Just heard about it too. In addition to his active participation in the forefront via Nintendo Direct and flashy stuff for E3, just to name a few things we need to remember: The guy who saved Earthbound by reprogramming it, supposedly on his own even. Compressed Pokémon GS so much that Kanto Region was even added in. Programming for Smash Bros. Melee alongside other fellow developer staff. This man is a legend, and he will be missed. RIP |

RIP Iwata-san T_T Such sad news. With the whole E3 thing last year and the speculation he would be replaced for Nintendo's poor performance, I hope he felt vindicated with how much better its games and platform have been doing recently. Legend |

Lots of people sending their well-wishes regarding Iwata-san, including Hideki Kamiya and the official Playstation twitter account. |

This has gobsmacked me a bit more than I would have thought. Mr. Iwata was such a fun figure as the president of Nintendo these past 13 or so years. From Iwata Asks with their awesome obscure trivia, to the goofy randomness of Nintendo Directs, he was always a joy to watch and listen to. I really loved all the old stories he would explore of the 8 and 16 bit eras. The person coming in after him has huge shoes to fill. R.I.P., Mr. Iwata. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CJwkKtyUkAA6WXy.jpg |

The image of Nintendo's flag being at half-mast really hit me in the stomach more than I figured it would. Farewell, you gloriously bizarre man.

I feel like I want to cry, Iwata-san was such an amazing man, and its sad that his life was cut so short. He was probably one of the best influences in the company, and now whoever is going to replace him is going to have shoes so big it will take sometime for the to fill them. I'd say give the job to Reggie, but that is a pipe dream. We can only hope that whoever does can do the man justice. |

That would be horrible. It's unlikely to be Miyamoto either since he never wanted to be a suit and just wants to make video games. Takeda or that guy that people were saying Iwata was grooming are the likely candidates. Shibata has more of a chance than Reggie but even that's a pipe dream. Reggie's forte is being a PR guy. Right now Miyamoto and Takeda are the two big names and they'll both be running things for the time being. It's really sad because for as much crap as Iwata has been getting these past years he really was a one of a kind CEO. He cared about games first but still knew what he was doing as a businessman. Reminder that Iwata was the one heavily against Nintendo going mobile, trying to appease the share holders on the issue. Reminder that it was Miyamoto who wanted a lot of the gimmick shit like the 3D on the handhelds and the touchscreen on the gamepad. Innovations that still aren't being used to their fullest by developers despite being the most costly peripherals on their respective devices. Reminder that it's Miyamoto who's known to upend the tea table after production has started. RIP Iwata |

Nintendo is still a Japanese company, they'll want a Japanese CEO. Reggie is doing fine as NoA President, that's likely where he'll stay until he decides to go elsewhere or retires. |

What made Iwata stand out was that he was a programmer and developer who was then promoted to business positions. I don't think Miyamoto will take the job as he's been scaling back his influence over the past few years. He even admitted he has very little input on the NX and has taken on a supervisory role. That said, Miyamoto might not be a bad CEO as I think he's learned his lesson about gimmicks at this point and has come to understand when a certain share of the market doesn't like what he's doing. It would mean he'd no longer play a a part of game development and would simply take on business dealings at this point. Howver, Genyo Takeda is the most likely candidate for the role. He's not a bad choice and like Iwata, he started out as a programmer and developer. He was even the first person to come up with the idea of using an analog stick for 3D controls and he along with his team created the first save back up battery system which was used so you could save in the original Zelda. He's been on the business side of things since the Gamecube era. It should be noted that with Iwata gone, both Takeda and Miyamoto are currently acting temporary directors of operations. I hope they find a good person for the next CEO. Iwata left big shoes to fill. As Badboiu said, he knew how to run a business while also still caring about games; the next CEO should share that same philosophy. |

Agreed with most sentiments above about Iwata's successor. Genyo Takeda, to me as well, feels the most appropriate choice. And almost certainly will have to be a Japanese CEO. Miyamoto feels much more suited to PR these days, with the way he has stepped back on other projects. I'd be happy with that status quo |

Hopping around the web in the wake of his passing, I was reminding of the time Mr. Iwata popped on GameCenter CX and spent some time with Chief Arino. It's bittersweet, but still adorable: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qdRzxmgYWo I might as well link to Iwata Asks, too: http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/ I also recommend Mr. Iwata's "Heart of a Gamer" speech from GDC 2005. IGN has a transcript: http://www.ign.com/articles/2005/03/11/gdc-2005-iwata-keynote-transcript But you can watch it here with chapter breaks: http://gdcvault.com/play/1014847/Heart-of-a |

For some reason, it feels surreal to me that Fire Emblem: Fates ended up being the last game he did an Iwata Asks on. Heck, the April 1st Direct that revealed the first info about it was his last Direct. |
