Well, I am officially excited. Information for Guild Wars 2 is finally hitting the streets of internet city, and thanks to Penny Arcade's Jerry Holkins having seen fit to link to it, I now have all that delicious gaming smut right here in my grubby little hands. This burst of media fire, instigated by the original's 5-year anniversary, has uncovered their design tenants as they relate to combat, character building, quests and storyline. And the results have me as excited as I've ever been for a Massively Multiplayer game. I'd talk more about it here, but I figure it's better to let the developers do that for me:

Skills in Guild Wars 2
Weapons, Professions and Races
The Elementalist Profession

Also revealed through interviews, more information on their news views on quests, dynamic world and characters, which seem to borrow from Mass Effect and other sources to improve upon what other MMOs are doing.

Rock, Paper, Shotgun: Dynamic World and Personalized Stories
Gamespot: Combat, Social Hubs and More

I'm currently waiting with bated breath to see what they're doing with the other classes now that we've seen what the new Elementalist has to offer, and everything from the dynamic quests to the Dragon Age-esque skill combos have peaked my interest. I can't wait to hear more, and hopefully, a few of you guys think so too. It'd be great if several of us ended up on there together when it drops.

New article on the Dynamic Events system they're using for their quests. Honestly, this one's pretty much a must-read. What they're doing to fill their game-world with content is nothing short of amazing, in my opinion, and makes much more sense than the traditional quest chains in other games.

http://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/dyna...vents-overview/

For those without the energy to follow the link, here's one of the more important sections of that article:

Quote:

In GW2, the outcome of every event will directly affect the game world around you. If an enemy dredge army is marching out of their main base, players will be asked to mobilize with their allies and help destroy the army. If the dredge army is defeated, other events will cascade out from there. Players will be able battle their way inside the dredge base, face off against their commander, rescue captured friendly troops being held in the dredge prisons, and even hold the captured base while fighting waves of dredge, who arrive from deep underground to try and take back their home.

If, on the other hand, players fail to destroy the army, it will establish a fort in friendly player territory. From there, the dredge will send shipments of troops and supplies to the fort from the main base while building up walls, turrets, and siege engines to help defend it. Enemy dredge forces will then begin to move out from their newly established fort to attack friendly player locations in the area, sending snipers out into the hills, sending assault team forces to capture friendly player villages, and trying to smash down friendly fortifications with massive dredge walkers. All of these events continue to cascade out into further chains of events where cause and effect is directly related to the player's actions.

For example, if the players do not mobilize to stop the dredge snipers, they'll begin to shoot down all the villagers and merchants in nearby friendly villages. If they fail to stop the dredge assault teams from capturing a village, players will need to lead a force to help liberate the town and free the villagers. All of this content is derived from a single initial event - the dredge army marching through the map.

I doubt anything is going to be a WoW killer any time soon, but I can say that MMOs are finally realizing that doing what WoW does is only hurting their chances at success. I'm glad other developers have started trying to do new and original things with their games, because it's helping the genre grow beyond what WoW created and apparently perfected. Time for us to get some real new stuff.

What ZS said. MMOs that had 100,000 players used to be considered successful. FFXI reached 500,000 back then and that was considered crazy. Now if you don't have 10 million subscribers you're considered a failure. MMOs need to be different and companies need to have realistic expectations. WoW was revolutionary but developers need to move on.

Everything they've said and shown could just be another lie. It's not the first time we've heard those promises from MMO developers. But if they can deliver on some of those promises this could be real fun.

Even with what's in the video, they leave out a lot of their genre-defying ideas. I agree, if they pull it off as promised, this game should be huge. And luckily, this is a company that I have lot of faith in; I think they can and will do it.

I'm in. As in, I'm still in. I was always in.

I know I'll need to get a new rig by then though... and I'll probably just go with a desktop instead of a notebook. My laptop is serving well enough and can probably handle things, but I want to give this game the horsepower it deserves.

Looks like I'll be getting into PC gaming for a while soon - this, Sims Medieval, Shogun II Total War, DC Universe Online...

hmm...

B-b-b-b-b-bump! So, this is finally getting near release, and the first beta weekend has been announced for April 27th-29th, and all you need to do to get access is preorder the game. Have tapped the Collector's Edition for delicious art prints, I'll certainly be there. Anyone else?

They said they'll hold contests/events to hand out codes for the betas, but most of the access seems set up for people who pre-ordered. This first event was only just announced, so hopefully they'll comment on alternative ways to get access to it soon.

So, what is everyone going to be playing this weekend? I know my first order of business is to roll up a Charr Thief, Norn Engineer and a Human Defender, playing them in that order. I'll probably jog them each through the first few levels of their local events, then try out World at War mode to see what that's all about. Doubt I'll get to any legitimate, organized PvP though.

Yeah, Rogue looks too much fun. You have a preference on weapon builds yet? I'm looking at maining Dagger/Pistol, with a Shortbow as my secondary. I like teleporting with my ranged weapons. XD

Woo~ I have it all installed now. Less than 24 hours until I get started! Not that I'll have THAT much time with it tomorrow, given my birthday plans this weekend.

Well I didn't get the chance to try PvP, and didn't even finish the available story, but I did plow through most of the events on the map for the Charr region. Had a lot of fun actually, although I ended up hating that Dagger/Pistol combo I talked about before. Daze and the Blind were decent, but ultimately useless compared to the dagger's much more useful support abilities. A group-hit cripple and a high damage attack that grants invisibility to set up backstabs? Not to mention the high damage of a dagger build in general. It was definitely worth it to go Dagger/Dagger with a Shortbow as my backup. The daggers just do crazy damage, and the multi-hit nature of the bow makes it great as a ranged backup against groups. And I love detonating the explosive arrow early to do tons of damage with shrapnel.

Overall, I love the quest structure. It's very different, but very cool, and I participated in some events multiple times. Those with dialogue and repercussions were always my favorite though, like those that establish new waypoints or the quest with the Charr Cubs. As for the personal story, some parts were interesting and others not. Best part was easily the quest involving my father though. That was pretty cool.

Anyway, did anyone make the final event with the Monty Python rabbits? I checked out early and missed it, and wanted to hear reports.

So who's been tagging in for the last couple beta weekends? We're just a month out from the big release date, and I'm getting more excited by what I see all the time. In particular I love the new viewpoints that you get XP for checking out, mainly because they've scattered small jumping puzzles everywhere so you can get to these high points and scan the environment. I still haven't tried any of the major jumping puzzles yet, with the biggest one I've done being the one for an early skill point in the Sylvari starting area, but I'm really enthused by the concept.

I played during the last BWE. The new vistas are nice. Aside from feeling like the Eagle points in Assassin's Creed, I like how the game can show off the graphics AND give you EXP. Wish they gave a bit more EXP though; it's basically some more effort for as much EXP as finding a Point of Interest.

I liked how the Asuran town of Rata Sum was basically a cube. And along with the Grove, while pretty, I felt like I could die from accidentally falling off, because both places are so darn tall.

My main peeve with the game is my connection though. Half my time in the BWE was enjoying my melee elementalist(oh god, thank you for making close range eles possible, Anet). The other half? Wasting my time trying to connect to the game because of that stupid Code=7:11:3:189:101. Basically, I couldn't proceed past the character select screen(gets stuck at loading the zone), and when I did, I had 5 seconds of actual action until the game lags so hard it doesn't generate any characters or monsters, nor does it let me do anything except move around and eventually automatically boots me out of the game. I only had actual fun during the mornings of the BWE; any time after that was absolute futility. Doesn't help that I still haven't upgraded my PC for the thing.

That said, I can't wait to get the game.

I think they purposely limited server space to fill up and stress test everything, so if it worked for you in the morning lulls then hopefully you'll be fine on a normally populated server. Speaking of which, maybe those of us in the Guild should pick a server out ahead of time so we can all join the same one. It'll save us trouble if we want to group or PvP together later down the line. In particular, from what I've heard of their difficulty, the more people I know that I can do dungeon runs with - rather than grouping with strangers - the better.

As for the main game, what are you going to play at release? I've done Charr(Ash legion/traitor Father story) Thief and Sylvari(Green knight story) Warrior in the Beta Weekend events, but I've had my eye on an Asura character since the beginning. I keep waffling on my class, although I am leaning towards trying Engineer at this point. Engineer or Guardian.

I did notice that the servers were full when I couldn't connect, so I thought it was that. When they added more servers, I was able to play for a long while until 4 pm, then it started happening again, even when all the servers weren't full.

I'm sticking to Anvil Rock, since I doubt they'll be making servers for Asia and because I have a friend who said he'll be in Anvil Rock.

I'm planning on running a Thief, Elementalist, Mesmer and maybe a Warrior when the game comes out. Likely, all will be humans. I ran a Thief(commoner, lost parents), Elementalist(noble, lost sister) and Engineer(commoner, lost parents) but the I couldn't complete the storylines due to the aforementioned problems and because I couldn't level fast enough. And well, I didn't like how the Engineer played. Probably going to make my Thief, Elementalist and Mesmer run through each of the available human storylines. Then when I'm bored, make a Charr or something.

Heh, I doubt I'll be bouncing around with so many characters, so I'll probably stick to just my Asura Engineer and maybe an alt Human Guardian. I want to get far with them before looking elsewhere. I'll keep that server in mind though.
