There's a wonderfully frantic little shoot 'em up on Steam right now called Broforce. Here's a trailer to give you an idea of the game's pace, mayhem and tone: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAABfGPIMo0 It's a blast, and I say that literally. It reminds me of the best parts of Contra, Metroidvania and Metal Slug, as you step into the shoes of a bunch of action movie icons to mow down the forces of evil in the name of AMERICA and FREEDOM--collateral damage guaranteed! Not only is blowing up half the map possible, it is probable and even a good idea. If you're heading toward a cluster of bad guys arranged in such a way as to screw you up upon entering, you can literally "dig" a hole through the environment with bullets to attack them from a completely different angle. With all of the exploding barrels, falling pieces of masonry and other environmental hazards, using the lay of the land to your advantage is half the game. The other half is getting to play as testosterone-overdosed parodies like "Rambro." The game most clearly homages the goofy 80s action flicks of old, when Arnold and Sylvester Stallone were kings, but you can play as anyone from an Arnold-themed "Commandbro" to much more recent characters like Will Smith's "Bro in Black" and Wesley Snipes' "Brade." Some of the choices really surprised me, and finding each character's quirk is amazingly fun. At first, you wind up with a group of characters who are largely the same except for their main weapons--one has a machine gun, another one has a grenade launcher, the next one has a shotgun, etc. Then you start to realize each character has a special attack or ability. Again, you start off with slightly different types of grenades, but you soon start to unlock Bros with special homing bullets, remote-controlled rockets, a twenty-second invincibility period and a turkey stuffed with a stick of dynamite that draws in hungry bad guys before blowing them away. Admittedly, the game has some balance issues. The first few stages are a walk in the park before suddenly ramping itself up to teeth-gnashing difficulty. The bosses are especially painful. There's also a massive disparity in several of the Bros. The game makers set out to make each one different and quirky, but there are clearly almost unstoppable and almost useless characters. "Indiana Brones" has a measly flare gun that deals pathetic damage and arcs in a strange way when most everyone else has a straight firing pattern, and "Snake Broskin" has a stupidly powerful default gun and a molotov cocktail special attack with a huge blast radius. But the game is still in its testing phase, and the makers are using this early build to get feedback and tighten things up. Of course, I would love the game and strongly recommend it even if they don't change a thing. The madcap insanity makes the game incredibly addicting, even if most stages are organized in such a way that you're probably doing something wrong if you clear a level in more than five minutes. Sure, you're going to die early and often, but the stages are brief and the Bros (which double as spare lives) are plentiful. There's an element of trial and error as you stumble across new environmental hazards and types of enemies for the first time, but it just makes it all the more satisfying when you get it right with the power of DEMOCRACY. The game is more than worth the $15 price tag, and it's not even complete yet. |

Of course Snake Broskin is broken. How could he not be broken? Kurt Russell made Arnold Schwazzenger look like a chump. XD But yeah, I played the Brototype a while back when it was first released. I thought the gameplay and character unlocks were a riot, but what really sold it for me was the co-op gameplay. The "high five" button actually slow-mos the level for a few seconds, useful for quick assaults or boss fights, but that's not why they included it. It's there because the helicopter starts taking off as soon as the first player touches it, and does so so quickly that it nearly always leaves the other player behind. The solution? They force you to high five at the end of every level to make you both escape alive. XD I haven't bought it yet though. It's still not finished, and I don't want to start it until all the planned characters are included. Edited by ZetaStriker, Apr 28 2014, 07:37 AM.

Broforce just one hell of an update. Highlights include: -Rebalanced Bros, particularly the otherwise-mediocre Indiana Brones -A new power suit enemy who can be defeated in order to swipe the suit for yourself like something out of Metal Slug -Two new Bros: Broniversal Soldier, whose special is to revive nearby enemies or Bros as your partners, and Time Bro, who can slow down everything while he zips around screen The only drag is that there is some sort of error in my copy of the game that hasn't allowed me to start it up since Wednesday. The tragedy of it all |
