**Fore note: I have very little time for writing and often get writers block. All I ask from those of you who choose to read this is that you do not bother me to get chapters up. I will try to write some when I can, but it may take a while to finish the whole story. So please just keep an eye on this story for new chapters, as I have no set dates to when I can get them up. Thank you. And now, on to the first chapter... One... A woman stands in the darkness of a computer room filled with colorful displays and complicated formulas. She studies a particular screen in front of her with a picture of an elven girl with dark green hair as she thinks to herself. This child... What is it that she possesses? Not even my own brother, he who was the greatest magician in the land, could produce enough mana for this. Now he is no more. But this girl, she somehow has enough energy to-- A man clothed in a dark blue and green cloak opens the doorway into the room, spreading light across the floor. He steps through the doorway and closes the door behind him. He approaches the woman in front of the screen and bows down onto one knee. "Milady..." The woman, as if dropped back into reality, turns around, startled. She has her hand on a knife concealed at her waist, ready to defend herself if needed. "There shall be no need for that, I assure you." "Oh, Deke, it's you. What news have you for me?" The man called Deke rose to his feet, his eyes as dark as tree bark. He smiled, showing white, pointy teeth. "We have news on the whereabouts of the subject for Project Sigma." The woman seemed to brighten up, as if filled with a new energy, restoring the grace and beauty once seen in her long ago. "Where is she?" she asked, her voice full of hope and excitement. Deke replied, "My intelligence group has discovered her to be residing in Asgard." The woman's smile instantly was wiped off of her face. "Asgard?...It will take some time for us to get there. All of our transportation systems are gone, and the summon spirits are no longer helping anyone but the guardians of the Great Tree..." "Milady, what do you need me to do?" inquired Deke. "I need you to track that girl. Become friends with her. Do whatever. Just don't harm her, and protect her at all costs. She is no use to me if she is dead. Understand?" Deke, hesitating slightly, replied, "Y-yes, my liege. I shall do as you wish." And with that, he spun around, exiting the room. The mana contained in this girl...Will it truly be enough?... |

Two... "Kari, come up to the front of the room and share for my class what you learned about the Eight Heroes during your time in Heimdall, please." "Yes, Professor," replied the girl as she stood up and started walking towards the front of the classroom. She has hair the color of pine needles and pale blue eyes. She stands 5'5" tall and has a presence that could brighten up even the darkest of caves. "Now, Kari, I would like you to begin after the Great Tree was reborn." "Yes, sir. After the tree was reborn, the Eight Heroes, those who restored the tree and saved the world from Yggdrasill, went around the newly rejoined continent, teaching the people about the Great Tree and how there must never be another war, else the land would die, and so would the people. The people took this information seriously and have since destroyed all tools of war, and have gone back to steam powered ships, in order to preserve the mana, or life energy, supplied by the Tree. 100 years went by and all but three of the heroes passed away. The ones left were the half elves, Raine and Genis Sage, and the angel, Colette Brunel. Colette became the first queen of the new lands and still reigns today, able to live for 200 years due to her angel blood. As for Raine and Genis, nobody has seen them since, although rumors have been passed that they have been seen in various villages. These are only rumors, however, and have not been verified. And that is all that I was able to cover before my parents died and I moved here." "Very good. You may go back to your seat. Now, with the Mana Shortage Era completed, you may all enjoy your break. Be ready to meet up again next winter. We will be discussing the use of mana and magitechnology in history. Class dismissed!" And with that, the 7 students ran out of the small schoolhouse, chattering to one another about various things, all excited over their break. "Hey, Kari, wait up!" shouted a boy as he runs up to Kari. "I was waiting for you to get out." "Oh, hey Max! Sorry I didn't see you. What's up?" "I want to show you something in the forest. I just found it this morning. Come see!" He took off towards the forest just outside of Asgard. "Hey, wait up!" called Kari, running after Max. "Come on, Kari! You're too slow!" He ran deeper into the forest, followed by Kari. The two kept going until Max stopped abruptly in front of a large pillar. The pillar had intricate carvings on it in an ancient language. "I can't tell what language that is, though." "Max...this pillar. This pillar is...amazing! This seems to be from the Mana Shortage Era. Fascinating..." She went around to the other side and then gasped." Max! This is no ordinary pillar...This is a piece of--" Just as she was speaking an explosion shook the land, and a large fireball appeared over Asgard. "Max! What just happened?!" "I don’t know...an explosion maybe?...Quickly, we must go help the villagers!" He started off towards the village, followed closely by Kari. When they reached the village, everything was in flames. The buildings were destroyed and nobody was in sight. "What...what happened here?" Kari ran to the mayor's house, hoping to find him there. She arrived and his house was also in flames. The mayor, however, was lying on the ground, covered in soot. "Ka...Kari...You must...go." gasped the mayor. "Huh? What happened here?" The mayor inhaled greatly. "Men...came looking for...Ah…" He never got to finish his sentence, for he fell silent. "What? What men? Who were they looking for?" She broke into tears and fell down next to the mayor, sobbing uncontrollably. "Kari! Kari, we should leave. If these men come back, they may kill us too. Lets go!" Max said, grabbing Kari and pulling her to her feet. The two ran out of the village and into the forest. "Can't we go back? What if people survived?" yelled Kari, infuriated with Max. "Even if there were survivors, what if those men were still there? They may have killed us. And then what? You would've helped nobody and gotten yourself killed, too!" "But those people treated me like family! I can't just leave them!" "You have to, Kari! Take control of yourself! Now, I suggest going to Luin. We have to let the mayor of Luin know what happened. He will be able to help us." Kari stayed silent for a moment before answering, "A-alright. Lets go..." And so the two started off for Luin in search of refuge from the disaster at Asgard. |
