Watching the trailer again, I swear the Abyss gets name-dropped.

It does more than get name dropped. Found out some fun spoilers out there in the wild with early copies getting out there.

Huge spoilers and stuff

Going off rabid Dark Souls fan speculah, Rhea was actually kidnapped and dragged to crystal jail. You know those Balder Knights that conveniently hang out like 10 feet away from her in the chapel? Yeah, it may have been those guys.

Rhea presumably went Hollow when she found out she was the next one in line for Seath's bizarre biology experiments. The squid-ladies that try to escape from the jail are human maidens that Seath injected mutagenic dragon goo into, and Rhea was probably going to turn into one of those. Seath gets a little lonely down in the crystal caves and he's been trying to create the perfect dragon-lady, possibly to be his mate. The squids are failed test subjects. One of the item descriptions (it's for one of the cell keys iirc) actually explains the "failed experiments" part, and there are a couple of non-hostile squids that will start crying in women's voices if you let them live.

Or at least that's what GameFAQs told me.

was I close?

I ended up deciding to wait for the PC version, so I'll have to keep away from this thread for a bit to avoid spoilers while everyone else digs deep into the game.

The enemies gank the fuck out of you right out the gate. It's like the forest from Dark Souls only everywhere.

I am annoyed by how enemies seem separated into two groups: "longer reach than you" and "a whole fucking mob". Things feel really stacked against melee-reliant players in the first few hours.

That said, I've made a lot of progress already. The Ruin Sentinels are a colossal pain in the ass though, for the same reason Ornstein and Smough were.

I feel like a hipster for thinking this, but I wish this franchise was still small. Like, I can't go anywhere atm online without hearing about it, and while I don't care about spoilers, the total media flood from everyone having it makes me feel bad I won't for awhile.

I literally can't even look at twitter today. :(

I'm doing my best to avoid all info too. I have seen my brother play a bit so I understand a bit of the style they were going for. Can't say I enjoy the look of the changes too much. I'll spoiler wrap some gameplay thoughts in case you want to go in truly blind.

Wow these fucking bosses man. Were they even trying with them?

What about 'em?

Also, regarding rolls: fast/slow roll is determined by being under/over 70% equipment burden, while roll distance and invincibility frames are evidently tied to how far under/over 70% you are and your "agility" stat which is somewhat nebulous. I have Adaptability at 15, and I definitely feel it is safer than before.

Ironically bosses are much easier compared to a room with 4 hollows now >_> Mostly thanks to the stupid dodge change...

I'm having a blast with that covenant.

I'm stuck on the 3 Sentinel fight, but the borderline cheap Life Protection Ring is keeping me from fretting too much.

I have to wonder what happened in the last 1/3rd or so of the game; the Shrine of Amana and on feel downright mean-spirited, with very anti-player room setups and "gotcha" scenarios. It's like it shifted from skill and careful player to requiring multiple deaths to work out the intended solution.

Game debuted as #1 in moonland. Probably as well in NA.

lulz that GTA is still up there, and ExVS is barely up there, and apparently has not really sold anything after it's 1st week.

It's a pretty shitty PS3 game by its own judging from how the additional content for the port is not worth mentioning.

Started the game yesterday and I've been enjoying it quite a bit after my first few negative impressions. Once I got in to the meat of the first area it felt like I was playing Demon's Souls again. I'm pretty much running a carbon copy of my DaS perfect run character but male right now, loving the greatsword moveset.

Summoning and being summoned is a helluva lot easier than it ever was on 360 for me, as well.

Just cleared out the Lost Bastille.

Kinda strange how what was a poison trap in my game turned into the arrow trap when I get summoned to other peoples games.
I can't help anyone in Earthen Peak because they keep dying to that trap chest right before the Jabba boss fight.
