2K Games Announces XCOM® - Suspense and Mystery-Filled First-Person Shooter from Creators of BioShock® 2
Award-winning developers set their sights on re-imagining the suspense, tension and fear of one of gaming’s most beloved franchises only on Xbox 360 and Windows PC

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--2K Games announced today that XCOM®, the re-imagining of one of gaming’s most storied and beloved franchises, is currently in development at 2K Marin, the studio behind the multi-million unit selling BioShock® 2. Currently in development exclusively for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC, XCOM combines the strategic core of the groundbreaking franchise with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience.

“With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise”
.“With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride.”

XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

XCOM is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information on XCOM please visit www.XCOM.com.

2K Games is a division of 2K, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO).

...Well, I certainly didn't see that coming.

Maybe if we throw a few Flame Darts at Activision Blizzard they'll remake Quest for Glory.

2K Marin does not instill confidence. BS2 had fun gameplay and that was it. Gameplay was the last thing that made me like the first game. It was everything else in the game that made it win those awards. With Levine moving on I guess that's expected.

I guess this new X-COM has potential to be good. Just not awesome. We'll see.

Because it's called XCOM.

It's still a game about an organization dealing with UFO invasion. Apocalypse, Interceptor, and (god help us) Enforcer were all very different entries under the X-Com name.

I'm more willing to give the game a chance, as a huge fan of X-Com, than to naysay, condemn, and refuse to buy it and therefore remove any chance of getting a sequel or spinoff done in the classic style. If we do show them that there's no support for XCOM financially, they'll abandon the game and we really wont see anything come of it.

Bump I guess?

I tried the EU demo and I found it rather fun; I might try out more of this franchise some time.

As a heads up for those who have it, this game is now free on Playstation Plus.

Now excuse me while I figure out ways to make space on my already overburdened harddrive.

The shooter or Enemy Unknown? I thought the shooter wasn't out yet and got re-branded to a third person action/strategy game featuring the 1950s.

Oh, is this topic specifically for the 1950s one? If so, I should have been more specific.

"Enemy Unknown" is the one that's currently for free on PS Plus.

You are deleting old installs, right?

Like with comps it's advised to usually have at least 50-75% of your HDD always free. Less strain on it.

I actually have not. So basically, delete the installs on the games I don't play anymore?

Pretty much.

If they're games you don't play anymore or gamefly rentals, they're just cluttering up the hard drive and taking space. Same with any large patches for those games. Save data is located under a different folder so you don't have to worry about accidentally deleting that.

Eeh, either one works. I mean, it's not like there's a glut of X-Com games. XD

EDIT

50-75% free on my PC?

Well, I'd have to do a lot of cleaning up...

Expansion for X-Com: Enemy Unknown, called "XCOM: Enemy Within."

Apparently, we're getting new things like...

-New maps
-New enemies
-gene modifications
-and rocket-punching MECHS

And more.

So yeah, I'll be breaking out the old X-Com when this hits in November for another run, because DAMN.

Bureau is quite fun so far, but I'm honestly quite torn on the mechanics.

Headshots = lol when the enemy is behind cover kinda defeats the purpose of it being an FPS... but then if headshots killed instantly it would defeat the purpose of XCOM altogether... but then you get these retarded boss fights where millions of trash spawn along with a giant mech that can walk over the fucking walls to get at you, and even in battle focus mode, time is progressing so you can't really wait more than a few seconds or your squadmates will die. So during boss fights, it just becomes a non-cover FPS where I tell my squad to run to one side and hide behind a wall while I run around killing everything and kiting the boss.

I just really wish headshots kill instantly outside cover even when not using a sniper rifle. Even with the headshot backpack, it still takes 3~4 HS to kill an outsider with the M4, and way more to kill a shield comm. That and if you're going to make the sniper rifle unable to instantly kill with headshots even on an unshielded comm, make the interval between shots bearable (it's fucking atrocious atm).

Aaaand downside to the new upcoming XCOM: Enemy Within.

-$30 for Mac/PC, it's an expansion.
-$40 for consoles. It's a "Game of the Year" Release, with new on-disc content. No DLC option.

Mrgh. I WANT this so bad, but the fact that it's being Capcom'd irks.

EDIT

On the plus side, I've seen more details that make me want this all the more:

Soldiers have two ways to be enhanced, like Psionics but without the aptitude test: MECH enhancements or Gene mods. And sadly, they're exclusive.

MECH Troopers are literally turning your guys into Robocop, slapping new arms and legs on them. They can't use traditional weapons, like the Sniper Rifles and so on... but they get their own weapons, like the mechs you can already build. Miniguns, railguns, energy weapons... and flamethrowers. They, sadly, don't get to keep the skills they have already (seriously, that would break the game if you slapped a Scout 'into' mech armor)... but they get new ones. Like targeting scenery to flush people out, emitting healing rays for everyone on your side, serving as mobile cover and getting jumpjets. I want at least one on my team, but throwing an entire squad of these guys at the enemy will be awesome.

Gene mods are really cool-sounding. There's mods to either harm psychic enemies attacking, or prevent them from controlling/panicking your men. You can also have them scaling walls like Spidey, thanks to a leg enhancement, or running around and regenerating health when hurt... but only one mod per 'slot,' sadly. Still sweet.

Already existing Squad abilities are being re-jiggered. Things like... "Up Close and Personal" is no longer a reflexive "enemy moving to me in 4 spaces or less, shoot at him," but a "I'm within 4 spaces, shoot at him." This means a lot more extra shots, and this is awesome. I like this, and it's a cool idea to re-jigger the abilities to even them out and make them more awesome.

Oh, and new enemy types - for the main missions and final mission. Like the Mechtoids. Mecha-Sectoids.

And then there are new Second Wave modifiers for the game, like one that randomizes the upgrade trees for soldiers beyond their initial class-specific ability. Which is insane, if you think about it.
