This one doesn't have sci-fi, and is set in the same time as the origional book though.

Gankutsuo was damn near perfect, but I'm game for a more traditional adaptation.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly.

It was a sci-fi retelling of the story that was probably one of my all-time favorite anime ever. It differs from the original story by having Albert be the main character rather than Edmond, and of course by adding things like mechs & starships & aliens, but at the core it was a fantastic adaptation that everyone should check out, even if you never read the original.

I see, sounds interesting. I'll give it a look if I can find it.

Thanks for the details!

Gankutsuou came out ten years ago and was decently popular with a very unusual art style; the whole thing's on Crunchyroll right now.

It's kinda funny, I loved the original CoMC and yet I never watched that show. Maybe I was afraid of how much they'd changed the story.

There are some changes; most notably the fact that Albert is the lead (to show how Edmond initially appears to those unfamiliar with the story), as well as some minor changes to some secondary characters (some are fleshed out, others made less important), but it's still utterly fantastic. The dub is especially praiseworthy, IMHO.

I am aware of certain plot spoilers about Gankutsuou, like say

Spoiler: click to toggle

Even so, if I did watch it, I've just started finally watching JJBA so that show would have to wait.

That SPOILER is mostly true, though it's a bit more complex than that, in keeping with the book's core theme of the dangers of revenge.

I can second Gankutsuou. It was phenomenally well done, and the only thing that might turn some people off is the art style. It's very distracting in the first half a dozen episodes in particular, and I know at least a few people who had trouble continuing to watch just because of that alone.

I love its opening, but one thing I never got over in the ending is that Batman Beyond villain dancing around in the background.

I like how the Count's design looks almost exactly like the one in Gankutsuo. It makes me want to watch this even more by unfairly leveraging my nostalgia.
