Avengers vs. X-Men is Marvel's major event series next year, running 12 biweekly issues and featuring five of the industry's most influential writers: Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, Jonathan Hickman and Matt Fraction.

"It's one of those legendary ideas: What if the Avengers fought the X-Men? It doesn't get much easier to describe than that," Brubaker says.

Kicking off in a special "zero issue" prologue in March written by Bendis and Aaron, Avengers vs. X-Men begins the next month with an extinction-level event barreling its way toward Earth, namely the cosmic entity of death and rebirth known as the Phoenix Force. It's looking for a new host who will possess all of its power, which may or may not be the mutant teenager Hope Summers.

Cyclops, Wolverine, Magneto and the other X-Men want to protect her and prepare her if she's to be the new Phoenix. Captain America, Iron Man, Spider-Man and their fellow Avengers want her handed over to them so they can figure out what to do with her and keep the world safe from a potentially fiery fate.

Suffice it to say, tensions - and fisticuffs - arise.

"You've got two populations whose motivations are simple and understandable and defensible," says Axel Alonso, Marvel's editor in chief. "That's part of the beauty of this. You're seeing a story that evolves out of 'What would you do?' "

And on art duties:

This unprecedented assembly of acclaimed writers is joined by a trio of the industry's superstar artists: John Romita Jr., Olivier Coipel and Adam Kubert.

I hope Iron Man gets to be the dick trying to kidnap Hope Summers. I like it when Tony Stark gets to troll the Marvel Universe until its heroes turn on themselves.

End result: it goes nowhere because Wolverine and Cyclops are still fighting because Logan's an idiot and Scott's a dick, and Tony gets bored and gets drunk, causing him to misplace Hope.

Cue Hope's Day Out.

Well. Maybe Cap will be responsible since Bru's writing. Or Wanda will come back and kill Hope.

But the important question is: Which side will Deadpool be on? And will he take a bullet or a dozen for Hope?

Deadpool is pretty irrelevant and likely won't have an impact at all, so it's not important which side he's on. =o

This looking like an odd event from how things are being set up, but I guess the underlying theme is that the Avengers are butting into what the X-Men would perceive as their problem, when they usually won't give mutants the time of day if the Earth isn't in grave danger. The idea can work, but I haven't read comics in a long time and none of the writers Marvel is pulling out are that great in my opinion, so I'll probably sit on the sidelines for this one.

Schism and Regenesis wasn't enough, and I bet that most of that stuff will be ignored after the Avengers crossover.
So Hope is gonna be the next Phoenix. Sorry, but that is completely expected from all the clues that they have left since Hope was introduced. An Avengers crossover is not needed.

(Don't mind me, I'm very anti-"Big universe shattering crossovers that actually do absolutely nothing and could have been done just fine without the crossover.")

But Avengers:X-Sanction had a pretty good 1st issue so maybe I'll be a little more forgiving on the Avengers/X-Men crossover. Cable even gets to be a protective daddy and kick Cap's ass.

It still amazes me how much Cable has changed since he first entered Marvel canon. Back then, he was a stereotypical 90s anti-hero. Now, he's essentially a devoted surrogate father for Hope that will go all-out and then some to protect her.

Hope saved Cable's life by getting rid of the TO virus. Cable is alive again but with no TO virus. Hmmm, not sure I like this...

Honestly, the "event" hasn't been that bad so far. Indeed, the actual story book is... interesting, at least, and neither side is really in the wrong. I expect that to somehow change - most likely with both sides in the wrong by the end of it and a third option being viable. I am amused, though, at the fact that Cyclops is generally acting like complete douchebag to everyone.
A completely justified douchebag, but a douchebag nevertheless.

However, I must admit, the REAL star of the crossover is the "AVX Versus" miniseries, running alongside Avengers vs X-Men. Rather than being a "stunning" political commentary, a miniseries following newspaper guys reporting on the unfolding saga or even a collection of smaller stories, Versus is all about one goddamned thing:
Who can beat the everloving crap out of whom?

The first issue features two fights - Iron Man/Magneto and Thing/Namor. And I have to admit, these fights were damned enjoyable. Seeing Tony Stark basically cheat his way around ol' Eric's magnetism was a joy, and seeing Magneto be a little snarky was also a blast. The fact that the "AvX Fun Facts" keep popping up to add either little tidbits or be extremely snarky (or set up future snark) is also fucking awesome.
Meanwhile, Namor v Thing was just plain fun and felt almost ripped from the classic pages of the Fantastic Four. There's less banter in this one, though, as Ben can't really speak while underwater. Doesn't stop him from thinking in wisecracks, though. My personal favorite...

Namor: I should have finished you years ago...
Ben: Aah, you couldn't finish a book.

I dunno why, but it just brought a grin to my face.

So yeah. Despite being a "Let's you and us fight" crossover... at least it's a fun read. I don't think I can really complain about that, considering the last summer crossover we had really blew out it's welcome really goddamned fast.

Curious as to how Stark made his way around Magneto's powers. Explain please?

They do, and Spidey's fighting Colossanaut next issue of AvX Versus as well. Piotr looks roided out as fuck.

As for how Tony avoided being MAGNETO'd?

Of course, Magneto then made his own suit of armor to fight fire with fire...

EDIT
Oh, and I just thought of something.
There's more than one Nova.
Especially more than one human Nova.

So while Richard Rider might not be back, that Nova certainly is a Rider...

So, i'm reading this and I have to say, I like it better than the other Marvel storylines because even though the results will end up not mattering at all in the long run, i'm at least having a lot of fun. And regardless of how "serious" you get, superheroes should always be fun. I read some of the other collections while in a bookstore and I feel like they're missing something - one would think a collection of comics that says in big letters "THE HEROIC AGE" would be fun, but with the exception of some space-time hijinks, it's really not.

The AvX side-comic definitely is the highlight of this, as it really brings out the fun parts of each combatants' personalities and displays it in full force. Cap vs. Gambit is what I expected it to be. Cap being on the phone with Iron Man trying to have a conversation while Gambit tries his darnest to overcome the odds was interesting. The highlight was defenitely when . . .

The Cap/Gambit matchup was great, but so was the Collosanaut/Spidey fight. Sure, Spidey didn't win, but it was downright entertaining nevertheless.

AvX Versus issue 3 also gave a few fun matchups - Colosanaut vs the Thing and Magik vs the Black Widow. Honestly, I was pulling for Ben Grimm the entire time, but... well, it seems nothing stops the Colossus now. And I kinda figured that Magik would come out on top against a powerless assassin, but hey, the Black Widow held her own.
As for the main storyline? It's... different. At the very least, I wasn't expecting...

New issue of AvsX is out.

Thor vs. Phoenix Emma was intense. We also got to see what would happen of the hammer ever attempted to take on Emma's diamond form.

Daredevil vs. Psylocke was pretty cool, though nothing special. I did love DD's line where he said something akin to, "I guess you guys are going to have us on an island soon", depicting how easy it is for the X-Men to become just like the people they have fought against for so long.

To paraphrase the latest issue of the AvX side series dedicated to highlighting just the battles:

Storm (to Black Panter): You built emergency countermeasures FOR YOUR OWN WIFE?!

Well, it IS the Black Panther. Dude's entire schtick is making Batman's "prep time" joke an actual superpower. Remember how Wakanda developed the technology to defeat guns "centuries" ago?

I know, but that still doesn't make having preparations to make each and every one of your wife's attacks ineffective a real jerk thing to do.

Especially when you know the result is that it's just going to result in a fist fight with her.

It's just another thing in the list of the things the Avengers have been annoying me with during the latter part of this storyline. I was cool when everyone was being portrayed as jerks, but now that the entire storyline has become Avengers = Good and X-Men (especially the remaining Phoenix users) = EVIL BAD, I really want to see someone punch them in their faces, even though that's just not going to happen at this point.
