I Googled Ciel no Surge, and . . . it's a pretty weird concept. How was the first game, if you played it?

Haven't played them yet, but I wanted too since they're basically sequels/successors to the Ar Tonelico series.....or Prequels, I can't remember.

Ciel was stupid. It was a life simulator for those who had no lives. But it required to always have a connection to PSN in order to work. Also Vita game itself only came with the first episode, and you could only get the other 9 episodes via JP PSN DLC. Which is of course, impossible with a NA account.

Though as I mentioned in the Vita thread, they're re re releasing Ciel no Surge as an offline version, coincidentally named "Ciel no Surge Offline". Not sure if it'll have all episodes on the cart as it should though.

Koei teased on their twitter yesterday about announcing something, and since CnS Offline and AnS+ were announced that same day, we all pretty much assumed they were confirming a NA release of the original AnS. Koei's one of the few companies willing to bring over these niche titles.

There is no way to play Ar without playing Ciel first, there are various BG info you need to know from Ciel (and to boot it off the DLC episodes is not even finished in Japan!).

Also, there is a new release of Ciel that contain DLC episodes until episode 5. Or you can just get the original game that only came with episode 1 and get the combo pack that have the DLC episodes up to episode 8.

And frankly, the always online feature is not needed if all you want to know is just the story and the world settings. I'd just get the offline version frankly, and I've been keeping off from the franchise for a while.

Gust confirmed that Ciel no Surge Offline will have everything. All 12 episodes, all DLC outfits+new ones, and more newer stuff.

Break only rules created by men, uphold only what is true and everlasting

So this is coming out next week. I'm trying to decide what I really want to pickup since there are quite a few releases I am interested in. Is it really alright to play this game without having played the game it's a sequel to that never came out in the west?

Don't bother. You apparently can't play Ar without having played Ciel fist.

Can't recall if the game is getting a physical release though. If it is, probably best to pick up ASAP since it's a prequel toe the Ar tonelico games, and those always sell out quick and then become stupidly hard to find without paying $100+ for.

Yesterday Tecmo Koei Europe (Ironically the GOOD Tecmo Koei unlike the douche bag assholes at TK NA) teased we'd be getting Ar no Surge Plus localized. and today that confirmed that it's also going to get a physical release in a Limited Edition form.
