This serie is a webnovel, published on the syosetu.com website(Quite a few novel there get picked up by Publisher, and turned into Light novel, It was published in April of 2010, Enterbrain picked it up on March, 2011, It sold over 300k volume already.
Currently 6 book is out, Book 1~5 is Episode 1, Book 6+ is Episode 2.

Plot:

In the midst of the event, a socially awkward gamer called Shiroe along with his friends Naotsugu and Akatsuki form a guild called Log Horizon so that they may face this world which has now become their reality along with the challenges which lie ahead.

Unlike .hack or SAO
This serie doesn't have a "goal" of breaking free back to the world.
It's mainly a exploration daily life fantasy realm serie
Book 1 is mainly world building, so if it's like Horizon, give it 5 ep.

MC is a strategist, not a muscle, so not like Kirito, more like Lelouche type stategy, later book will show why he earned his nickname.

A few thing for ep.1
One thing in the novel, the enemy have "killing" intent, something they aren't used to
And not used to the control, done well
But losing that much HP to the plant, that's a anime only thing, in the novel it was single digit damage damage(Lv.28 monster vs. lv.90 with end game gear PC)

At this rate, the princess won't be introduced till the 2nd season...she's a fun chara though.

No one else watching?

And the reason the food have no taste, because the NPC are making the food through interface too.
In the serie, the NPC are real living people with their lives and feeling too.
And there is a way to make food with taste, if you cook it normally(Chop up material, cook it, flavor, etc), instead of through the ingame interface(Recipe+Material+Press button = Food that look good, but have no taste)

NPC aka. Native are called Daidijin(Big Rock/Earth people) All 30k Player are called Adventurer

If watching it, I say give it till episode 5~6 before dropping it.
That should finish Book 1, and start Book 2.
Book 1 was mainly world building, Book 2 on is the main story.

It's not just Japan's server that has player "taken"
Each region(China, US, EU, Japan, etc) have players taken.
And Each Region have multiple "Server" think of a server as a kingdom. Shiroe is currently stuck in the Akihabara Server(Each server is different, like the old PSU game)
Japan, because it's a small region(Size of Japan) by the end of book 2, It was able to come under one government.
China server is the world is MUCH bigger then people, so it's more like the Wuxia serie, with the Crouching Tiger & Hidden Dragon type body guard guild escorting Native and Player from town to town.
EU server is Medieval warfare, with Guild vs. Guild trying to get land and resource
US server...think..4chan...

And comparing it to SAO...
Log Horizon leader, Shiroe will be more successful, Kirito will only be like Nyanta and Akatsuki, a strong loner, but to succeed in this world, you need to be able to command 30+ guild member in large event.

But Shiroe, is more like Lelouche, the anime made him too.."nice" and it's by NHK, so it'll be interesting ot see how he unite the Akihabara Server with trickery, trick/steal all the money from the two biggest guild, and trick the Native Princes.

So...
.hack = Character driven and mystery solving
SAO = Just for fun serie
Log Horizon = World building/exploring fantasy serie

So Episode

Player cannot be killed, even if you are killed, you respawn back in the great temple of the last town you're in.
There can't be PK going on in town, if the "game" sense you're about to have conflict in town, Mecha-armor piloted by lv.20 Native will appear(They can defeat Lv.90+ player easily)
But outside of town, PK is going on alot, because, when you die, you'll drop money and loot that you're carrying, and even inside of town, it's still not that safe, since the current rule is, as long as no killing occur is fine, that doesn't mean other activity won't happen.
And while out exploring, Shiroe, Naotsugu and Akatsuki met a PKer bandit group.
We are introduced to more ingame info.
Naotsugu is a tank, his job is just to draw enemy attention and tank the damage.
Shiroe, although a mage job class, isn't a offensive Mage, he's a pure support mage(In Elder tale, it's considered the weakest job, as you're either really good at it, or you're not, Shiroe is only one of two player that are famous for it>
As what happned with Serara from CMA stuck in another town.
Marielle wants to take her guild elite to try to rescue her, and want to ask Shiroe to watch her guild while she's not here, but Shiroe knows that her success chance isn't high, as they aren't a guild that focus on clearing map, but one that just want to have fun.
So Shiroe volunteered to go rescue their member.
And beside the default horse that most player can get, we also see that Shiroe and Naotsugu having Griffon, a item that was only given to player that cleared a special event(While they were in DTP)
The Griffon speed is 10x that of a horse, but you can only summon it for 4 hour per day, it's food is meat, it's b attle ability is equal to that of a small dragon, less then 200 player have completed that event and owns a Griffon.

And control change still takes getting a bit used to.

Mage - Now instead of hotkey, they just have to do pose and yell out spell name, some specific pose or hand motion might be required for certain spell.

Healer - Now the hardest, because now, insead of TPS, it's FPS, and you have to aim the Healing spell effect.

Assassin/Thief/Fighter - The Melee class has the largest change, as there is no longer a Dex setting, if you can hit, it counts, if you miss, it miss, same for enemy attack, and Skill rely on Motion/pose(Something like Microsoft Kinect?), so might be easier then setting hotkey, another advantage is that it's also possible for none fighter class to equip sword and do certain sword skill(A certain Priest usiing a sword, not introduced yet)

Minstrel - The hardest job to play as, not only do you have to do motion like Melee class, you also have to control spell like a Healer class

Tank - Although you can feel damage, it's been reduced alot, to about...10% of actual normal damage.

Because of these change, it's another reason why Shiroe(Only 100 Max level of his class, Enchanter, out of 30k+ in Japan) are able to defeat the Pker, because he was taking his friend out and practicing their skill, as you can see the Pker not really using much skills.

The two skill that Shiroe used.

Electric Fault - A very low damage skill, a tennis ball size electric ball surround the enemy, dealing continius damage, it's a very pretty, but damage dealt is very low, the path it travel, makes it seems like a electric wrie surrounding the target.

Zone Bind - A status effect spell, when target enemy is hit by party member, damage is dealt 1000*5

I don't fully understand what's going on but it looks better than SAO already so there's that.
About 100k people that play the game Elder Tale are tansported to the Elder Tale realm.
The player are now called "Adventurer"
And gain ability that the native don't have.
1. Immortal, even if killed, you respawn in the great temple of the last city that you are in.
2. Stat = real life, so Shiroe, even as a mage, at lv.90, he's stronger and faster then any native(Able to block a punch from a professional soldier native with 1 finger, Naotsugu as a Guardian knight with high strength and stamina, can run and fight continiously while wearing armor that weigh 100+ point, and strength can lift over 800 pound, and these stat will grow by "leveling" up.
3. Able to create new things that are from t he old world, that doesn't exist in the Elder Tale world
4. The Native, aren't NPC, they are living, real people, and they don't know what to think of these 'newcomer"
5. The adventurer appeared 240 year ago, Shiroe was known by one of the famous sage as a great magician, and have been active for 95+ year(When Shiroe joined the Beta)
6. Event that occured in game, are actual event that occured in the Elder Tale world, so Killing the Lich King that Shiroe did with DTP, is what made him well known among the sage.
7. As long as you don't start conflict in neutral zone, the Guardian(Native+Magic armor) won't appear, other activity, kidnapping, holding people hostage, can be done.

The serie doesn't have a "Big Bad"(Haven't read about 1 yet)
It's mainly about the "adventurer" trying to figure out their role in this world, and what they want to do.

Book 1 - Shiroe and gang, go rescue Surara, and see how bad the "adventurer" are behaving(City that Surara was in, female adventurer and NPC are being captured and sold into slavery, Surara managed to get away)
Shiroe discovered that the NPC aren't NPC, but real living people, and decided that the Adventurer need to be controlled, and enacted a plan to take over Akihabara(It has 1.6k people, over half of the Adventurer on the Japan server, and has the 4 largest battle guild, and 3 of the largest merchant manufacturing guild) And it's a city that's completely under adventurer control.
- Book 1 is just world building, and character interaction -

Book 2 -
Book 2

Book 3 -
Book 3

Book 4 -
Book 4

Book 5 -

Book 5

I'm caught up now, and I have to say I'm really enjoying this. The lack of a big bad, the deeper exploration of what being trapped in this pseudo-world without a purpose really means, and seeing it all from the perspective of a strategist all make it feel very unique. I had been worried that this was another .hack or Sword Art Online derivative trying to cash in on recent popularity, but I feel like it's really doing its own thing separate of the two. At worst, it was inspired by .hack in the same way most modern fantasy is inspired by Tolkien, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Well, if there's a antagonist...the closest would be her, who appeared at the end of Book 5

Interesting path they took for Episode 3.
They explained the food thing, and didn't forget about salting food.
And also did a flashback for Shiroe to explain why he doesn't like to join guild, instead of monologueing.
And they introduced the Mind reading glasses guy, aka. Leader of DDD already..

Fox, not cat.
From the Honeymoon Log - Log Horizon Manga, and if you read it, you can see the same event, except from the Crescent Moon Guild perspective, and also why

Shiroe Fangirl #1 wwww

And read through vol.1~3 of it.
It's an interesting read, it explained some more stuff.
1. Why Marielle likes Naotsugu, before he joined up with Shiroe, he saved her guildmate

Finished it. Overall enjoying it more than SAO concept wise, since SAO's was pretty stupid with the whole helmet thing. Though SAO had the much better production values and visuals so far. Action wise, Have to watch some more to see. Still not sure on music.

.hack// Sort of started treading into the same territory as Log Horizon after .hack//Link.

Well, mainly just Tokio.

Unlike the coma victims Tokio was flesh and blood transported into the game itself. Too bad the game never got an english release. =/

As much as I'd have loved to see Link in English, there's no way I could stomach that gameplay again. It was a volleyball simulator, I don't understand how they thought that was a good gameplay mechanic when they were designing it. Is Kite with you? Okay, volleyball! Is is Blackrose, or Balmung? You play volleyball! It destroyed most of the game's individuality except for those occasions when you used the super attacks.

But yeah, I'm still not exactly sure what is up with this show's world even though I do really like it. I find it interesting that everyone's trapped in their avatar, whatever that happened to be, and the odd problems like tasteless food and such were great flavor for the setting. The tone here, between the strategist main character, an MMO world that actually follows MMO rules, and the lack of a "defeat the X and free everyone!" plot really make it feel pretty unique to me. I'm enjoying even this slower opening arc, so once the show picks up speed like Tangy said it would I'm excited to see where it'll go next.
