Hi Guildies, bit of a new request here. Just wondering if you guys had any games you could recommend with solid Steampunk settings and themes. Going by the usual searches and via this from Kotaku, I came up with a list of my own that I wanted to play. Background: my wife has recently started a Steampunk fashion store and a roundabout way of me helping with pageviews and SEO is to contribute to her site's blog. To keep things more in line with my own interests, I'm turning to games for content - reviews and whatnot to begin with. So far (titles in Italics = not owned yet):
A lot of the list is composed of RPGs - something I'd maybe want to trim down just for time constraints. A few smaller titles caught my eye on Steam - some Early Access, so they might be good to look at too. Any help/thoughts would be appreciated :) |

Ah Project Deluge... if only Nintendo had taken cues. Hoax aside, it was a pretty engaging concept. |

Shinbo, it's good to see you still live! Been a while. I'll offer what I can. -Deponia(PC) . . . I think. The trailer looked Steampunk, at least, but honestly I'm not sure. While looking it up to try to double check though, I found out it's $1.99 on Steam until the end of the weekend, so that might be an option. -Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magicka Obscura(PC - on GOG.com). This one is a Baldur's Gate-style RPG with some really crazy ideas all thrown together. I've started it a million times, but I never get far because it's lack of auto-saves always ends up biting me in the ass sooner or later. Still, a near game with some really cool ideas. Also, a LOT of weird sex stuff. Like the goat in the brothel, and a quest that randomly ends in an orgy when you get your reward. -Steambot Chronicles(PS2). This one I didn't play much of, but it looked really interesting. You basically drive these man-sized, bipedal steampunk bots around, use them to fight and complete tasks, etc. Was a really late era PS2 game if I remember right. -Torchlight(PC). This Diable-esque series has a lot of Steampunk elements, but it mostly fades into the background. Especially if you don't use the guns. |

I would honestly say you could consider Final Fantasy 7 kinda Steampunk, if Steampunk had to work with more of the modern era than 6 did. And 9 seems steampunk from what little I've experienced. You can also count any of the games set in Ivalice, depending on how 'hardcore' you want the Steampunk to be. 12 has more of that flair to it, as does Tactics Advance 2... but the other ones (Advance 1, vanilla Tactics) don't seem to be that way. Then again, ever since 6, Final Fantasy's always tended to blend tech and magic in odd ways. Chrono Trigger has steampunk elements in it - like a time machine made out of Medieval Era tech, right alongside Gato, the Steampunk is kind of a hard one to nail down in videogames, though, because few of them go for the stereotype. EDIT Found a Wiki Entry with more answers... -Ultima: Worlds of Adventure 2: Martian Dreams (Old-style Western RPG in the Ultima flair, found on GOG). -The Thief Series of games -The Professor Layton series of games. -On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, the Penny Arcade game series. -BioShock Infinite, though all 3 BioShock games would apply... -Dishonored There are others in the article, but those are the ones that stuck out to me. FF7 is technically dieselpunk, but I guess it depends on how picky you want to be. There are a lot of kinds of punk these days. |

Indeed. I just added to my earlier post, via the lovely edit button, that there are several things I never considered "Steampunk" that actually are. I didn't think we had a "Dieselpunk," though. Would that make FF8 "HighTechnologyPunk?" |

If we're making up our own "punk" themed worlds, how about GhostbusterPunk? Everyone walking around with Proton Packs and busting Ghosts. In the Victorian era, because that seems inexorably tied to these "punk" themes. |

I'd play it. But then again I said that about the actual Ghostbusters game, and I never got around to that. |

If you're an achievement/trophy hound, fair warning: some of the 360's multiplayer achievements are glitched to death and ungettable, but the rest work... but online is deader than Batman's parents. And PS3 online has no servers. But it's a fun game. Just played through it again over the last week, and it really satisfied my once-a-year urge to be a Ghostbuster. |

I would recommend Steambot Chronicles too. There is also a decent PSP game. |

You guys are legends :) thanks for all the tips! Not sure I want to dive into more RPGs, but that does seem to be the more common gametype for this type of setting. Also, we reeeally need Cyberpunk games. Agreed about FF7 being more diesel than steam, but agreed also on the fact that a lot of these are just blending together different genres and themes now. Combopunk? |

C-c-c-c-c-combopunk breaker? Anyway, yeah, there aren't a lot of steampunk video games in general, and most are RPGs or adventure games. Not a lot of cyberpunk either, although that's gotten more common recently. Syndicate, Deus Ex, the Shadowrun games and the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 are the only straight Cyberpunk games I can think of. A few others are popping up too, for instance an Occulus Rift games where you "hack" in the same way people used to "hack" in '80s movies, by going physically inside the program. There was that Ghost in the Shell game a while back too, wasn't there? I don't know, Cyberpunk games might be better represented after all. |

There is another game on Steam that fits the steampunk thing you want. It's called Skyborn. One of those games developed using RPG Maker. Hearkens back to the SNES era, has some magical racism going on, and has humans as the oppressed people. |

That just reminded me of Windforge, which I don't think was mentioned. It's basically a Terraria-like, and you can build you own skyship, attack other skyships, and mine whales for oil to drive them into extinction. That last one was kind of fucked up. >_> |

...actually, that one is about as "Steampunk" as Gundam could get, yeah. Not sure how cheap a copy of MS Saga: A New Dawn is these days, as that's the localization name... but it's easily "Mobilesuitpunk." Although the outfits scream "colorblindpunk." |

Total War: Rome 2. lol someone smack me in the back of my head. Have been pretty distracted lately, and the friend I play Titanfall with went overseas for a while so I stopped playing that for a bit (getting a bit stale and in neeeed of new content) so I'm trying to get more hours into Rome 2. Also spent last week getting steampunk props together for a convention we went to on the weekend. Here's our little airship captain in his steampunk'd stroller :P I'll get better images up on my blog soon I hope - in progress shots and whatnot. |

Thanks guys :) proud of the little guy. His cousins can't stand headgear, let alone stuff over their eyes... plus, he stayed calm over all the noise The outfit and stroller was cobbled together pretty quickly, so we're hoping to get something more elaborate going for next time. I know that as a point of professionalism, I want to put in more time on the stroller itself... propeller/s, actual blimp balloon part over the canopy, more copper and brass! |

That's pretty awesome. It's good to see another baby being so "chillax" about life - sounds like your kid is a lot like my little Henry. Doesn't care about barking dogs or anything (though he does jump at soda cans opening, oddly enough). And if you can make up a mod for the stroller to match his costume, that would be nothing short of incredibe. |

Show off your steampunk stuff some more to us too, if you can. I never went too deep down that rabbit hole, although I did assemble one really cool costume and a steampunk Cyberman costume to for Halloween. It's always cool to see what other people with more talent than me could make though. XD |
