“Oh come on!” she shouted from her seat, “were do you get this nonsense?” The teacher looked up at her sternly. “This is all proven facts Ms. Era and I would prefer it if you would stop shouting out in my class.” She cringed at the sound of her last name because she preferred to be addressed by her first name. “Well you listen to me Mr. Laraway; the village was not destroyed in an avalanche like everyone thinks. That village was destroyed by a large and powerful group of bandits.” Mr. Laraway looked up at her somewhat mockingly. “Oh really now, and just how do you know this? The Kashic snow village was destroyed fourteen years ago and not a single villager survived. Besides the only way to get up to the village would be from the w…” “The west mountain face, then through the valley of serenity and past the guardian ruins. I know.” said Nyo with her arms crossed in front of her as she glared at her teacher. A look of both shock and surprise mingled along the small age lines of Mr. Laraway’s face. “Well now,” he managed to get out after a while “it looks like you have been listening to my extensive lectures on dead civilizations. Why I’m very impressed, and here I thought that all you did was sleep the day away.” “No, not really” she replied. “I find them rather dull and false in fact. Everything you’ve told us so far is just some lie to cover up both your incompetence and what really happened. A perfect example is what you’ve said about Kashic.” By now all the students had stopped writing down notes from their books to see the word battle that was going on between their teacher and fellow student. “If she’s not careful she’ll be on her way to see the headmistress” whispered one of the boys in the back row. “I just can’t believe that Mr. Laraway hasn’t snapped yet” commented a little blond in the front. “Who would have guessed that Nyo would act like this towards Laraway” said another girl. All the students continue to comment on what has happened when Nyo spoke again. “Have you ever noticed Mr. Laraway that for every test I’ve taken I’ve passed? Or that for every paper that I’ve ever had to write for you I’ve gotten perfect marks?” “Well to tell you the truth, yes I have” stammered Mr. Laraway. “It’s as if you had actually lived there or experienced part of their culture, but then again I also thought that you had stolen the paper from another student and claimed it as your own work.” Nyo’s eye started to twitch and her temper began to rise at the accusation from Laraway that she would do such a thing. I mean sure she had stolen or more so barrowed with no intent to return, but to steal work that she could do herself, that she knew more about, well that was just insulting. “Well then Mr. Laraway, have you ever been to the Kashic Village?” she asked as she stood up. He blinked a few times then spoke. “Honestly, no I have not, but I am in the process of planning my trip there hopefully for the spring” he replied “Have any of your sources of information ever been there? I mean you would think that if you are teaching us their material” “Well, yes, I think so” he stammered at her question “but most of my information has come from books” “So your saying that your taking second hand information, which you don’t know is true or not, and teaching it to your students. Hmmm, well that doesn’t sound like such a good way to teach if you ask me.” She walked out to the isle and towards Mr. Laraway “I would suggest knowing what you’re teaching Before you teach it” “How dare you talk to me like that you little degenerate” Mr. Laraway’s face now started to turn a bright shade of red. “One more word out of you and you’ll be on your way to the headmistress’ office” Now face to face Nyo looks up at Laraway with a smirk “Word” “That’s it!” Laraway roared “Get out of my class this instant” “No that’s alright, I think I’ll stay here and actually teach the class the truth about Kashic and the other dead civilizations” she replied smartly A skeptical look crossed Mr. Laraway’s face “Exactly how do you plan on doing that? You don’t even know a thing about the village” he said hotly “Why I beg to differ you pompous, arrogant know nothing” she shouted. “Kashic was my home until it was destroyed by those bandits.” In little more then a flash she holds up a necklace from her pocket that had the Kashic village crest on it that only the people who lived there had. “That small little thing means nothing to me. What is it supposed to do, scare me?” he asked arrogantly with a small smirk. “This necklace and pendent are a symbol of the Kashic village. Only those who have lived there have it. It’s a symbol showing that I lived there.” A hush fell over the students in the class as they looked upon the pendent hanging from the silver chain. “That’s it” whispered the little blond. “It’s really the symbol of the Kashic.” In a flurry of pages the students turned to the page that briefly explained about the Kashic pendants. “Now you see Mr. Laraway even your students know more then you do” carefully she slid her necklace back into her pocket. “I also think that you should be taking notes quite soon.” “Oh really now? Then might I ask what really happened Ms. Era?” came Mr. Laraway’s voice as she desperately tried to stay calm. “Now to be perfectly honest with you I don’t think you have much of a right to know. If anything you should go back to school to relearn what your brain has apparently forgotten.” By now Mr. Laraway’s face was a very rich purplish-red hue. “You young lady have no right to talk. I’ve been through far more schooling then you could even fathom!” he shouted at her as small droplets of spit sprayed from his mouth. “I beg to differ!” she snapped back. “I’ve been to most if not all of the places that you’ve ‘lectured’ us about. The dieing desert, the angelic forest, bright springs and many other places are just an easy example. I’ve even been through the waste lands.” A loud gasp from the rest of the class filled the room after the words “waste lands” had been said. “You-you’ve really been to the waste land?” asked the little blond. Nyo nodded her head and looked at her with a small smile. The rest of the class stared back at her in awe and shock. “What was it like?” asked a boy. “Did you have to fight any monsters?” came another excited boy’s question. “Are you really the famous thief and mercenary Nyo Era who has the rare ability to talk with animals? And is it really true that you have a pet falcon and fox” asked a brunet with enthusiasm. Another smile crossed Nyo’s face. “Now all of these are very good and thoughtful questions.” She walked up towards the podium in a mocking manner. “Now then, shall we begin class?” “Yes mama” came the reply of the students and then everyone broke out into laughter. “Hold on just one minute. This is impossible that you could have been to and survived the waste lands, and what’s even more of a lie is that you claim to be the thief and mercenary Nyo Era. She was captured and imprisoned.” The shrill shriek of a falcon rang through the room. Its sound resembled that of a laugh in a haunting way and all heads turned towards the window as Nyo laughed. “What in blue blazes is going on here?” he demanded. “It’s a falcon” cried the brunet. Swiftly she turned to Nyo. “She’s your friend isn’t she?” Silently Nyo nodded as she crossed the room and opened the window to let in the falcon. Swiftly and silently, like the natural killer it is, she swooped in and landed on the podium and shrieked again. “This here is Luna, and she is a very close friend of mine.” Calmly she stroked the feathers on Luna’s head. “And yes, I am able to talk with her” Excited chatter from the student’s erupted. Heads turned to one another as they talked in wild fantasies while their eyes lit up and shone the same way they did when they were children. “Then prove it.” came Mr. Laraway’s skeptical and angered voice. “Show us that you can really talk to that falcon and that she can understand you.” “I would be glad to” replied Nyo sweetly as she gave a small bow. Another shriek came from Luna as she flew to a dark corner of the room. All heads turned to watch her then back towards Nyo hoping for an explanation. “Why did she fly away like that?” asked a boy in the back “It appears that she can’t stand the glare that’s coming from the bald spot on Mr. Laraway’s head.” Now unable to hold it back any longer she bursts out laughing. All the students joined in her laughter as Luna flew back up to the front of the room and dropped some thing brown and furry onto Mr. Laraway’s head. “That’s enough out of all of you. Stop this childish laughter and get to work this instant.” shouted Laraway as he tried to regain control of his class. “And what in the world is this thing?” He reached up and grabbed the small fuzzy object that had fallen upon his head. A stunned silence fell upon the class as jaws dropped and they saw the dead squirrel that Mr. Laraway now held in his hand. “I have no clue were she got that Mr. Laraway” came Nyo’s shocked and now small voice. “I want you or of my class this instant!” shouted Laraway, his temper finally taking control of him as he threw the dead squirrel out the window. Without a moments hesitation Nyo shoed Luna out the window and left the classroom. Now the sound of pens scratching against paper drifted through the air telling her that the recent events were now forgotten. The classroom door opened and shut as Mr. Laraway walked up to Nyo. “I have just informed the headmistress that you will be making yet another visit to her office” said Laraway in his typically annoyed and arrogant voice. “And if you do not show up at her office I will take your punishment into my own hands.” Laraway walked back into his class and slammed the door. “Guess I get to pay another visit to the headmistress” sighed Nyo. Nothing but the sound of her footsteps and the scratching of pens along with the slight murmur of teachers giving a lecture could be heard echoing through the halls as Nyo walked quietly to the headmistress’ office. Now standing in front of the great oak doors she sighs again and enters to hear what the headmistress has to say about this “little incident.” |
