Prologue: One Year

Is it not amazing how so much can happen in one year? I mean, there could be the birth of a child, a marriage, or the coronation of a king. Well, the subject of all I'm about to tell you is "One Year".

One year ago, everything was fine. The country of Hyrule was the most prosperous it had ever been. Everything was going well, with each civilization at peace with one another. But that piece did not last long. One year ago, our beloved king was murdered. The same thing happened with the Queen of the Sheikah, Hyrule's best ally. No one ever found out who murdered either of them. All that was known was that after each person was murdered, an equal took their place the next day. No, they weren't heirs. They were two different people, from foreign lands. Veran took the throne to as the Sheikah Queen, and Onox became the ruler of the Hylian Empire. In within a few months, the Hylian Army attacked every civilization, besides the Sheikah that is. Each civilization retaliated, and The Great War began. I myself, being a knight of the Hyrulian Army, was caught in the middle of everything. All I did was follow Onox's orders, and one year later, I'm tired of it. Yet I remained loyal. However, that view of loyalty changed a few days later.

Chapter 1: Arrow

We started are day early, at around 05:00. It began not at the mess hall or at the drill area, but at a battle. The night before, General Onox gave us a somewhat short lecture, saying that we would be attacking the Kokiri at their home front early the next day. As usual, the General did not give the actual reason on why we were going to battle in such a short time period. Being loyal to our leader, with the fear of what could possibly happen to us if we did disobey him, we unanimously agreed, and started to prep for battle.

Now, you may think that the Kokiri aren't skilled in battle at all. That kind of thought would get a man killed as soon as he entered their lush, green territory. The Kokiri were the best archers throughout all of Hylia, which provided great defense versus enemy infantry that were only skilled in the ways of the sword. However, the knights were equipped with plate mail, which provided a nice defense versus the skilled Archers of the Woods and the fast, but almost unarmored, Kokiri infantry. Though they had great speed, they didn't have good muscle due to their childlike bodies, which meant that they were easily overpowered unless they were in groups.

Currently, the battle was slightly in our favor. For every two Kokiri we killed, they killed one of our powerful, yet sort of sluggish men. I, myself, had slain 6 soldiers and 2 archers that day. Even though things were looking up, in truth, they weren't. All of those soldiers were just a raiding party. They were a ploy to distract us from our real challenge up ahead. All of a sudden, what looked like 40 archers came up and started firing their bows straight into the air. Only 6 arrows missed. There were many more Hylians where that came from, but everyone, including the General, was shocked. Now it came time to strike. We all ran up ahead, killing everything that dare stood in the way of our cavalry’s charge. No Kokiri behind us had all of their limbs still intact to their petite bodies. The fighting got fiercer. The field got became drenched from the blood of our troops and theirs. Dead Hylians and Kokiri started to cover every inch of the field. Then, the even that I never thought could happen had finally taken place.

One archer, dressed in green robes and armor and wore an ornate headband, who managed to escape all of the carnage, knocked an arrow into the most beautifully decorated longbow I had ever seen and aimed it straight for Onox. I, being the only one to see it, changed my horse's course to go defend the General. If it did hit the General, then surely, no matter how much I wanted him to die, we would lose this war. The arrow missed Onox, but managed to pierce through the armor I was wearing and stuck itself right in my right arm, my good arm. The pain...such agony that I never thought that a man could possibly go through. I could not continue to control my horse any moment longer. Eventually, I fell off of my saddle onto the ground, where I lay right besides a corpse of a Kokiri, who had the unfortunate experience of being stabbed in the heart. My arm was a bloody mess. Bodily fluids started pouring out faster and faster. In order to end it, I had pulled my arm away from my shield and put pressure on it. That’s when it all ended. Finding her point of opportunity to finish me off, she hastily knocked another arrow, which flew past everyone else with tremendous speed, and hit me square in the gut. The bloody arrow was the last thing I saw before I had blacked out.

Chapter 2: Revenge and Treason

It was blank. Dark for what felt like an eternity. I swore that at that moment, my life had ended on this Earth, and that I had entered eternal purgatory. However, none of what I thought took place even to the slightest degree, as I soon realized when I awoke. Everything around me, from the beds to my fellow brothers in arms, was all blurry and fuzzy. I felt like I had a hangover ten times worse than any man downing 4 pints of the most potent rum one could find. I soon realized that my arm and stomach area was all patched up with cloth, and that the bandages had a color that easily resembled blood…my blood. Then I remembered everything. The two well fired arrows, the Kokiri sniper, my steed...
I was in the medical barracks of the Hylian Militia. I couldn't believe it, not for one second. I, a cavalier, one of the most respected knights in Hyrule today, downed by 2 arrows?! Unbelievable! I just wanted to...to......

I awoke again, but this time, I was my company’s barracks. A nurse and Trevor, my only friend that I had as a little child, were at my bedside. Then, I was talked to the first time in what seemed like forever.

“Evan, Evan...Are you okay?" questioned my friend, Trevor. He’s one of Hyrule’s best cavaliers, but not the best. That could only be reserved for one man, my tutor, the only paladin of Hyrule’s army. His skills…now they were legendary.

”Hmm…I still don’t feel that good,” I moaned, my muscles were still in pain from the battle, despite some parts still being numb.

“Oh…well, I do wish you good health,” sighed Trevor. Over the past month, hearing him speak was the most sincere that anyone has done.

”Whatever, I'm gonna go see Onox…” Slowly, I made my way out of the bed. I did not care about the pain that I had suffered. Only one word repeated through my mind “Regicide…Regicide…

”Don't...” Trevor abruptly stood up, extending his hand to call me back and ask me to rest back down on my small, uncomfortable cot.

But it was too late. I was gone. Gone to get my revenge. Not on the Kokiri, but Onox, the person who I now knew murdered our fair king, Theodore III.

About 15 Min. Later, after a heck of a lot of hobbling, staggering, and pain, I was at the Grand Hall. Such beauty, such elegance in one room was not seen in any other hall in Hylia. But this elegance was way too much to give to a General who wasn't crooked, wasn’t the perpetrator of the horrendous crimes of treason and regicide. Yet, I couldn't speak my mind for this matter, for I would be executed within moments. Eventually, I arrived at the General's Quarters, which used to be the royal bedroom.

”Permission to enter!” I yelled outside the door. The blasted general didn’t want to take any chance. All army personnel had to say that, just to make sure an assassin wasn’t coming in to kill the old fool.

“Permission granted!” That voice…the voice of a killer. There was no emotion in what he spoke.

”General, I have a request, to do a reconnaissance mission.” He seemed too stupid not to fall for it…his mouth showed it all.

”Why?” inquired the oaf.

”I wish to seek revenge from what happened in Kokiri Forest, and to help Hyrule win the war!” He was buying it…I hope.

”Excellent idea. Heck, you can start tomorrow!”

”May I have my steed prepared?” I asked.

“...”

“Wait, what's going on?!” I was worried, I was afraid about what had happened.

”Your horse, she was kidnapped by the Kokiri.”

”...” Blasted forest creatures, didn’t they ruin my life enough?!

”Well, go on and get ready.” commanded the idiot. “You must leave before 12:00 tomorrow!”

“Yes sir!”

Pheh! What a buffoon! I always heard Onox was...dim-witted. But my horse, there was another reason for me to do what I did! Get back the one friend I had from in battle!
But no, that's not my main reason. Even though it may be treason, I WILL get my revenge on the General for whom I've sacrificed so much for so little! No matter what, HE WILL PAY FOR DESTROYING OUT LIVES!

Chapter 3: Suit up...and Head Out!

I was getting my gear ready that night after I talked to the General. After I had lost consciousness, it seems that all of my weaponry, armor, and even my horse, had vanished into the air. The Kokiri took everything I had. My armor, my horse, even the sword off my back. I lost it all. I only had an old, cheap sword, probably made out of wood, most likely oak. A nimble blade, but not powerful enough to cut through the thick bronze armor that was possessed by Onox, or any other soldier I may face in that fact. I also had 100 rupees, and that was only my last paycheck. It seems that Onox even charged soldiers who got injured during battle…cheap buffoon. Too bad it was only enough for a shield and some supplies. As I walked out to go into the Market, I noticed how things have changed since Onox arrived. The buildings changed from their former Victorian style design to those that should be condemned. Mold and other material had taken over the walls of the area I formerly called my home, before I joined the Hylian military that is. The cobblestones had glass and blood stains on every corner. The smell or corpses also filled the air with an unpleasant stench…this wasn’t the Hyrule I know. This town had turned into one gigantic slum…

There were more bar fights than I ever heard possible in my life. Soldiers were rampant, both Hylians and Sheikah, doing whatever they wanted, looting, vandalism, grand theft carriage, only to name a few. If I had my equipment back, I'd fight them to make sure they stopped. But right now...I'd be torn to shreds with only a wooden sword and not even leather mail to help me have a cushion against the swipes of a sharpened blade. I had to watch everything happen. If only they knew...

No, they wouldn't care and I shouldn't. What's past is past. Even though I wish, I can't redo my life and change what I think is wrong. Tis sad for me, but I have to go on. My only goal is to end this madness, even if it takes me 1000 years, even if I die, I will end this! Thoughts aside, I came to the bazaar. With my military discount, I wanted to purchase a Hylian Shield. However, in the end, I just got mad.

”Could I have a standard issue Hylian Guard shield, sir?” I showed the shopkeep my military ID.

He looked it over, making sure it wasn’t a fake, as many citizens have tried, and succeeded. “Very well sir. That would be 90 rupees, no I.O.Us or any of that crap.”

”Are you SERIOUS? They only cost 80 without the discount!”

”Onox just raised the price to 100 rupees for them. Where the heck have you been? I can give you a wooden shield for 80 rupees, though. Now pay up, or leave, knight! I have business to attend to!”

”Fine, I guess there’s nothing else I can do.” Reluctantly, I took out my wallet and gave him 2 purple rupees. In return, he gave me a bill, not the regular rupee crystal. On it was stamped Onox’s ugly head. Seeing this figure of disgust, I took my shield and left the military supply bazaar immediately.

I missed a lot when I was out cold. They said prices changed last week due to Onox's orders, so he could fund the war even more and help out the non-existent, yet somehow in the eyes of the citizens, justified cause. A petty thing to be mad at, but it was still something. My time at the food area was a lot easier, but left me with 2 rupees. I went back home, packed up, and took one final rest.

I left the next day at 08:00. I took one good, long, final look at Hyrule before embarking on my journey, seeing as that could be my last. I then took a stop at Hylian Field into an all-familiar territory to me. It was an area between the ruins of Lon Lon Ranch and Zora’s Domain, an area we Hylians know as Blood Valley. Easily recognized throughout all of Hyrule, Blood Valley is the sight of the Battle of the Drifting Plain. The Hylians and the Shiekah went against the Kokiri and the Zora. The battle lasted what seemed like many weeks, but it was all over in 4 days. Not a known Hylian was left alive. I was lucky to be sick…or I’m sure my quest would never have even started. In the end, only one soldier, a lone Zoran mercenary, was left alive from that battle, and not much else is known. I quickly ran from the area, fearing that I’d run into a Redead or a ghost. Soon, I arrived at my destination, the forest. This was perhaps my most important step. If I cannot make allies with both the Deku and the Kokiri, then I have no reason to continue.

Chapter 4: Wishes of the Woods

I knew from the start of my journey that this would never be easy. No, not that Veran or Onox would figure it out; it's because of the forest's hostility toward the Hylians after our last battle with the Kokiri. However, I had one chance. I could not start with getting allies with the Kokiri. If I did…well, the same thing that happened during the battle beforehand would probably occur…but I cannot quite say that I’ll return. I had to make up with their closest ally, the Deku. Do not let their small bodies fool you. They can shoot seeds and bubbles out of their snout at an incredible velocity. Plus, they have a HUGE advantage. They are the only civilization in the whole continent of Hylia that can go airborne naturally, without the use of any type of levitating magic. If I have this power on my side, fighting for my cause of liberation, then I can be easily assured that I will at least have a small chance that my victory will be guaranteed.

The Deku settlement is more of a colonized state. Its true capital was located in the woods of Termina. However, some mysterious force coming from the other side prevented anything from going through that gate, so trade and immigration to Hylia has been relatively slow.

The settlement seemed very ancient to what buildings are like in Hyrule. Simple huts made out of sticks filled the entire plain. The shops? They were just even larger huts. The village was the simplest of any settlement made by an intelligent creature I’ve ever seen. Well, except for the palace. The palace was the most beautiful architectural structure I have ever seen, second only to the Castle Castille, the true name of Hyrule Castle. Ornate designs, whether it was the Triforce, statues, paintings, etc, all forms of art were viewable, and that was only on the Palace Grounds

I snuck into the village, hiding behind rocks, trees, huts, whatever I could find. But, there was no one outside. No, I couldn't take a risk. I must stay sneaky. Eventually, I was starting to close in on the Emperor’s Palace. And that was as far as I got, before...

”Put your hands up now!!!!”

I was surrounded by Deku, probably Palace Guards. They didn't take any chances.

”Wwwwait, I...” As what I thought would happen, I started to stutter in true fear.

”Silence! You're coming with us.”

I decided to cooperate. If I fought them off, the Kokiri would definitely come to help them, and I wouldn't survive, not without my chain mail armor. The guards led me to the palace's dungeons. They would either:
1. Keep me here as a POW.
2. Execute me.
3. Send me to Onox to be executed.

None of them are something I'd wish for, but I'd rather stay as a POW. However, none of those possible situations came true. In fact, I was only down in the dungeon for about an hour. They led me up, but this time, to the Royal Chamber. There, the king, in all of his wooden glory, was sitting on a nice-sized chair. Guards surrounded all possible exits, including the windows. Surrounding all of them was many paintings by famous Terminian artists. This still doesn't make sense. Why was I called to the stand?

”State your name.”

”Evan...Evan Harkinian.”

Heh, I could tell it. He knew my name. So did everyone else. They say I used to be loved and adored, but after this war started, I lost that so called “good” reputation and became hated by all, even my own people. All of this because of Onox’s actions…because I was a Hylian cavalier.

”Hmm, you look like you're a member of the Hylian Army; correct me if I'm wrong.” He slowly paced around his court.

“No, my lord, you're right. I'm a cavalier, or was...”

“Good enough. I...need you to do me a favor.”

“Hmm?” I was severely puzzled by this. First he captures me and treats me like some prisoner. Then, out of nowhere, he asks me to do a favor

“You see, my daughter was kidnapped by some... beast from the forest. I need you to rescue for. In turn, I will give you your freedom. And maybe, something else…but it depends on how well you perform your actions.”

I had no choice. Either I helped him, or I rotted in a small, bland, wooden cell. “Okay I'll do it, but how will I navigate the forest?”

“I was getting to that. Coorae, come here!”

I saw the leader of the guards who captured me. He was tall, and had a satchel of seeds that he used for weapons. Along his side, he carried a spear, which was used by the Deku only in dire situations.

“Coorae, you must guide this man through the woods and make sure he doesn't escape.”

“Yes, sire.” His voice was very monotonous. Like what I used to be, until the accident.

Well, at least I have someone who knows the woods. The king has given us the night to rest up, but tomorrow, we will battle.

Chapter 5: Wooded Battle

Journal Log: Entry 1:

THESE WOODS ARE DRIVING ME INSANE! Mile after infinite mile, all you see are the same trees, Hylian Conifers. And, to make matters worse, my guide put me in SHACKLES! Of all the things a guide can do, this is the worst. I can't reach my sword or shield. We don't even take any breaks. All we do is walk around. Now I'm starting to think he has no clue where we're going.

“Only 5 more miles left!” It was like I was speaking to a demon from Tartarus. Always happy about the worst things…

“ONLY?!?!”

“Oh, your civilization can't fly?” Damn him and damn his flying ability.

Four Miles Later:

We encountered Deku Scrub traitors. Coorae called them "Mad Scrubs", which were traitors to there own kind. I tried to slash them in half, but they just went back into there holes. They then double-teamed me, knocking me down to the cold forest floor.

“I'll take care of this. Strike when I’m done” I thought he’d just leave me to rot, but I guess he couldn’t under orders of the King. Heh…

Coorae stuffed 2 seeds in his mouth and shot them out like a cannon. They hit and automatically knocked them out. This gave me the perfect chance to slice them in half, which I did.

“Forest creatures are weird…” Man, would I pay for saying that.

“I HEARD THAT!”

Coorae stuck a nice large seed in his mouth. Needless to say it hit. I didn't say a thing for about a mile, when we got to the place where said beast was supposed to be laying. It looked empty, except for the Deku Princess.

“Princess, we’ve come to save you! I’m Ev…”

“Shut up! He'll here you.” Thinking that she was delusional, I wanted to have a little fun

“Heh, wow, who could it possibly be? I see no one here. Oh, is it that big, scary leaf?! Or maybe some of that dirt over there?” Big mistake.

All of a sudden, a cute, little Deku Scrub came out.

“Oh no...” I originally saw no reason to panic. After all, it was kind of cuddly.

“What's all the fuss about? It's pretty cute. Reminds me of Ches…”

Suddenly, that lil' Deku Scrub became a Giant that the Goddesses shouldn't have left to walk the Earth.

“RUN AWAY!” Coorae and I both shouted in unison.

Unfortunately, there was a large iron gate behind us, so we were stuck. Coorae couldn’t come back without the Princess of myself without a logical reason, otherwise he’d literally become firewood.

“Well, how do we kill this thing?! I mean, you ARE a dweller of the woods.”

“You're the knight! You tell me.” Oh, how I hated forest things!

I thought, and thought for a while. It seemed hopeless. After all, it was built as if it didn’t have any weakness, and it would be relatively tough to beat it since I didn’t have any access to fire. I thought it was impossible, until I noticed a tail.

“Coorae, keep attacking it to distract it. I'll subdue it!”

“I don’t take orders from any Hylian! But since it’ll save me…”

As Coorae served as the punching bag, I snuck up behind the monster and whacked his tail a bit with my sword. It whimpered, shrunk back to normal, and hid in the cave.

“That was awfully easy…are you sure he’s dead quite yet? Maybe we should go try to finish him off.” I was worried, just not too worried. We did what he had to do, but I’m not quite sure if everything was finished quite yet.

Coorae pondered, and then responded, “Hmm…well, you are right. We probably should sla…

“Just GET ME DOWN from this ROPE!”

“Yyyy…yes, madam!” Coorae didn’t want to deal with the wrath of the king’s daughter. It could mean his head.

Both Coorae and I did as she told and untied her. We then walked back to the palace, with Coorae carrying the Princess and me still in shackles

Chapter 6: Help Comes From Beings Large and Small

We finally came back from the woods, and after seeing them almost all day, I THANK THE GODDESSES!!! Too much of a natural thing is a horrible thing. As soon as we arrived back, we were greeted in open arms. Well, the princess was.

“Oh, my daughter, thank the goddesses you're okay!” Since his daughter was back, he was of course ecstatic in every way possible. This reunion reminded me of the last time I actually saw Sis…no, I can’t think about that. Not right now. I can only pray that she is safe.

“Dad, I wouldn't be here if it was for those two.”

She then pointed to both me and Coorae. Finally, I could get recognized for the work that I had done. This had never happened in the Hylian Army. So, even though the recognition that we both got was very minute, I was very happy, and wanted even more of this feeling.

“Oh yes, Evan, you're free to go.,” I was glad, because Coorae would finally let me out of these wretched shackles!

He solemnly agreed, since it was the orders of the king, and I was free to move. I was about to leave this wretched forest and hoped that I would never have to see this evil woodland again, but then I remembered the sole reason that I even came to this place, so I rushed back.

However, the door that I needed to access was locked since it was the middle of the night, and it was time for the Dekus to rest from the tense situation that they had felt for the past few days. I was trapped. I dare not go into the territory of the Kokiri without a negotiator, so I had to sneak into the palace, which turned out to be a very big mistake.

I looked around the palace, and noticed a small opening that I child could call through. Being the only opening, I had to make a fool of my self. About a half hour later, I was through. But I wasn't done yet. Palace guards were everywhere. Me only having a sword, I was screwed if I was caught. I had to use ninja-like reflexes that I don't have. I actually managed to sneak around the east gardens using some gymnastic skills I learned while I was in the training that was required for my knighthood. I was caught at the end, though and was sent BACK to the dungeons. It was the same scenario as last time, but I spent a whole night in the dungeon, before the king had released me. This time, he was REALLY pissed, and I had had to face the tip of his fury…

“WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE!!!!?!” It was just as I had predicted. He was very furious.

“Well…um, your majesty, I just needed a chance to explain my situation.”

“Hmmm…it seems like this cannot wait till tomorrow, so you are free to speak. Start whenever you wish.”

I explained everything. The war, Onox, my revenge, the whole shebang! He understood it all. He knew the pain and actually cared about how his soldiers felt. He too, as almost every leader in Hyrule did, wanted this war to end. The only problem is that he didn’t know how he could end it.

“Yes, I agree with you. This war should end, and you seem like the only possible Hylian who actually gives a damn in doing so! However, with Onox and Veran not cooperating with everyone else’s wishes, how do you propose in doing so?” None of the leaders were familiar with my “share the pain” strategy, so I had to tell him all about it.

“Well,” I replied. “In order to take down a power, all of the minorities must come together to resist the oppressing force, no? Well, how about we get together all of the other civilizations in Hyrule together, not necessarily everyone, but, just like one person to do their share to help out in this righteous cause?”

“Well, I do not like your strategy, seeing as that, oh, let’s say, 8 or 9 people versus the entire Hylian Army, along with the Shiekah, would be quite a futile force. However, seeing as that no one else had proposed a plan, and I do want to get my rest…Sir Harkinian, you will get your wish. Leaffoot, come hither!”

Out stepped Coorae, with seeds in one hand and a spear in the other.

“Yes, sir?”

“Coorae, I’m putting you under the wings of Evan Harkinian. He’s doing a bold thing in order to get rid of the opposition forces, which are his own people. And, in order to assist him, I need my boldest soldier to go help him. Do you yourself believe that you are the boldest soldier there is?!” The Deku King was talking in a very aggressive and boisterous tone.

“YES!”
“Then follow Harkinian and prove that you are my boldest knight!”

“I will,” He responded solemnly, showing barely any emotion whatsoever.

So, finally, the first part of my quest has started without a hitch. However, since I just fought a battle and had killed some Kokiri, the next part would be oh so difficult…

Chapter 7: Flawed Invasion

Both Coorae and I stood at the gate to our next destination: The Kokiri’s Territory. In here could either lie easy negotiations, or pain like that we have never experienced before. The further we went in, the worse it started to look. The skies got grayer, the life became lifeless. The trees went from a beautiful shade of green to an ugly brown.

“Wh…w…why is this place all…dead?” The Deku questioned, as most people would if they had a chance to see this.

“There was a battle not long ago, you should know. The blood probably soaked into the ground now…” said I in a monotonous voice. “Death has spread. And there’s nothing we can do to stop it.”

Both of us ventured on even further, looking around at what happened. Pools of blood, like large polka dots that lay in the ground, were only but a few steps away from each other. Corpses were still there from our battle, not cleaned up as usual. The iron armor that my kin had proudly worn was now starting to rust ever so slowly. Fungi started to appear on the wounds, eating the flesh away, on some limbs leaving nothing but bone.

“By goddesses…what is this?!” exclaimed the shocked forest creature. “This is inhumane! Nothing should be left like this!”

“Onox doesn’t care about any of our lives…” slowly, I responded. “All he cares about is the one thing he believes in, manifest destiny. Greed has controlled his body. If he continues, his one belief will come true. And then all of us will be vanquished.”

The forest creature did not speak any more.

Eventually, we reached the entrance to the village, which turned out to be barren. The houses were not teeming with life. The grass was tipped with the stain of blood, and so were the roots of trees. The stench of rotting flesh was all that anything could smell.

“It seems they never cleaned up here…” I sighed as I turned over a rock, revealing the bones of what seemed to be a deceased Kokiri soldier, who was helplessly killed in the brutal slaughter. “This is exactly why I want this all to end…senseless madness.”

Coorae suddenly injected, “Well, then I suggest we get going relatively shortly! They’re probably expecting our arrival!”

I turned and looked over towards the main part of the village, brushing away the hair that the wind blew in my face. “You’re probably right...okay, I’ve got a plan,” I elaborated on. “We split up. I’ll try to take a safe, concealed route.”

“What about me?”

“Well, seeing as you are an ally of the Kokiri, go on ahead. Perhaps we can work out some agreement that before I get caught.”

“Agreed. Mr. Harkinian, I hope you can fare well by yourself,” The Kokiri then flew off towards the center of the town, ready to work out some terms so I can get more help to end this tragedy…

Meanwhile, far into the town, inside a large building, a girl looked out of her castle tower. Shadows covered every part of her body. Nothing could be comprehended about her look, since her body was all shadow.

“Hmm…another Hylian,” she spoke softly, yet fierceness could be heard in her voice. “Bring in his body. I want him dead, now!”

Chapter 8: Fugitive on the Run

I walked around slowly, looking at the damage that my colleagues…my FORMER colleagues…it doesn’t matter.

As I walked around the town, I could still see craters left from our trebuchets and onagers. Any area that wasn’t damaged by the rocks were left scalded by the Greek Fire that lit the ammunition up with a flame of passion. Grass was blackened with the leftover ash of trees which fell to the burning flames. The smell of burnt sap filled the air even far away from the tree line where Coorae and I had arrived in.

I pressed on foreword. My goal was to arrive at the town square, where the Kokirian ruler had taken residence. I could not go in the front door, no. They’d recognize my blood 100 paces before I could possibly set foot inside the castle. Relationships between my species and theirs were…well, pretty much dead. So, I had to try and sneak around on the outskirts of the town, hopefully without being spotted by any civilians. However, the risk of that happening was minimal, due to all of the training in order to get to my current status in the Hylian militia. I needn’t worry about that.

Step by step, I continued. Occasionally, as I sneaked across the plain, a Kokiri came out of their house for various reasons, some odd to my view of life. However, during those moments, I stayed prone and took cover in a patch of shrubbery. Needless to say, none of them did notice me. Further along, though, I could not say the same…

Eventually, about two thirds of the way to my destination, I encountered what appeared to be a group of Kokirian soldiers. They shouldn’t have been there, since, from my experiences at least, guards NEVER leave the castle. On the contrary, they stay at the castle until they are decommissioned. Always.

Despite them being about 127 paces away, I took no chances and acted there and then. I ran off onto the right into the town. I knew they spotted me, I just knew they would. A person makes much noise while running, which is the advantage of staying prone…

Within a few seconds, I managed to reach a building. Not caring if there was possibly anything inside, I leaped into the window. The glass shattered as soon as it made contact with my leather-gloved hands. The sound of it was painful, yet crisp and refreshing. I could feel shards land in my ear, my neck, any place that was not properly covered by armor or cloth. The pain was prevalent, and I could easily feel it, but was of the minimalist of my worries.

I quickly got up and ran upstairs. There seemed to be a pressure on my knee that was most likely caused from my jump into whatever this building was. Yet again, it was a minimal problem. When I reached the top, which was not far at all, being a house inside the Kokirian Empire, I quickly looked around, making sure that there was no one in plain sight. After I was sure that it was clear, I quickly headed left, to a room which I thought was unoccupied. When I entered, I could see my prize: a crossbow and a bunch of bolts. Just what I needed to take on a mass of soldiers, a raiding party, or whatever the size of the group was. I ran across the room, to grab it…

“Mi-mi-mi-mi…mister? What are you doing here?”

I had woken up a Kokiri child. Yes, there are adult Kokiri. However, their bodies take much longer to mature than normal Hylian boys and girls. And by much longer, I mean four to five times as long. The magic of the forest only allows the Kokiri to have to spirit of the child for so long, but longer than any other species known in Hylia.

“Nothing…I’m just…a….a…representative…of the…Hylian…Lumber Co. Your father is allowing me…to stay in your house for awhile…” It wouldn’t work, it couldn’t work.

“Oh…okay…” It worked.

After he fell back fast asleep, I snatched the crossbow, the bunch of bolts, and headed up to the roof. I’d steal the ultimate Kokirian tactic and use it against them.

Sniping.

As I climbed up more stairs, I could hear a banging on the door, I knew they found me. It was only due time, after all, until they would corner me.

“We know you’re in there!”

“Get out and drop all of your weapons!”

“Let go of my son right now, you dirty b…”

I managaed to reach the roof, and could no longer hear any of the comments. The wood on the roof acted as a sturdy platform for my weight. What was even better was that leaves were scattered on the roofs throughout the whole community, which was built with a tight knit. Even if they did by chance get up to here, after the house was unlocked, the leaves could provide as a type of camouflage, meaning I could quickly leap across from primitive building to building and have a minimal chance of being seen.

Once I pulled back the actual bow and loaded up a bolt, I took careful aim at the group. From what I could see, their tattered clothes and dirt-filled faces made them appear as nothing more than common ruffians that one would find on the street. But the crossbows, spears, short swords, shields…all of the weapons were clean. They were guards, no doubt about it.

Once I spotted a clear target, I slowly, yet surely, pulled the trigger. The arrow flew at blazing speeds right through the head of a Kokiri. Blood and other fluids poured out before the midget kneeled down in pain, then fell over, dead. I quickly readied another, took steady aim, and fired once again. The same thing had happened with the other one. However, I sniped one too many.

“THERE HE IS, ON THE ROOF!!!”

As soon as what appeared to be the leader yelled that out, they readied large branches and lit them. As they were about to lay them at the edge of the house, one of their own kind went to protest.

“NO! My son is in there! You wouldn’t dare hurt one of your own kind, would you?!”

But it was too late. The first story was already ablaze in a bright, hot flame. This, unfortunately, was my cue to leave. I quickly hopped up, and started running and leaping rooftop to rooftop, determined not to stop till I get to the castle.

As I ran along, I could hear arrows whizzing by my body after every few steps that I took. They became particularly louder the farther I went along, jumping from roof to roof, mainly because they were becoming more accurate at predicting my location while I was moving. I dare not look behind me, lest I trip and fall, giving the soldiers ample time to shoot me full of bolts.

I was running out of energy. I was close, but by the time I’d arrive at the door, they’d have me. I was getting slower, they were getting more accurate. It was only a matter of time before I’d have a bolt shot through my head. However, a ray of hope appeared out of nowhere, one that seemed like a godsend.

As my arms pressed against my sides while I was running, I felt a bump. Reaching in a satchel, I found the most useful thing in this situation. It was not a grappling hook, nor some food for energy. It was a bomb. The answer to all of my struggles was through a small, compact ball of gunpowder. I quickly lit it, and as I leapt to another roof, dropped it in the small crevice separating the two buildings. When I was a safe distance away, the fuse reached its end and the gunpowder ignited, blowing debris everywhere. The buildings cracked and crumbled down with a satisfying crash and left debris spread across the road, blocking any remaining soldiers from coming through. The blast also covered the area in a thick, grey smoke, preventing snipers from spotting me. For once, I was home free.

At the final rooftop, I carefully leaped down and walked through the palace doors. After this massive assault all on this one Hylian, there was no one left to guard the place, so I carefully walked in, making sure that I didn’t lose my guard for one moment.

The palace was dark…too dark. The foreboding atmosphere made me want to leave, but I knew that I couldn’t. The entire court was covered in shadow except for the bits of light that cautiously shined through the window. It seemed as if this was a place where any form of light was forbidden.

As I walked through the darkness, I could hear the sound of a child laughing. It was certainly out of place, making it seem most peculiar, but I continued along. Carefully I walked through the darkness. Then, there it was. The same laughter. The closer I came to the throne, the louder it got. My heart was pounding swiftly. My breath, heavier as time went on. It seemed that I was losing it, but I just didn’t let the feeling take over me. That is, until I approached the throne.

When I touched the seat, a vision came through my head. A very powerful one.

I was at a fiery, dark cavern. The only thing that I could see was a rune gate in front of me. All of the other images were cut off. Standing in front of the gate was one solitary man cloaked in a tattered brown robe. Compared to the gate, he was an ant.

Suddenly, the gate opened, at from the gate spewed darkness and shadow.

In the middle of the vision, I felt a pressure on my back, and fell down, once again unconscious.

Chapter 9: Peace

Dark…silence…peace…something that one longs for throughout life…the peace that you will never get during the bustle that is day to day life…even at some point, whether it’s during sleep or working to make a wage that’s just enough to continue to feed your family and pay the tax collector. Something of your possession never ceases to work, except in death, in which you reach everlasting tranquility, free from everything…

The same joys can come out of a simple state of unconsciousness, in which one proceeds to have no care in the world, just absolute peace. I dreamt about nothing…I was just there, by myself, enveloped by pure shadow…yet I was not afraid that the reaper had come to take me from the mortal world to place me among the free wanderers in the west. I knew I was still alive…somehow.

What seems like days continued over and over again, until the shadow finally relieved itself of my presence, and my eyes opened, only for my first sight to be even more darkness. I could feel the presence of a soft, thick material on me, and a cushion underneath…It seems as if all of the General’s claims about the Kokiri being “savage and uncultured” were false.

The room that I was in was dimly lit only be two candles, one of which was only about the fifth of the size of the other. The simple table they laid on made it seem quite simple, and reminded me much of the home I used to remember oh so well when I was younger…With the small flames, I managed to notice, although barely, I bandage that was wrapped around my left hand, which seemed unusually tender, as I don’t recall injuring myself during the short engagement with the palace guards. I carefully unrolled the bandage to reveal, of all things, red flesh. There were no visible wounds, just a large red spot covering the palm of my hand…could the vision that I had actually have been real?! But…no…how could I go from a forest all the way down to..

“Madame, there is a man who refuses to give his name outside waiting for you…he says you called for the presence of him…he says to be a historian.”

“Oh, he’s finally here…Beau, be a dear and let him inside to the Green room, will you?”

Startled by the two voices, I became jumpy, and fell back, hitting my head against the wooden backboard of the bead I was laying on, leaving a slightly painful bump on my head. After rubbing the miniscule bump, I got up off of the soft mattress and crept over to the doorway, using the soft candlelight as I guide. I felt around the wall, and when I grabbed the cold, metal knob, I opened the door, which was curiously unlocked, a smidgen, and then put my eye up to it so I could see. A tall man walked down the dim hallway in a large, oversized robe. Symbols that seemed of foreign descent were sewn upon his limbs, chest, and back. The only detail one could make out of his figure at this odd angle would be the small protrusion that his nose makes from time to time as the robe swayed with his every movement. He stopped at the door to the room adjacent to mine, swiftly turned the knob, and entered into it. Soon behind him was the Kokirian ruler, in a light brown dress, her blonde hair let all the way down to her waist. She entered the doorway, and carefully shut the door behind her, as much as to not leave a single sound.

I turned back towards the direction of the small bed, as it had seemed that there was no hope in finding any other interesting activities...However, on my way back, I noticed in a small hole by the edge of the candle’s glow. I put my ear up to it…and yes! The sound was perfectly clear! Perhaps I would be clued in to as why I am here, and not dead…perhaps…

“Hmmph, you’re lucky I wasn’t tired. Why did you arrive so late?” inquired a high voiced person. It had to be a Kokiri, most likely a female. She must be their leader…

“Oh, shut up,” a deep baritone responded. “I don’t have a free schedule…be glad I could even show up. Looking for him is taking more effort than I thought.”

Who was the man referring to, I pondered. What is he talking ab…

“I have, however, gotten closer in my search…there still is one person of royal blood around. He should have what’s needed,” he continued.

“And if you can’t find him?”

“Well…” There was then a sudden silence. After about 20 seconds, the man continued on.

“Wij worden gekeken. Kan u mijn inheemse tong spreken?” the baritone asked.

“Ja,” replied the higher pitched one.

From there on, I was lost. I just listened in awe as the two exchanged thoughts incomprehensibly, at least to me. Eventually, I could hear the man get up and open the door, with him and the young girl following out, then silence. I still couldn’t believe what he was talking about…the king had no heirs from what I knew, so who could the person of royal blood be? And how did he know that I was listening in…no matter. I simply climbed back into bed until I went back into my previous state of silence…darkness…peace.

This is pretty good. Your chapters could be a bit longer, and don't use caps unless you're naming an organization with initials. The caps disrupt text flow, or, for me at least.

Most of my chapters were just changing the dialogue from script to actual dialogue, so that's why they're shorter.
