This is the next logical step. Arkham City proved that you could have a huge scale game with multiple playable characters with similar, but different gameplay styles. Taking that to the next level is a good next step.

My only gripe is that this is a prequel. Arkham City basically went out of its way to show that Hush would be playing a huge role in the next game, Scarecrow was preparing to gas all of Gotham, and Azrael left a prophecy saying that all of Gotham would be set on fire. I hate the idea of having those ideas not being used.

Yes, used yet. I was just really looking forward to an Arkham-style game that was Joker-less and had those kinds of villains come out next, but this is obviously going to delay that if this is indeed a prequel.

Also, if this game really will be taking more from the New 52, I do hope that the classic costumes will be available as well.

My guess is that this is akin to the non-numbered games in the Assassin's Creed series, personally. They probably want to go ahead and do this just because Hamill has repeatedly claimed that he's pretty much done as the Joker, so if you're gonna do something where the character'll still be around, you'd better do it NOW.

I for one am disappointed. =/

The thread title led me to believe that the Arkham inmates were setting up a baseball league or something. =/

They support the Designated Hitter rule, so they can screw off.

I though Hamill was already done with the Joker role?

He said that the Arkham stuff would be the final Joker work he does. Which I've assumed to mean that he'll do the Joker in it as long as he shows up, but that's it.

Hardly a deal-breaker, but it IS sort of a shame given how things have been going for him.

And the more I've thought about it, the more I think I'd actually really like it if they got Diedrich Bader & Jeff Bennett to play the leads in this one. If they're really going for a Silver Age vibe with it, then they'd be a perfect fit. Wouldn't have to even be super campy like B&tB was, just a bit more...colorful.

All things considered, the direction of the new game is amazing foresight by the Arkham crew. In a lot of ways, Arkham City peaked what was created in AA. Everything from combat to style to the overworld was perfected. After this, how much longer until everything becomes stale and repetitive? You can only go so far.

By doing a Silver Age game, it allows them to do something fresh with the setting and the style. Being able to use different JL characters allows a variety of characters which makes sure that the Batman-only combat doesn't become trite as well, which even by the end of AC started to become evident. But in the end, since they are going in this direction, taking Dini off the writing team is necessary. He is an inherently dark writer and the fact that neither he nor Bendis could make a comedic show like Ultimate Spider Man work shows it.

The new DLC, Harley's Revenge, was pretty mediocre with its only redeeming factor being that the story switched between both Robin and Batman. But I think that the DLC was made specifically to see how a story that would switch between Justice League members would operate - the gameplay was acting as a prototype for what is to come. Again, great foresight by the game's developers.

That would be interesting. Though, i'd rather a Batman Beyond movie. Doing another regular Batman movie would be suicide. Doing a BB movie would be genius. Not to mention, Adam West is at that age where he could pull off an older Bruce like no one else can.

However, the problem with a game or movie is that BB lacks compelling villains. I bought the DVD set a few weeks back and have been rewatching the series, and noticed how uninspiring so many of the villains are. Other than Spellbinder, there weren't many that caught the imagination.

Terry had plenty of good villains. He just ended up killing most of them. XD

It's kind of hard to make new villains memorable when the previous villains (Joker, Freeze, Bane, etc.) are so iconic.

For what it's worth, I think they did a good job. Although...the Boss is right that Terry ended up killing most of them.

Well, to be fare he didn't so much kill them...as not save them. XD

Beating Bruce's Rogue's Gallery would've been near impossible, but I thought they did a pretty good job overall. Blight, Spellbinder, Shriek, Curare, Inque, and the Royal Flush Gang were all excellent foils for him. And of course, we mustn't forget his GREATEST foe....

Who could it be?

Batman Arkham Origins has just been announced for PC, Wii U, PS3 and Xbox 360! Set several years before the previous chapters in the series, the story will put you in the shoes of a younger Batman. Players will meet many of the franchise’s most important characters for the first time and even develop important relationships with them.

Interestingly, Rocksteady isn't involved. The game will be released October 25 of this year.

Plus some handheld Arkham action is on the way for 3DS/Vita. Check the link:

I love this time of year. =D

EDIT: Crazy awesome Gameinformer cover:

Heading up the vision for Arkham Origins is creative director Eric Holmes, known for being the lead designer of open world action hits The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Prototype. A self-professed lover of comics, Holmes even wrote the miniseries Transformers: Megatron Origin for IDW.

More details on the handheld version as well: It'll be a "metroidvania" style game, and it will take place following the console game's story. Check the above link for a brief video and more info.

I am very excited for this. As for Rocksteady not working on it, I sort of expected it. I believe someone at the studio said WB wanted to put out Batman games more frequently and that Rocksteady was being put to work on a game that wasn't this prequel that was going to be Arkham City's sequel. So I suppose WB Montreal will do the prequel this year and maybe Rocksteady's sequel will come out next year.

And whoa, Deathstroke.

Also, wasn't this game supposed to be somewhat of a throwback to the Silver Age?

The Silver Age part was never really confirmed, merely rumored, since it was gonna be an origin story. And since the majority of modern Bat-fans would go into a frothing fit if Batman went anywhere near his campier side (look at the general reaction to Brave & the Bold), I can see the WB not wanting to risk that.

@Lowe: Makes sense. Though, i'd still find it interesting if they included some older elements of Batman, if just to give the game a "younger days" kind of feel to it.

The GameInformer video mentioned eight assassins are after Batman. We know one is Deathstroke. Considering this game will include other DC heroes, logic tells me that maybe the other assassins could actually be staple villains belonging to other heroes. Any guesses as to potential Supes/Wonder Woman/Green Lantern enemies who would take up an offer to kill the Bats on Christmas Eve?

I'm kinda hoping we see Deadshot again, myself (or would it be for the first time? Prequels, man.) I thought his mission in Arkham City was pretty fun.

EDIT: Maybe Cheshire? It might be fun if we see him meet Talia this way. Personally, I would love it if they slipped Talon in but he probably has too much baggage.

Deadshot & Cheshire are good picks, as is the entire League of Assassins. I'd actually like to see the Court of Owls show up, since up until the end I though they were really awesome.
