This is a bit of an odd request, but I'd figure I'd try. Not knowing Chinese, I'm having a bit of trouble. I'm trying to find out how many of Ruan Lingyu's movies are available for purchase/download (I'm not even sure if they're mostly lost or not, English Wiki doesn't say and IMDB doesn't even list everything). There are a handful of movies available in the US, but if there are more out there I want them. So if anyone can try to help me look for links on where to purchase her stuff or get it by other means, I'd appreciate it. I checked Chinese Amazon but they have the same stuff we seem to have on there, and I don't know of any Chinese torrent sites or whatever. Her wiki link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruan_Lingyu |

Okay, after doing a lot of research, I've figured out thanks to various Chinese info sites that only 9 films still exist. I've managed to locate some of them available to purchase on DVD, and some to download. There are still three I can't find at all. If someone could please help me find these to purchase/download I'd appreciate it. They are: Love and Duty (戀愛與義務, 1931) I know this had a newly done restoration that looks great. It premiered at some film festival in China this year Goodbye, Shanghai (再會吧,上海, 1934) Coming Home (歸來, 1934) Edited by Orochi Kusanagi, Oct 21 2014, 11:09 PM.

What got you interested in her films? I'd never heard of her before. |

I pretty much only watch old movies from the 60s and before, with my favorites being silent and early talkies. I always record stuff off of TCM, so when they showed The Goddess I watched it and thought she was amazing in it. Then I looked her up and became even more interested in her. Sadly, it is hard to find out much about her in english, but I did find some rather interesting pages. Wow, that was kind of a depressing read. Her life sounded awful, as was the guy she decided to settle with. She made some poor choices, but she definitely didn't deserve the terrible places they ended up bringing her. I'd be interesting in tracking down her movies myself, but I don't know if I could enjoy a silent film. I've actually never seen one. |

http://www.thebeijinger.com/blog/2010/12/01/goddess-returns-ruan-lingyu-retrospective-bc-moma According to this Love and Duty exists with an English translation. I haven't been able to find these last three movies though yet. It sucks trying to look for stuff in a language you have no understanding of. >>;; I checked some streaming sites, nothing came up. I don't know what sites Chinese use for torrents. |
