Started watching this mostly because of my fiancee, but I've ended up actually enjoying it a lot. Whereas last season's Toradora managed to be one of the first romantic comedies in a while to actually be romantic, Nyan Koi decides to go the other route: namely, being a romantic comedy that's actually funny. Considering the now-painfully predictable slew of jokes and situations that most animes like this typically thrive on, it's a nice change of pace. Plot is simple enough: Main character is allergic to cats, yet his family loves them. So naturally, he's not happy. Problem is, the girl he's in love with also likes cats, which just means he's doomed. One day he accidentally knocks the head off of a cat god statue, and ends up cursed with the "gift" to be able to understand the thoughts of cats. He then learns that he has to do 100 good deeds for cats, or else end up turning into a cat himself and perish as a result of his own allergy to himself. His first task ends up coming from a pair of traumatized stray kittens, who have been attacked by a phantom abuser who in short order gets ahold of their grandfather. But since this is supposed to be FUNNY...well, let's just say things are QUITE as bleak as they sound. The show reminds me a lot of something like Sgt. Frog or Hayate the Combat Butler, except rather than use a constant string of references to other anime, it keeps the over-the-top manner of the jokes and applies them to relatively common-place situations, turning something mundane into something hilarious simply by the manner in which it's presented. I'd definitely encourage you guys to give it a look if you haven't already. |

If you like actual ROMANCE, Toradora is one of the best ones to come along since His & Her Circumstances. |

Isn't that usually how it goes in most any romcom? The girl the guy crushes on is NEVER as interesting. |

Yeah, the girl in ep 2 turned out to be pretty fun. The current love interest is kinda boring, though. |
