Pretty much my thoughts when I tried it, S3. I quit after the prologue ended, and I can't understand why the game was so damn popular.

Oh, god, the Prologue Chapter was horribly placed to boot.

"Hey, here's the opening to our game, which is great, but now we're sending you back a good unexplained-period-of-time to the past, and expecting you to fully remember exactly what was going on when you get back to this point thirty hours later."
It works for novels and games where the prologue doesn't take you forever or gives you a brief refresher course, but fuck. It pretty ripped away what little remained of me being involved in the story.

Further, is it sad that I guessed pretty much all of the plot twists so far, and I'm only in chapter 2?

I seem to be having a problemP. I was playing AP, and more than once while in the middle of gameplay, it's goes to the screen that asks you if you want to exit the game. But I never once actually pressed the Home button.

Anyone else ever have this issue come up?

I had the same problem........no idea why though. Weird enough, the problem disappeared after awhile. XD

...and still, I'd rather have FF7 than MGS1 again.
Mostly so I can actually play the fucking game. <_<

I'm not 100% sure why we need the orginal one when the remake did it justice. I dunno I'm just happy to be getting more A1 titles from the PS1 era.

The same could be asked of why we needed a DS-remake for RE1 when the Gamecube version worked so well...

All great sauce companies made games for the PS1. A1, Franks, Lea and Perrins were all pioneers of the early days o the PS1. Sure they were all steak based games, but classics none the less.

BUMP

'Cause I just got one.

I tried searching for a new 2000 for a few days but those are a bitch to find new unless you want to pay $200 for the special packs. I wasn't going to get a used one for $119-149 that was all scratched to hell either. So I broke down and bought a Core 3000 at FYE because there was a $30 rebate attached to it. I'm not happy about no CFW but I'm happy I finally got a PSP.

Time to mess around with it.

Crisis Core

Megaman Powered UP/Rockman Rockman
Irregular Hunter X/MMMHX
Metal Gear Solid portable OPs
Super Robot Wars AP
Grand theft Auto Vice/Liberty city stories.

The Rockman DASH collection if you can at least read Katakana.

Zechs' list is a good one. I feel I must add...

1) Final Fantasy Tactics.
I got bored of it months ago, but if you can wade through slowdown of an unforgivable degree during even the most minor combat actions, you'll enjoy the story. Maybe. I was bored by it. But still, it's better than most RPG stories. And the cinematic were awesome, all things considered.

2) Gundam vs Gundam.
This one should be obvious. The replay value isn't as great as Federation vs ZAFT on the PSP, but it's a lot more fun to play. Also of interest are the Gundam Battle games, which take the traditional gameplay of the vs games and then toss it out the window. Think of it as the Sengoku Basara of Gundam, with things like Guncannons being able to fist-of-the-north-star their enemies away.

3) Breath of Fire 3.
Released only in Japan and Europe, try to find the European version. It's harder to find, but it's in full English. And it's the same game it was on the PS1, with almost no slowdown... unlike a certain Final Fantasy game I could mention. I wound up getting the game a while ago, but no longer have it in my posession... as a certain asshole has yet to return it to me from 'borrowing it' over a year ago. Fucker.

And, if you don't mind grabbing old PS1 games again, there are some good ones for download out there. FF7 is 10 bucks, so it's worth the price if your PSP card is large enough. Also, Castlevania: SotN is there for another 10... and probably has the original awesome!translation unlike in the PSP Dracula Hunter X game (which I don't recommend, as the game requires you to leap through hoops to get SotN and Rondo of Blood, as well as horrendously stilted gameplay for a 'new' game).

As for games to avoid...
1) Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops/+.
The game is, long story short, broken as fuck. Stealth isn't an option, any unnamed soldiers are shit and can't go undercover like you'd hope, the plot is also pretty shitty and does nothing but raise more questions about how insane Kojima must be for writing it... oh, and it wasn't even originally meant to be a Metal Gear game. But then was made into one, and was entirely based off selling on the online part of the game rather than the single player - much like Halo 2.
And Portable Ops + is an expansion pack sold as a full game for the online part of the game. And with those online servers gone and dedicated to MGS4, there is no point to buying it.
...actually, avoid most every single 'third person action game' on the PSP. Star Wars: Battlefront II/Renegade Squadron and the like may look fun, but without that second control stick, they turn into slow pieces of shit that barely resemble their original games. The only two franchises to dodge this problem are the Warriors games from Koei (and, by proxy, the Sengoku Basara franchise) and the Monster Hunter games. It's odd, but they work well enough in the format to make even Konami's efforts on the console look utterly shitty by comparison.

2) Most of the PS1-emulated games on the Playstation store. They may have sold a lot, but very few of them have aged well - especially Crash Bandicoot ($6, bought it on a whim), which has the most archaic saving system I've seen in decades. Even password-based games like Metroid have better saving systems than this game.

3) Final Fantasy 1/2
Because you've played them before, they're not worth paying for separately ($30 individually? The hell?) and the updated graphics make the game look incredibly cheap. Oh, and because you've played them before. And even if you've not played them before, every other FF game does the same stuff better than they do. Especially as neither of the games have added anything worth making them special now.
Unless you count FF2's fubar experience system.

Really, that's about it for advice from me. Zechs covered most of the good games.

I like Portable Ops myself. Phantasy Star Portable is also a lot of time wasting fun.

R-Type Command is awesome, somewhat slow, but awesome.

SRWAP is quite groovy.

I'm also fond of AC!D 2.

Oh, right, the Metal Gear Ac!d games are honestly pretty awesome.
MGA1 has more than a few flaws, such as the gameplay not fully being explained to you before it's kinda necessary - as well as the gameplay being a little slow... but it's actually fun. As strange as 'Card-based Metal Gear' sounds, it works incredibly well. MGA2, though, takes the concept and runs with it like Astray R ran with Astray - and makes it incredibly awesome.

Really, the Ac!d series is like the Turn-A Gundam of Metal Gear.

I'm thinking of:
Crisis Core
One of the Megaman games (I can read Katakana a little bit but I'm out of practice)
One of the Gundam Battle games
SRW: AP
Maybe one of the latest Bleach, Naruto, or DBZ fighters
Dissidia

Definitely getting:
Gundam VS Gundam (Main reason I bought a PSP)

I'd wait on Dissidia for the US release. Supposedly some balance changes and stuff, and the PSP is region free so it doesn't hugely matter.

Seconding Atom's proposal to wait. Bug fixes are common during the translation interim between Japanese and US/EUR releases from Squeenix. Which then allows them to bring the US/EUR version back over to Japan, where they charge more money for it.

As for Megaman, I've enjoyed both the US-released games (Maverick Hunter X and Powered Up), but found more joy out of Powered Up in general. Maverick Hunter X is pretty basic in the re-imagining, but at least they let you play as Vava/Vile in an incredibly awesome (and incredibly hard) mode.
Meanwhile, Powered Up lets you not only play as Mega Man, but also as every single one of the Robot Masters. This includes Cut Man. Further, if you have access to the wireless interwebs, you can 'download' two bonus characters for free: Roll and Protoman.
...ok, so they're already in the damned disc and it's just a key to unlock them, but it's free anyhow. Also, Roll has about 8 alternate costumes. Most play exactly the same (base Roll hits things with a broom, G&G Roll whacks things with a lance, ect...), but a few have alternate effects with the weaponry. Also, Protoman is a beast with his Proto Buster.
Also, the ability to build your own levels, as well as download them from the online setup is great. Especially those insane levels made by Capcom themselves. My only wish for Powered Up is that we could somehow have gotten Viewtiful Joe involved in this as well. That would have been fucking awesome.

But yeah, Powered Up is probably the better of the two: multiple difficulty levels, 11 playable characters (each literally playing differently with different strengths and weaknesses - Fireman is broken on so many levels), challenge levels for each character and near-infinite replayability thanks to the online stuff? Hell. Yes.

As for Gundam Battle, if you can read Japanese in some form, just go for the newest one of the batch: Battle Universe. If not, Battle Royale is a fantastic place to start: 75% of the game is in English. That remaining percent is the dialogue and a few minor mission objectives, sadly, but it's straightforward. Later games vastly improve the engine, so use Royale as a springboard to get into the newer games by getting familiar with the settings and menus.
Sorta like using SRW 3 or the US releases of SRW OG to get used to the Japanese SRW system.

Also, if you're bored and into the Sonic franchise, Sonic Rivals isn't a bad bet. The story is... meh for a Sonic game, but it's a pretty damned good Sonic game that's based in 2D running and platforming - and in this case, racing against an opponent as well. It's not a fantastic-must-buy game, but it's still pretty fun.
Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow and Whitey Silver all play similarly, but have special abilities and move just differently enough to be different characters - and Hidden Character Metal Sonic is a pretty neat bonus.
If you can get it cheap and like old 2D Sonic gameplay, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up. It's no Sonic Advance/Rush, but it's far better than Sonic Heroes or Shadow.

Finally, two remaining games of note:
1) Sengoku Basara Heroes. Think Samurai Warriors being told with the Gundam vs engine. With the characters and weapons cranked up to 11. It's all in Japanese, sadly, but it's pretty simple to figure out... and it's actually pretty fun. The auto-lock-on actually more than makes up for the lack of a second control stick and helps make the game feel like a different beast from the main games... while still keeping the insane action.
2) Warriors Orochi. While SBH does it better, Warriors Orochi is worth the mention for actually being on-par with the console counterpart game in all respects outside a lack of most voice acting (sacrifices had to come from somewhere, sadly). If you have it on any console, ignore the game... but if you don't and want to mindlessly slaughter things with some epic badasses, consider it. It is a Warriors game, so repetitive is the name of the game... but it's still damned fun.

Thanks guys. The info/recommendations more than makes up for the spoilers in the Eva thread :P

Just picked up Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower tonight and getting Crisis Core tomorrow.

Dissidia is getting a US release? I didn't know that. Then again I never payed attention to PSP games until now.

Powered Up sounds good, I'll have to pick that up.

Battle Royale will be the first of the Battle games I pick up then.

Thanks for the detailed run downs S3

Not liking the controls of Darkstalkers on the PSP. I can't get my hands in a good position at all. If I could play it on a 360 controller or a PS2/3 controller I'd be all set. Oh well.
