No clue how interesting this is for everyone, but in Star Trek Online the fourth Featured Episodes series is currently ongoing, portraying the return of the the 2800 Dominion ships that disappeared at the end of the season 6 episode of DS9 "Sacrifice of Angels". I'd settle for something that's watchable at this point. Maybe set it in an earlier period so there can be miniskirts, cast Summer Glau so I'd watch it etc |

Well, I've been pouring through the Expanded Universe of 'Trek, and I have to say... the novels that follow the ending of Enterprise are actually a lot better than the series itself. Characters are treated as people, not as window dressing. Things happen that seem to build up to something greater, rather than some sort of status quo reboot. Oh, and we get the Earth/Romulan War, too. The Good that Men Do is the first in this "reluanch" of Enterprise, and it's basically a fix-fic of rather grand scale. It's told from the perspective of Jake Sisko and Nog, both far older than we've ever seen them in canon, and they've recently uncovered some previously-highly-classified information hidden within Starfleet's archives. In a way, it's told very similarly to the It features a reasonable explanation for Trip Tucker surviving his random as hell death (hey, it's been 7 years, if you've not been spoiled by the Internet already...), as well as building up towards the "real" events of the signing of the coalition pact that leads to the Federation. While it was rough sailing at times, the story really works and was well written. Kobayashi Maru is another good book, but for completely different reasons. This one honestly works as a massive set-up for the Earth/Romulan War that's on the horizon. You have things like the Romulans trying to build special weaponry to work around having to fight fair - such as outright stealing the enemy ships out from under their noses through lolzhacks. The book moves slow, but focuses on many different aspects of what will become the war, so I really can't complain at all. And, of course, the titular Kobayashi Maru makes an appearance, and Captain Archer's answer to the original no-win scenario is actually an interesting choice. There's also a few nods to the previous shows - like where the planet of gangsters got the damned book from. While slow, it's still enjoyable as hell. The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing is part one of the actual Earth-Romulan War, and it actually begins in a far more interesting way than the stated canon has suggested. You've got subterfuge, ship theft, actual spies... and the Romulans eventually outright pummeling planets from orbit (though not to the point of glassing the surface). There's still a bit of a build-up going on, but at the same time, there's a lot of good explanations going on as to why it eventually becomes only Earth vs the Romulans. Characters who've received almost no development through the franchise, like Ensign Mayweather, finally get a chance to shine as they actually DO THINGS. Mayweather in particular, as he leaves Enterprise to try and fly other ships in the war. It actually expands the scope of the war even further out, really giving a good view as to what the hell's going on. Which really works, as Earth's recieving what can only be described as an "ass-pounding." The Romulan War: To Brave the Storm is the final book in the Earth-Romulan War, and I'm a little sad that it was brought to a close so soon. I suppose it's because Star Trek: Enterprise isn't enough of a seller in terms of marketability. Had this been the 1990s, they'd probably have gotten a full-fledged series out of just the war or something. The only real complaint is that the book jets along at breakneck pace - showing only short clips of the war now. Sure, you still have the much-appreciated non-Starfleet viewpoints, as well as guys like Trip meddling with shit they don't understand to provide a great subplot. We do get some fantastic scenes, like when Commodore Archer leads a fleet or three to take back some Romulan-captured worlds. The action is really well-written and flows nicely along the page, making up for the Ludicrous Speed at which the plot is going. However, the book ends on one of the odder notes of all - a complete wrap-up, ending with an epilogue that's basically a "where are they now" sequence that basically says "goddamnit, we're done writing Enterprise books. Let us go back to the future, now." Still a good ending, and one that made me smile, but damn. Kind of abrupt for something that had a bit of potential. Still, maybe we could get some "lost era" novels out of this. ------------- EDIT Also, might as well. Another book I read through was from the Mirror Universe line, which delves a lot into that lovely alternate universe where shit is fucked up and Spock had a beard. Called Glass Empires, it's one of those anthology books, where you get a trio of stories in a slightly larger than average format. On the plus side, all 3 books were actually pretty solid. The first story, The Age of the Empress directly follows the fallout from the Enterprise two-parter In a Mirror Darkly. It's not THAT bad, but ultimately is a little hard to slog through as you're not only dealing with Star Trek: Enterprise characters, but dealing with pale mirror-universe versions of them. Still, the political intrigue is fun and the shaping of the Mirror Universe is interesting to see. The Sorrows of Empire is out middle story, and it's the tale about the rise of Emperor Spock of the Terran Empire. Yes, Emperor Spock. Apparently, after our Kirk left the mirror universe, Spock decided to use the ancient Vulcan art of Choke-a-Bitch and take captaincy of the Enterprise for himself. And then proceeds to be a Boss and steamroll over everyone in the damned quadrant with his swagger and awesome. I wish I was fibbing about this, too. Still, Spock's got a plan that's rather... drastic, and it's interesting to see how it plays out with the alternate versions of the characters we know and at least respect. Things like Commodore Decker being a backstabbing dick was especially amusing. The Worst of Both Worlds was probably my favorite, though. Taking place in the DS9 era of the Mirror Universe, we focus on civilian archeologist Picard and his efforts to just plain survive in a universe gone crap. That changes, though, when someone brings up a species spoken of only in whispers: The Borg. And the resistance's own Dr. Noonien Soong decides to recruit Picard to search them out. And hey, we also get Vash showing up, as well as other minor TNG characters like Gul Madred. Bonus points for expanding the feel of the universe by mentioning the last great Space Pirate, Black Jack Crusher - captain of the Bonnie Beverly. For some reason, that just brought a bigass grin to my face. So yeah, if you like the Mirror Universe at all, you should totally grab this one. It's well worth the read. Just saw this, so I figured I'd drop this tidbit: apparently the villain in Star Trek 2 will be played by Benedict Cumberbatch, aka Holmes in the BBC series Sherlock and the voice of Smaug in the upcoming Hobbit movies. |

Oh, certainly. If there's one thing Star Trek loves to do, it's nod back to previous shows and continuity without being assholish about it. Sure, the quality can sometimes suffer if the nod turns into a layer of continuity (see: Season 1 of TNG), but it works. |

http://trekmovie.com/2012/04/30/major-star-trek-sequel-spoilers-confirmed/ My gut reaction is to go WTF!!!!, but I gotta say, given that this is Cumberbatch we're talking about, I will give them the benefit of the doubt. So far he's been aces in every role he's been given, so I can be at least slightly optimistic about this, especially if they take advantage of the new timeline to do something different with him this go-around, which seems to be the case. |

Spoilers 1 and 3 did not surprise me, as unexpected as spoiler 1 seems to be. Spoiler 2... I'm concerned, but not taken aback. SPOILER is certainly one of the best-known villains from TOS, so you could debate that they'd be stupid not to take advantage of it. And besides, it's Cumberbatch. He's going to blow us all out of the water (and the RAGEFACE looks incredible in that shot). Can't fucking wait, man. Edited by NewtypeS3, May 1 2012, 07:13 AM.
