Well, I finally just saw it. I'm sort of an old fan of Trek, my parents had the movies of the original cast around so I grew up on Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, Voyage Home and Undiscovered Country so while I was interested in this new one I just never got around to seeing it in theaters so here's my very delayed thoughts.

It was okay.

I mean, it was pretty visually fantastic, that much is for sure. But there were times I missed the 3d scaled models from the original movies for that sense of... physical presence they had. Sometimes stuff just looks TOO pretty and you lose that sense of realism or weight. And for a Star Trek movie there wasn't a whole lot of focus on the Enterprise itself, which kinda made it feel like less of a character and more a prop, but that's probably personal nitpicking.

Characters, I liked some things, disliked others, and confused by others. Guy who plays Spock just does not have the voice for it, but his acting wasn't bad. Kirk's actor was pretty good, I could see him growing into the role of Kirk. Uhura was, I'll admit, an improvement and everyone else from Chekov to Scotty was good. Sulu's replacement was okay, lacking the voice of George Takei is difficult to deal with but he was otherwise pretty fun. I can't really FAULT these guys.

Musically, I heard Godzilla everywhere. I understand the need to differentiate and establish a new canon here, but a little more familiar music would probably have made some of us old-school guys feel at home. Still, the times the old music did appear was nice.

Storyline wise, I didn't mind some aspects of it. I mean, time-travel IS very Trekkie, and seeing Leonard Nimoy onscreen in pointy ears was good. But wow did it feel... disjointed. One moment he's being born, then he's a kid, then he's a jerk, then he's in the academy, then he's on the Enterprise-- c'mon! And after a certain point the storyline just seemed to exist to be a humongous dickass to everyone. What happened to the concept of the "I don't believe in the no-win scenario" just seemed to go out the window when Vulcan like... imploded. It could have been better, and more than anything else this is the weakest aspect of the film and seems to be something of a JJ Abrams phenomenom. He can assemble a visually fantastic movie with decent characters but he can't seem to string the scenes and story together in a way to keep you really satisfied, at least that's my experience as of Cloverfield and Star Trek.

Anyways, it's my hope that the next movie doesn't include time-travel hijinks or planetary destruction and has a stronger, but smaller scale, conflict to engage us with emotionally and visually.

Well, from what I've heard they want the next movie to have a situation that has to be overcome in lieu of an actual villain (a la ST IV), since they want the character focus to be on the crew growing together as a unit.
