Yes, HTML is something you should know before attempting any other web design language. http://www.w3schools.com can get you through HTML fast enough, it shouldn't take longer than an hour.

Yup, except you just made your variable null.

$var = "Now to change this.";

...Contains no integers (whole numbers), and therefore, you're variable now equals...

$var;
