In case the title wasn't tip enough, I saw Inglorious Basterds (not a typo) this weekend. I have to say Tarantino more than made up for the embarrassment that was Death Proof. Brad Pitt and Eli Roth deserve no shortage of praise for their over-the-top displays as the members of a more-than-slightly unhinged American guerilla unit in Nazi-occupied France. However, surprisingly likable villain Hans Landa (Austria's Christoph Waltz) who really stole the show. He was like an evil Sherlock Holmes. Basterds caters to the violence-loving crowd in spades, although it manages to be incredibly engaging even when people aren't being shot to pieces. The dialogue is fantastic, particularly when Landa circles around someone like a hawk. The movie also wound up being surprisingly clever for what I assumed would be a hyper-violent parody of WW II movies. It kept me guessing to the end and put for some fairly interesting ideas about the nature of warfare and infamy. I won't call the movie genius, but it works on multiple fronts. tl;dr Go see Inglorious Basterds. |
