"Yeah, for that matter, how old are you huh?" Nicus suddenly asked the Viera. |

Derry leaned his head back against the cart in thought. "Into my sixties now," he replied. |

"Oh no not at all Mr. Nicus," Sendis said reassuringly as she put both hands up, and open to demonstrate her sincerity. "I can see how it can happen, years on the road with only one companion. And...60 years?" She said to Nicus and then turning to Derry. "You certainly don't look it." |

"There's nothing wrong with 60," Derry protested, "We Viera age much differently than humans. I'm more like... in a human's 20's, still well within my prime." |

"Oh, I see," she said nodding and making a mental note of that fact. "Then technically we're of the same age then." |

"Well, if your family is anything like you," Lufia said with an encouraging tone, "Or what my first impression of you is, I think they should be fine. Have you ever thought of going back and visiting them?" |

"Can't say that's ever really crossed my mind. I guess I might go back someday... but I don't really got a reason. I left without much words, and I doubt there'd be much fuss over me coming back. I left to become as good a blacksmith I could, and I think there's so much more I need to learn, I know there's so much more I can be," Nicus clenched his fist. "If I ever go back, it'll be as the greatest blacksmith I can possibly be at that time. I will have learned all I can and I'll go back and open shop there... and refine my techniques with practice. And then, maybe, someone later will seek me out to learn from me later." Nicus grinned, "Yeah, that sounds like a plan. Hey Jameson, when I get to be the best Smith I can be, we're gonna go back to my home." Jameson managed a smile (somehow) and replied with a simple, "Wark." "Yeah, I think it'll be nice too." |

Kupek had stayed to the back of the cart as it began to move again, plodding along in his mekka and listening to the others -mostly Kupornicus- speak. He was awed by the older moogle, and intrigued as well. The older fellow's determination matched that of his own, and he reminded Kupek of his father. Was he seeing a preview of his future self as well? He desperately wanted to ask the old Mog about something in particular he had noticed, but he wanted to ask Nicus about it face to face- it was the only respectful thing to do with a Mog elder. Winding a small crank at his side until it reached the right pressure, Kupek rotated it's handle before locking it into position. Once in place, the crank began to uncoil, and it allowed the mekka to walk on it's own. No longer constrained to his foot pedals for movement, Kupek opened up the head of the mekka and stood up. With his body from the waist up now visible, he adjusted his spectacles and tried to speak clearly. "Mr. Kupornicus- can I ask you a question, kupo?" |

Kupek blushed and bowed quickly, his pom-pom bobbling forward from the speed of his movement. "Yes sir, Nicus kupo!" He stood straight again and squared his shoulders. "I've never seen a Mog handle language so skillfully, kupo! You speak perfect human and can even understand chocobo! Was it hard?" Kupek was finding it difficult to keep the awe off his face. He looked to Jameson, almost as if she could provide an explanation, too. "Also..." he looked down for a second, "have you ever heard of a Mog named Kuten? He was..." the young moogle slightly hesitated. He had wanted to say 'my Dad', but he felt a flash of guilt over dropping that particular tidbit, almost as though he was trying to receive preferential treatment. "...a famous Mog Engineer who travelled around like you, kupo." |

"... and relax too." Nicus caught on quick to the kid's worship. It was actually... kind of nice. "I'm just older and more traveled than you, I've been speaking the words of men and other races for many years... perhaps more years than you've even been alive young Mog. Jameson and I... it's a special relationship, she's the only Chocobo I understand, and I don't care to question why too much." The young Moogle's next question confused Nicus a bit. "Kuten? Who?" Were his initial thoughts so he racked his brain quickly to try and recall any Moogle he'd heard or met named Kuten. There seemed to be a tingle of recognition for the name, somewhere or something, some piece of mechanical engineering he might have admired for a moment and inquired about its creator, or something, but he had certainly not met or heard of this Kuten that he could recall. Not surprising, he was poor with names in the long-term, and for the short-term too. Still, he could see the name was important to the young Mog, so he hesitated to dismiss the name out of hand. "I seem to recall hearing the name... a long time ago..." Nicus began, "I cannot say I recall ever meeting him personally, or personally encountering his efforts, but I have traveled the lands for long and have forgotten the names and places of many things I found admirable... all for sake of my craft." Nicus flexed his hand. "If you are looking for a piece of wisdom, Little Mog, just recall that memories are like food. When you eat, when you experience, the flavor and feeling seem like they will stay with you forever. But it isn't long before the flavor fades, and all you have is longing and memories." Nicus smiled, a few tears in his eyes. Jameson watched him closely. "If you want to travel and see the world, be good with words and pictures, draw what you see, write what you feel. And if you have people you love and care for, see them. I don't regret the path I've taken, but take the steps to make sure you not regret yours." Nicus stretched. "So this Kuten... he was your father, aye? And he built that piece of machinery you sit in? Why not you tell me about him a bit, and in return, mayhap I'll examine yon armor and see what I can do about some of the wear and tear in the plate?" |

Zereal finished his sip of wine and looked at the bottle disdainfully. "Bah, cheap stuff," he muttered as he read the label. "Suppose I shouldn't expect the high-quality stuff from a random inn." He slipped the cork back into the bottle and continued walking. |

"By the way," Dani said, looking up from the book at the knight walking beside the cart, "Did you ever figure out your name? I understand if it's muddled, but thinking of you as one letter is bringing back a bad memory... and it's awkward, too." |

"Well, the smell, yeah," Dani answered. "I Wouldn't know about the spell... We thankfully managed to escape without him casting at us. The way he was, I wouldn't be surprised, though. Right out of a really sick joke book." |

Loosening up, Kupek listened carefully as the older moogle dropped pearls of wisdom. Make a record of my travels... There was something that bothered the old man enough to make him emotional, and Kupek's expression became one of concern- he would have to ask him about it in private. Surely the old Mog didn't want to say anything about it in front of the others. "So this Kuten... he was your father, aye? And he built that piece of machinery you sit in? Why not you tell me about him a bit, and in return, mayhap I'll examine yon armor and see what I can do about some of the wear and tear in the plate?" "I'd be honored, Kupo!" He bounced in place. "You're right- Kuten was my pop. He built this Mekka to help him work in the human world without wearing down his wings." The young moogle flapped his left wing in demonstration. "You know how tiring it can be to fly for a long time, after all." He continued, his eyes gleaming. "He was friends with many of the top chemists and engineers from all around Zamas you see, and while carrying out jobs for people he saw amazing things- and fought Bomb monsters with these same hands, kupo!" Kupek pointed down to the hands of the mekka itself, still plodding along. "He's a brilliant Mog with a genius mind for machinery, and very brave, too. I'm gonna be just like'em!" |
