the floor for a while and then they started fist fighting while the man kept trying to reach his sword. After a while Lelak finally knocked him out. He reached for the man’s mask and pulled it off. The man had light blue hair and light skin, he was dressed all in black and was about 6’ 4”. Lelak heard the door open and whipped around. Farah stood there holding a lantern and looking terrified.
“Its cause I have his pretty jewel isn’t it??”, she asked.
Lelak shook his head. “They want me dead…”
“Why??” she didn’t look convinced.
Lelak shrugged. “That we will have to find out. May I borrow your pin??”
“Sure.” Farah left to go and get it. She returned a moment later holding it in her hand, the lantern light sparkling off it. Lelak thanked her and took it. He tied up the man who was coming too just then, and turned to Farah.
“You should go back to bed.”
“I can’t sleep. I’m scared.”
Lelak sighed. He was about to say something, when someone grabbed Farah from behind causing her to drop her lantern. Lelak stuffed his captive under the bed locked the window and rushed out grabbing the lantern on his way. He searched the whole neighborhood the rest of the night having not found her in the house. He returned and finding his captive still there he traded clothes with him, and put the pin on. He promised himself he would find Farah, as well as stop the Destroyers. Having learned from his captive by various means where to go, he left. He walked down an alleyway and then another, and then he went down the man hole and into the sewers. He walked for hours till he found the place he was looking for and walked in. Everybody was dressed like him. All masked and wearing black. The speaker wore a green pin, when Lelak entered he stopped speeking to address him.
“Ah Centurion Ethork how good of you to finally join us. I take it you have completed your mission??”
Lelak cleared his throat. “The target has been disposed of.”
The man next to him nudged him. “have you forgotten your manners??”, he whispered.
Lelak coughed as the speaker kept talking and shook his head.
“Then why did you not address the Grand Vizier properly when you were done speaking??”
Lelak thought quickly, “I just remembered something and I forgot to add that…”
“You were lucky that he let it slip that time.”
Lelak nodded.
The Vizier addressed a man wearing another red pin. “Have you got the girl Jordak??”
“Yes Grand Vizier. She is with the others.”
“Good.”
Lelak made a note of the discussion and wondered how long it would be before they returned to the cavern and found his prisoner. The Vizier apparently had finished his speech for now because he began assigning missions. At length he turned to Lelak.
“Ethork??”
“Yes Grand Vizier??”
“Your assigned to containment today.”
“Yes Grand Vizier.”
The man next to Lelak nudged him again. “Wow he must really like you.” Lelak nodded. “You don’t seem to talk much since you finished your job Centurion.” the man continued. “I suppose its cause you finally decided to take the masters advice and shut up a little huh??” Again Lelak nodded. “Tell me what your job is like when you get off duty ok??”
Lelak nodded. “Would you mind telling me what the Vizier is Planning I missed the meeting.”
“Later, You better go before you get whipped for dallying.”
Lelak nodded. ”remind me which way again??”
“you can’t remember??”
“That guy woke up, we had a fight before I killed him, I’m still a hair disoriented…” Lelak said quickly.
“Down the hall and to the left. You’d better pull it together.”
“Yeah. Thanks.”
Lelak walked off at a brisk pace toward the hall door when the Vizier stopped him.
“Centurion Ethork.” The Vizier said sternly.
“Yes Grand Vizier??” Lelak said. He was feeling uneasy.
“The Zetar has ordered me to give you this.” The Vizier handed Lelak a gold band. “Put it on your sword, it will enhance the ease with which you use your blade.”
Lelak wordlessly studied it and then slipped it onto his sword’s handle. His mouth hardened a little and he managed to get out the words, “Thank you Grand Vizier” His mind was seething. The gold band had been his father’s. It was one of the 4 relics of Goth Ida.
